It is not possible to re-open the door for a
brief period direct ly after closing it. This al­
lows you to ensure that the doors are properly
l ocked.
It depends on the settings in the MMI wheth ­
er the entire vehicle is unlocked or one of the
doors
¢ page 33.

If your vehicle has been standing for an ex­
tended period, please note the fo llowing:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
unlock the veh icle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from draining and to preserve your vehicle's ability to start
for as long as possible, the energy man­
agement system gradually switches off unnecessary conven ience funct ions.

Operating locks with the key
In the event of a failure of the power locking
system, the driver's door can be locked and unlocked at the lock cylinder.

If you lock the vehicle using the power locking
switch, please note the following:
- You cannot open the doors or the luggage
compartment lid from the
outside (in­
creased secur ity, for example when you are
stopped at a red light) .
- The diodes in the power locking switches il­
lum inate when all the doors are closed and
locked . ..,.

-When the vehicle is locked, the luggage
compartment lid can be unlocked sepa­
rately by pressing the button
C:::$ on the
master key. When the luggage compart­
ment lid is closed again, it locks auto­
matically.
- If the veh icle battery charge drops be­
low a certa in level, you can still open or
close the luggage compartment lid man­
ually, however, you w ill need to apply
more force to close it.

Requirement: You must have the vehicle key
on you and you must be standing behind the
luggage compartment lid. The ignition must
be sw itched off . Make sure you have firm foot­
ing.

ognizes the movement, the luggage com­
partment lid will open.
The luggage compartment lid will only open if
you make the movement as described. This p reven ts the luggage compartment lid from
open ing due to s imilar movements s uch as
when yo u walk between the rear of the vehicle
and your garage door.
General information
I n some s ituations, the functionality of the
system is limited o r temporar ily unava ilable.
This is the case, for examp le, if:

-you park close to a hedge and the branches
move back and forth under the vehicle for a
long per iod of t ime.
- you clean your vehicle, for examp le with a
pressure washer or in a car wash.
- there is heavy rain.
- the bumper is ve ry dirty (for example, after
driving on sa lted roads) .
The function will be ava ilable aga in automat i­
ca lly for a sho rt time .

If the central locking system fails, the lug ­
gage compartment lid can be opened at the
lock cylinder.

Closing the windows
• Pull the switch to the first stop and hold it
until the window reaches the desired posi­
tion.
• Pull the switch briefly to the
second stop to

Child safety lock
When the safety button®¢ fig. 32 is press­
ed, the LED in the button lights up. The fol­
lowing features are switched off:
- The power windows in the rear doors,
- The buttons for the power sun shades* in
the side windows,
- The buttons for the power sun shade * in the
rear window,
- Front passenger power seat adj ustment*
button.
_& WARNING
- When you leave your vehicle - even if on­
ly briefly- always take the ignition key
with you. This applies particularly when
children remain in the veh icle. Otherw ise
the ch ildren could start the engine or op­
erate electrical equ ipment (e.g. power
w indows). The powe r windows are func­
tional until the driver's door or passeng­
er's door has been opened.
- Be careful when closing the windows.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- When locking the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle must be unoccupied sinc e the
windows can no Longer be opened in an
emergency.
Opening and closing
@ Tips
-The driver can Lower or raise the power
sun shades* in the side windows by using
switches © and @.
- After the ignition has been switched off,
the windows can still be opened or
closed for about 10 min utes. The power
windows are not switched off until the dr iver's door or passenger's door has
been ope ned.
What to do after a malfunct ion
The one-touch open and close function must
be reactivated if the battery hos been discon­
nected .
• Pull and hold the power window switch un­
til the w indow is fully closed.
• Release the sw itch and then pull it again for
at least one second.
Valet parking
The valet parking feature protects the lug­
gage comportment from unauthorized
ac ­
cess .

using fue l unnecessarily. So remove the
roof rack after using it.

Electrical accessories can be connected to ev­
ery 12-volt socket.

The 12 volt sockets can be used for electrical
accessories. The power input must not exceed
120 watts.

Before you purchase any accessories, always
read and follow the information in
~ page 298, Additional accessories and parts
replacement.
A WARNING
The sockets and the electrical accessories
connected to them operate only when the ignition is switched on. Incorrect usage
can lead to ser ious injuries or burns. To re­
duce the risk of injuries, never leave chil­
dren unattended in the vehicle with the ve­
hicle key.

To avoid damaging the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly.
- Never connect equipment that generates
electrical current, such as a solar pane l
or battery charger, to the 12 volt socket.
This could damage the vehicle's electri­
cal system .
- The 12 volt socket should only be used
for a short period of ti me as a power
source for electrical equ ipment . Please
use the electrical sockets in the vehicle
when connecting equipment for longer periods.

