BRAKE/ ((D) Brake system
This warning/indicator Light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the - (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) symbo l flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction
in the brake system . In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the dis­
play:
Stop veh icle and chec k bra ke fl uid le vel
Stab ilization pr ogram and AB S fau lt! See

"' Pull off the road and stop the veh icle .

Parking brak e set
The parking brake wa rning light _ /_
(Canada models) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set. In addition, a wa rning tone
will sound after you have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h) .
Par king brak e set
The ~ warning/ind icator light i lluminates
when the parking brake is set¢,& .

-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 174, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the engine hood and check­
ing the brake fluid.
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
ha zard! Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If both, the~ warning
light and the
l;S warning light come
on at the same t ime, the rear wheels
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle cont rol and an acci­
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i- ately by your a
uthorized Audi dealer or a
qualif ied workshop. Drive s low ly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application .
-Canada models: If both, the brake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warn ing light
liJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing . Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of veh icle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repai red im­
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer
or a qualified wo rkshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- If the b rake wa rning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the flu id leve l in
the brake flu id reservo ir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
p ressu re on the b rake pedal to stop you r
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping powe r
in critical situations . You must allow for
increased braking distances . The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident .
t!i1 !.!r Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in­
dicator light mon itors the safety systems e .g .
(airbags , pretens ioners) and illuminates fo r a
few seconds each time you switch the ign it ion
on.
If the
I (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink , then there is a malfunction somewhe re
in the system. If the ligh t does not i llum inate
when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a malfunc tion .

~ Contact your authorized Audi dea ler for as -
sistance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is co rrect, then the
radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion.
If the generator wa rning/ind icator light
should also illuminate

fan belt may be damaged.
A WARNING
- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle
is a da ngerous a rea. Before you perfo rm
any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow­
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow­
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in­
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on ­
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor ­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

Unlike the sing le-trip memory, the total-trip

A WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your veh icle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry grass, sp illed fuel or
any other flammable mater ials .
- Never allow anyone - especially small
children -to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. Locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
- Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle. Children could re lease the park­
ing brake o r move the gea rshift lever out
of gear. The vehicle could start to roll
away and cause an accident .
- No matter what the season is, the tem­
perature in a parked vehicle can reach
dangerous levels .
Starting on hills
Applies to vehicles: wi th hill hold assist
Hill ho ld assist makes it easier to start on
hills.
T he system is activated when the bra ke peda l
is depressed
for a few sec ond s.
After releasing the brake pedal, the brake
power is held for a
brief moment to p reven t
the vehi cle from rolling back when s tarti ng. At
th is time, you can easi ly beg in to move your
vehicle .
A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immediate ly
after releasing the brake pedal, under
certain circumstances, the vehicle would
begin to roll backward. Depress the
brake peda l immediately or engage the
hand brake.
- Should the engine stall, depress the
brake peda l immediately or engage the
hand brake .
- In order to prevent the vehicle from roll­ ing back unintentionally when starting in
stop-and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
i n g off.
@ Tips
You can find o ut if yo ur vehicle is equ ipped
with "Hill hold ass ist" at an authorized
Audi dealersh ip.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previous ly stored maximum
speed. A warning tone will so und as soon as
the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed by
about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbol appears in the display. .,,.

Damping can be adjusted to the driver's pref­
erence and it adapts automatically to the cur­
rent driving situation.

Aud i magnetic ride is an electron ically con­
trolled damp ing system . Th is chassis system
assists the driver by adapting to the par ticular
situatio n th rough imper cep tible con trol p roc­
esses. The
damping provides individual mod u­
l ation of damping forces. For example, with
dampi ng cha racterist ics set to p rovide greater
comfort, damping is set somewhat harder for
a brief period only as required, when rounding
a curve and when braking.
Standard setting
Select the standard sett ing if you prefer a sus­
pension setting emphasizing comfort.
Sport setting
Select the sport setti ng if you prefe r a sporty
suspe nsio n setting . The LED in the sw itch

comes on to indicate spo rt setting .
@ Tips
The w arning/indicator light 8 in the in stru ­
ment cluster comes on in the even t of a
malfunction . Drive to the closest au thor ­
ized Audi dealer as soon as possible and
have the malfunction repaired.
Sport mode

If there is a malfunct ion in the retracta ble
rear spoiler* or the Audi magnetic ride*, it
may not be poss ible to activate sport
mode.
Acoustic parking system
Rear acoustic park assist
Applies to vehicles: wit h 4-channel acoustic park assist
Acous tic park assist gives a warning about
obstacles behind the vehicle.
Description
T he rea r acousti c park ass ist (4-cha nnel
a coustic park ass ist) determines the distance
of the vehicle from an obstacle using ultra­
son ic sensors. The sensors are in the rear
bumper. The volume a nd the pitch of the

chimes can be adjusted through the menu dis­p lay ~
page 24 .

Bac king up
Distance warning when backing up starts
when an obstacle is detected in the range of
the park assist system . As the d istance de­
creases, the time interva l between the audib le
tones becomes sho rter.
When the d istance is less than 1 foot (0 .30
m), the tone becomes cont inuous . At this
point you should stop backing up.
Please note that low objects already signalled
by a warning can disappear from the system's
detection range and w ill not continue to be
signalled.
Potential malfunction s
If a warning buzzer sounds for a few seconds
when the ignition is sw itched on, there is a
system malfunction w ith the aco ustic park as­
sist . If the malfunction persists unti l the igni­
tion is sw itched off , there will be no acoustic
warn ing at the next attemp t to activate the
system . Have the problem corrected.
Th ere is no confirmation tone when reverse
gear is engaged if there is a system ma lfun c­
tion .
For the park ing ass ist to operate, the sensors
must be kept clean and free of ice .
.8, WARNING
- Senso rs have b lind spots in which obje cts
cannot be detec ted . Pay speci al atten tio n
to small c hildren and animals. They can-

not always be detected by the sensors -
danger of an accident!
- The parking assist cannot replace the
driver's attention. The driver alone is re­
sponsib le for parking and similar driving
maneuvers. Always watch where you are
driving .

tion range as they are approached and w ill
not continue to be signalled . Objects such
as ba rrie r cha ins, trailer d raw bars, th in
painted vertica l poles, o r fences may not

age.
