- In order to make sure the locking func ­
tion is working, you should a lways keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is properly locked.
- Do not use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the eng ine or open a
door . In case this happens anyhow, push
t he unlock button@.
- Use the pan ic function only if you are in
an emergency s ituation.

-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off . Activate
the windshie ld w ipers after the ignit ion
i s sw itched back on by mov ing the w ind­

- Worn or dirty windshie ld wiper blades
result in streak ing. Th is can affect the
rain senso r* function . Check your wind­
s hi eld wiper blades regularly .
- The washer fluid nozzles of the wi nd­
s hi eld washer system are heated at low
temperatures when t he ig nit ion is on.
- When stopp ing temporarily, (e .g . at a
traff ic light) the s et speed of the w ind­

the selector lever securely into the P po­
sit ion and apply the parking brake firmly.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when

selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake

In this selector lever position the transmis­
s ion is mechanically locked. Engage P only

T o shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selecto r lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the

R- Reverse

lowest gear ratio when you shift into reverse.
Select R only when the vehicle is at a
full stop

In t he D/S position, the transmiss io n can be

the S sport mode . To select the S sport mode,

the selected driving mode. In the

o rmal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the best gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and the
dynamic contro l program (DRP).
Se lect the
s port m ode S for sporty driving.
T he vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power . Shift ing is more noticeable when accel­
erating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h), you must always app ly
the foot brake before and while moving the l ever to D/S out of N.
In certain circumstances it may be advanta ­
geous to temporari ly switch to the manua l
shift program to manua lly select gear ratios
to match specific driving conditions

-- Never select R or P whi le driving .
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is runn ing at idle . To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
m ust keep your foot on the brake in a ll

front airbags

Safety belts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper sea ted pos ition
so that airbags c an u nfo ld properly and pro­
vide supp lemental protection in a fronta l co l­
lision.
The front a irbags are designed to provide ad­
d itiona l protection for the chest and face of
the dr iver and the front seat passenge r when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been posit io ned so that the
occupant is p roperly seated as far as possi­
ble from the a irbag,
- and the head restraints have been properly
adjusted.
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye
with great force, things you have on your lap

or have p laced on the seat co uld become dan ­
gerous projectiles, and be p ushed into you if
the a irbag inf lates.
When an airbag deploys, fine dust is re leased.
T his is norma l and is not caused by a fi re in
the ve hicle . This dust is made up mostly of a
powder used to lubricate the airbags as they
deploy. It could irr itate skin .
It is important to remembe r that wh ile the
supplementa l airbag system is designed to re­
duce the like lihood of serious injur ies, other
injuries, for example swelling, bruis ing and
minor abrasions, can also happen when air­
bags inflate . A irbags do not protect the arms
o r the lower parts of the body. Front a irbags
on ly supp lement the three point safety belts
in some fronta l co llisions in which the vehicle
decelera tion is high e no ugh to deploy the air­
bags .
Front airbags will not deploy :
-if the ignition is sw itched off when a crash
occu rs,
- in side collisions,
- in rear-end collisions,
- in rollovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by
the airbag system is less than the minimum
threshold needed for a irbag deployment as
reg istered by the electronic control unit .
The front pa sse n ger ai rbag will also not
deplo y:
- when the front passenger seat is not occu­
pied,
- when the weight on the front passenger seat as sensed by the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem ind icates that the front airbag on the
passe nger side has to be turned off by the
electronic control unit (the

light comes on and stays on) .
A WARNING
Sitting in the wrong position can increase
the r is k of se rious inj ury in crashes.
- To reduce the risk of injury when the air ­
bags inflate, the drive r and passenge rs

at all times . Each time you turn on the igni­
tion, the airbag system indicato r light will
c o me on for a few seconds (self diagnostics).
T he s ide airbag sys tem supp lemen ts the safe­
ty belts and can help to reduce the risk of in ­
jury to the driver's and front passenger's up­ per torso on the side of the vehicle that is
struck in a side col lision. The airbag deploys
only in s ide impacts and only when the veh icle
acceleration registered by the control un it is
h igh enough .
If this rate is below the refer­
ence va lue programmed i nto the control u nit,
the side airbags will not be t riggered, even
though the car may be badly damaged as a re ­
sult of the collision . It is not possible to de­
fine an a irbag tr iggering range that will cover
every possible angle of impact, since the cir­
cumstances wi ll vary considerably between
one co llision and another. Important factors
include, for examp le, the nature (hard or soft)
of the impacting object, the ang le of impact,
ve hicle speed, etc. ¢

Aside from the ir normal safety function, safe­

- in side co llisions whe n the accele ration
meas ured by the sensor is too low,
- in rea r-end collisions,
- in rollovers.

hicle should only be washed in special
wash bays.
Washing your vehicle with a power
washer
Cleaning the ex terior of your car wi th a high­
pressure power washer is safe as long as you
observe a few simple rules .

produces a "fan shaped spray".

When cleaning the vehicle with a power wash­
er

This applies particularly to the
operati ng

and the s p ra yin g distance . Maintain
a sufficient d istance to soft mater ials such as
rubber hoses and sound/vibra tion deadening
materials (particularly on the underside of the
engine hood) . Do not use a jet wh ich sprays
water in a
direct stream or one that has a ro·
tat in g
jet.
Water temperature should not exceed 140 °F
(60 °() .
A WARNING
Never wash tires w it h a jet that sprays wa­
t er in a direc t stream. This cou ld cause in ­
visib le damage to t he tires and weake n
them, even if the spray is from a relatively
long distance and for a short time . Dam­
aged and weakened t ires can fai l and cause
accidents and persona l injury.

between the spray head and soft materia ls
like rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound­
deaden ing mater ia ls. Never aim the spray
head at the same point for a long time.
This also applies to cleaning headlights
and painted bumpers . Remember: the
closer the nozzle is to the surface of the
mater ia l, the greater the st ress on the ma­
terial.
Sensors and camera lenses
- Remove snow w ith a hand br ush and remove
ice with a de -icing sp ray that does not con­
tain so lvents.
- Clean the senso rs (adap tive c ruise co ntrol *,
parking system *) with a cleaning so lution
that does not contain so lvents and a soft
cloth.

washer,
- make sure there is enough distance to
sensors i n the rear bumper.
- do not clean the camera lenses and the
area a ro und them with the press ure
washer.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow o r ice from the camera lens . This
cou ld caus e the lens to crack .
- Never clean the camera lens with abra­
sive products .
Waxing and Polishing

A good wax coating protects the vehicle paint

You can use a liquid car wax to protect yo ur
paint as soon as one wee k afte r you r vehicle
has been delivered.
Even if you regularly use a
