l ast time the memory was cleared appears in
the disp lay.

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The single-trip memory stores the trip infor­
mation from the time the ignition is turned on
until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was
turned off, the new data will be included in
the calculat ion of the current trip informa­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours
the memory is reset automatically.
Total-trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the single -trip memory, the total -trip
memory is not reset automat ical ly. This per­
mits you to evaluate your driv ing data for the
entire period between manua l resets.

Operation

The speed warning symbol. (USA models)/
• (Canada mode ls) in the warning 1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum
speed . It goes out when the speed falls below
the stored maximum speed.
The speed warning symbo l wi ll also go out if
the speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed
by more than about 2S mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds. The stored maximum speed
is deleted.

Speed warn ing 2
Storing warn ing 2 is recommended if you al­
ways
want to be reminded of a certa in speed,
for example when you a re traveling in a coun­
try that has a general maximum speed limit,
or if you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for winter tires.
The speed warning 2 symbol, . (USA mod­
els)/ . (Canada models) appears in the d is ­
p lay when you exceed the stored speed limit.
Unlike warning 1, it will not go out unti l the
vehicle speed drops below the stored speed
limit.

Even though your vehicle is equipped with
a speed warning system, you should sti ll
watch the speedometer to make sure you are not driving faster than the speed lim it.

-Daytime ru nning lights and automatic
headlights are only intended to assist
the driver. They do not relieve the driver
of his respons ib ility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually ac­
co rding to the current light and v is ibi lity
condit ions. For example, fog cannot be
dete cted by the light sensors*. So alw ays
switch on the headlights
io u nder these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark.
- Crashes can happen when yo u cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the headlights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see yo ur car from
the back.
- Please obey a ll laws when using the
lighting systems described here.
@ Tips
- With the switch in AUTO front fog lights
and rear fog lights cannot be turned on in addition.
- The light senso r for headlight contro l is
l ocated in the rear view m irror mount.
You should therefore not app ly any st ick­
ers to the windsh ield in this area in o rder
to preve nt ma lfunctions o r failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted

-When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sou nds as long as the driv­
er's door is open .
- In coo l o r damp weather, t he ins ide of
t h e headlights, turn signa ls and tail
li ghts can fog ove r du e to t he tempera­
tu re diffe re n ce between the inside and
outside. They will cle ar sho rtly after
swi tching them on. This does not affect
t h e service li fe of the lighting . -
In the event o f a light sensor malfunc­
tion, the driver is notified in the instru­
ment cl uster display

T he coming home f unction ill umi nates the
area o utside the vehicle when you tu rn the ig­
nition off and open t he driver's door. Depend­
ing on vehicle eq uipment, the f unction can be
switched on and off or the length of t ime the
lights remain on* can be adjusted .
The leaving home illum inates the area outside
the vehicle when you unlock the vehicle. This
funct ion can be switched on and off .
The Coming home and Leaving home func­
tions only operate when it is dark and the light switch is in the AUTO position.
Daytime running lights
USA models: The daytime r unning lights can
be turned on or off using th is function.
Canad a model s: Th e fu nction ca n no t be
tu rned off .
It is activated automati cally each
time the ignition is t urned on. This menu item
is shown "greyed out" .

Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that l ow-lying pa rts such as spoi lers and exhaust
system parts do not bo ttom out and get dam­
aged.
This is especially true fo r vehicles with low­
slung chassis (sports chassis)* and fully load­
ed ve hicles .

Your personal style of driving will determine
the economy of your vehicle, as well as ex­
haust and noise levels.
F ue l economy, envi ronmental impact, and
wear on you r engine, br akes and t ires large ly
depend on th ree factors:
- you r persona l dr iv ing sty le
- operating conditions
- technical lim itations
I f you anticipate what you need to do next and
d rive economically, you can easi ly cut your
fuel consumption by 10 -15 percent. This sec­
tion will give you some t ips on how you can
he lp the environment and your pocketbook .

The consumption estimates as published
by ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the road, wh ich will vary depe nding upon vehi­
cle load and speed, road and weather con­
ditions, tr ip length, etc.
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout
ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are ac­
celerating.
.,. Avo id u nnecessary accelerating and bra king.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are ac­ ce lerat ing . If you ant icipate what is going to
happen next, you will need to brake less and,
thus, acce le rate less. Let the vehicle coast
whenever possible - for examp le when you see
t h at the next t raff ic light is red.
Avoid full throttle
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and
improves your mileage.
.,. Try and keep well below your car 's maxi -
mum speed .
Acce lerat ing gently reduces fue l cons ump­
t ion, eng ine wear, and does not disturb the
environment.
Fuel consumpt ion, exhaust emissions and e n­
gine noise increase disproportionately at high
speeds. If you drive at approximately three
quarte rs of top speed, fuel consumption w ill
be reduced by one ha lf. Never drive faster
t h an the pos ted speed limit and weathe r con ­
di tions pe rm it.
Reducing unnecessary idling
E ven when your car is just idling it burns up
fuel.

ing the v ehicl e .
.,. Do not wa rm up t he veh icle by le tti ng the
eng ine run a t idle.
It makes sense to shut off the engine in traffic
jams, when wa it ing fo r tra ins to pass at rail­
road c rossings, o r at traffi c lights that have
l ong wai ts on red. T urning the eng ine
off f or
just 30 -40 seconds saves more f uel than is
burned start ing t he engine again .