When the engine is off and accessories are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be drained.

76 Seats and storage
-the temperature in the luggage compart­
ment is below 131 °f (55 °C). The cooler
switches off automatically if the tempera­
ture in the luggage compartment exceeds 131 °f (55 °C). Once the tempera ture falls
below 131 °f (55 °C) again, the cooler
switches on aga in automatically .
- the battery is adequately charged . The cool­
er switches off automatically if the vehicle
battery voltage falls below a minimum lev­
el. This prevents the battery from discharg­
ing. The cooler switches back on again auto­
matically when the battery voltage increases
again (e.g . after starting the engine).
The cooler cools to 42.8 °f
(+ 6 °C) and the
freezer cools to 21.2 °f (-6 °C) in opt imum
cooling conditions . The cooling performance
is affected by the temperature in the luggage
compartment. The temperature inside the
cooler will be higher if the luggage compart­
ment is hot.
A WARNING
To avoid putting the occupants at any risk, please observe the following safety rules:
- The maximum capacity is 2.5 kg (5.5
lbs.).
- Never overload the cooler. This could
cause injury in the event of a collision or
sudden braking.
- The cooler lid must always be kept closed
while you are driving. Make sure the re­
taining catch is securely engaged. The contents of the coo ler could be thrown
forward into the passenger compart­
ment in the event of a collision or under
sudden braking -risk of injury!
- Inflammable liquids, gas canisters, etc.
must not be stored in the cooler -risk of
explosion! This also includes any prod­
ucts that might emit volatile or inflam­
mable gases.
- Liquids will freeze at temperatures at or
below 32 °f (0 °C) and may cause glass
bottles to burst!

- The ventilation openings for the cooler
are located on the back panel trim in the
luggage compartment and
must be kept
clear at all times.
- If the cooler is not functioning properly,
switch it off to prevent further damage.
Have it checked by a qualified workshop.

Switching the ignition on/off
• To switch the ignition on/off, press the
I START ENGINE STOPI button. Do not press
the brake pedal while doing this.
Starting the engine

If the engine does not start immediately, the
starting process is automatically stopped af­
ter a short time. Repeat starting procedure.
Start-Stop-System*:
When you stop and the Start -Stop -System*
turns off the engine, the ignition still remains
switched on.

ton now, the ignition will be switched off.

Switching the ignition/engine off
automatically*
The follow ing applies to vehicles with Start­
Stop-System*: to prevent the battery from

draining, the ignition and the engine will
switch off automatically under the following
cond itions:
- The vehicle has already been driven.
- The driver's door is opened.
- The driver's seat belt is removed .
- The brake pedal is not pressed down.
- The vehicle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
placed by the side marker lights. The side
marker lights will switch off after a certain pe­
riod of time or when you lock the vehicle .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in conf ined
spaces -danger of asphyx iation.
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running. If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serio us injuries.
(D Note
- Avo id h igh engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature - other­
w ise you risk engine damage.
- The engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle.
@ Tips
-After a co ld engine is started, there may
be a brief period of inc reased noise be­
cause oil pressure must first build up in
the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is nor­
ma l and not a cause for concern.
-If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition w ill switch off
after a certain period of time. Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will sw itch off as well
when that happens.

This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is switched on . Al­
ways sw itch
off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicle . See also

Shift to P and turn off ignition before leav­
ing car , otherwise vehicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is sw itched on and
the selector lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selector lever into the P position and
sw itch
off the ign ition when you ex it the vehi­
cle . Otherwise the vehicle could ro ll. See al so
¢page 83.
Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine un ­
der certain circumstances, for example if the
battery in the vehicle key is drained, if inter­
ference has affected the key or if there is a
system malfunction .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

• Pull on the switch C®l ¢ fig. 87 ® to apply
the parking brake. The indicator light in the
switch illuminates.
• Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator
pedal and press the switch ©lat the same
time to release the park ing brake. The indi­
cator light in the switch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­ chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the veh icle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake .
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting a ss ist helps you when
dr iving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake

-When starting on inclines, the starting as -
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional-
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
park ing brake is not re leased until sufficient

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain cond itions have been met . For exam­
p le, the engine will
not be switched off in the
following situations:
- The engine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start -Stop-mode .
- The interio r temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- Th e outside temperature is extremely h igh/
low.
- The windshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low .
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or there is a steer ing movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp inclines .

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example. The engine restarts
without any action by the driver.
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted

- The battery charge level becomes too low .
- High power consumpt ion.

If you shift into the D, Nor S positions af­
ter sh ifting into
reverse, the vehicle must
