- Always observe the warning in
¢ page 209, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself . Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .
(D Note
-Mounting additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the radiator . At h igh outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
properly distribute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engin e RPM
(r evolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM d rops be low 1,500 , you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod . Before reaching this a rea, move these­
lector lever to position D/S or ease your foot
off the accelerator pedal.

ing on the engine.

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors
certain individual functions and components
of the vehicle when the ignition is turned on
and when the vehicle is moving .
With the ignition turned on, you can start the "Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
! S ET !
button . You can perform an Auto-Check se­
quence when the vehicle is stationary and the
ignition is turned on or when the veh icle is
moving slower than 3 mph (5 km/h).
In addition, the number of keys init ialised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
three keys have been initialised. This feature
enables used car buyers to ma ke sure they
have received all of the keys.
If you are given only two keys, for instance,
you should take the vehicle and the existing
keys to an Audi dea ler to have the missing key

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and chec k coolant le vel
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes ­
sage appears, the coo lant temperature is too
high or the coo lant level is too low.
> Pu ll off the road.
> Stop the vehicle .
> Turn off the engine.
> Check coolant level ¢ page 223.
> Add coolant if necessary¢ page 224.
> Continue driving only after the eng ine cool­
ant warn ing/ indicator light goes out .
> Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
s istance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion .

If the indicator light turns on and the mes ­
sage appears in trailer mode*, let the engine
run at idle for a few m inutes to cool down.
A WARNING
- If your veh icle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key

You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

Homelink®
Universal remote
control
Description
Appl ies to vehicles: with Horne Link
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with the remote control for
devices that are already present.
With Home Link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
l ights, etc. comfortab ly from the inside of you
vehicle .
H ome Link makes it possible for you to rep lace
three differen t remote controls from dev ices
in your home with one universal remote. This
feature works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
dividual remote control for your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location.
A one-t ime programming of the sensor must
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems with Homelink. If the system does not
activate after performing the one-t ime pro­
gramming, check whether the system uses a rolling codec:>
page 122 for veh icles without
the MMI*.
_& WARNING
- Never use the Homelink ® transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea ­
ture as requ ired by federa l safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Us ing a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.

- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the
Homelink ® remote control is being pro­

7. Now activate (press) the hand transm it­

8. Pay attention to the turn sig nals for your
vehicle when activating the hand trans­
mitter .
If the emergency flashers blink
three times, the programm ing was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only
blinks one time, the 5 minute time lim it
for the adaptation has expired or the pro­
gramming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
or se lect another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices still
fail to be activated with the Homelink control buttons after programming is
completed, it is possible that these sys­
tems might be working with a roll ing code
instead of the normal fixed code . A

Program the remaining two buttons according
to the instructions ment ioned above . Begin
similarly with the 3rd step if the program­
ming connection was successful for the f irst
button .
Remote contro l units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signa ls after two seconds . This time
may not be sufficient for the Homelink sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency sign al. Per­
form all other steps as described above.

button again and hold it down .

the garage door opene r, a re eq uipped w ith
t he rol ling code.
.. Program the rolling code as follows:

and colo r of the bu tton may vary depending
on the garage door opener manufacturer .
.. Press the setting button on the garage door
opener motor unit ( usua lly this will activate
