Audi braking guard uses a radar sensor . It also
funct ions wit hin the lim its of the system
whe n adapt ive cruise control is switched off.
What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a veh icle ahead brakes s ud­
denly or if your own vehicle is traveling at a
high speed and approac hing a ve hicle up
ahead that is movi ng mo re sl ow ly. Audi brak­
ing guard does not react if it canno t detect
the si tua tion.
The system advis es yo u of various s ituations:
- The
distance wa rning is given if yo u are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If
the vehicle ahead bra kes sharply , yo u will
not be ab le to avoid a collision . The ind icator
light

- The
approach warning is given when a de­
tected vehicle up ahead i n your lane is mov­
ing m uch mo re sl owly than you are or if i t
brake s sh arp ly. W hen t his war ning is g iven,

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collis ion.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision .

- If the Audi braking guard senses that you
are not braking hard enough when a colli­
sion is imminent, it can increase the braking
force .
Which functions can be contr oll ed ?
You can sw itch Audi braking g uard and the
distance/approach warning on or off in the ra­
d io or MMI Qpage 104, Set tings in the ra­
dio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious persona l injuries.
The Audi b raking guard is an assist system
and cannot prevent a collis ion by itself.
The driver must always intervene. The dr iv­
er is always responsible for braking at the
correct time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the Audi braking guard is
switched on. Be ready to intervene and
be ready to take comp lete control when­
ever necessary. Always keep the safe and
legal distance between your vehicle and
vehicles up ahead .
- Audi braking guard works within limits
and w ill not respond outs ide the system
limits, for examp le when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar s ensor
for the A udi braking guard works only
within defined detect ion and range limits

that may prevent the proper detection of
other veh icles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .

- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .

- Keep in mind that brak ing guard can
brake unexpectedly. Always secure any
cargo or objects that you are transport­
ing to reduce the risk of damage or in­
jury .

road mode on (allroad), Audi braking
guard switches off automatically

-Switch Audi braking guard off when you
are loading the vehicle onto a vehicle car­
rier, train, ship or other type of transpor­
tation. This can prevent undesired warn­ ings from the braking guard system .
Messages
Applies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise co ntrol
Braking guard: Off
This driver message appears if the system is
turned off via the radio/MM I*. Otherwise, if
the system is turned off, the information ap­
pears every time shortly after the start of the
trip.
Braking guard: Activated
This driver message appears if sharp brake
pressure was applied due to an acute warning.

Three white dots appear if a setting cannot be
selected with the operating lever. For exam­
ple, this happens if you want to raise/lower
the speed even though there was no previous­
ly saved speed .
ACC: Deactivation
The driver message appears in vehicles with
manual transmission . If the clutch pedal was
pressed down for too long, the adaptive cruise
control turns off. A chime sounds as a remind­
er.
ACC: Sensor blocked
This message appears if the sensor view is ob­
structed, for example by leaves, snow, heavy
spray or dirt. Clean the sensor

ACC: not available
The driver message appears if there is a mal­
function. The adaptive cruise control turns off.
A chime sounds as a reminder. Have the sys- tern checked by an authorized Audi dealer or
authorized Audi Service
Facility.
ACC: unavailable
The driver message appears if, for example,
the brake temperature is too high . The adap­
tive cruise control is temporarily unavailable.
A chime sounds as a reminder.
Engine speed!
This driver message appears in vehicles with
manual transmission if the driver had not up­
shifted or downshifted in time while using
adaptive cruise control braking or accelerat­ ing, causing the vehicle to exceed or not reach
the permitted limit speed. The adaptive cruise
control turns off. A chime sounds as a remind­
er .
Shift lever position!
Vehicles with an automatic transmission: the
driver message appears if the selector lever is
shifted to the N position . The adaptive cruise
control is not available while in this position .
Vehicles with manual transmission: the driver message appears for vehicles with manual
transmission if there is no forward gear en­
gaged, meaning if the reverse gear or the 1st
gear is engaged or if the selector lever is in
the neutral position. The adaptive cruise con­
trol is not available while in this position.
Stabilization control (ESC)
This message appears if the electronic stabili­
zation control (ESC) is taking action to stabi­
lize the vehicle. The adaptive cruise control
turns off . A chime sounds as a reminder.
Speed too low
This message appears if the current speed is
too low
to set or to maintain the desired
speed .
The speed being saved must be at least
20 mph (30 km/h). The cruise control is
turned off for speeds lower than 12 mph
(20 km/h). The adaptive cruise control re­
mains turned on for speeds above 95 mph
(150 km/h) (override).

(D V ehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change
even if it is still
somewhat far away. The fas ter a vehicle ap­
p ro aches, the sooner the disp lay in the exteri­
or m irror will t urn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as cr it ical
for a lane change. All vehicles detec ted by
side assis t are in dicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.
@ Vehicles left behind
If you s low ly pass a ve hicl e tha t sid e ass ist has
dete cted ( the difference in s peed between the
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than 9 mph ( 15
km/ h), t he display in the exterior mirro r turns
on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind
spot.
The disp lay wi ll not t urn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that s ide assist has detected (t he d if ­
f erence in speed between the ve hicle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h).
Functional limitations
T he radar senso rs are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes whe n the road
l anes a re the normal width. In certain situa­
t ions, the d isp lay in the exterior mirror may
turn on
even though there is no ve hicle locat­
ed in the area that is cr itical fo r a la ne cha nge.
Fo r example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are driving on t he edge of your lane. If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another la ne that is
not adjacent to you r
cur rent lane .
- if you a re driving throug h a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane
ove r
from the ad jacent lane .
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or d isp laced gua rd rails) .
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist fu nctions are limited .
Do not
cover the radar sensors c::> fig. 110 with
stickers, depos its, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the funct ion. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trailer . For
i nforma tion on cleaning, refe r to
c::> page 201 .
&_ WARNING
-Always pay a ttention t o traffic and to th e
ar ea arou nd your vehi cle. Side a ssist c an­
no t repl ace a driver 's atte ntion. The driv ­
er a lone is always res ponsible fo r lane
cha nges a nd similar driving maneuvers.

-Improper reliance on the side assist sys­
tem can cause collisions and serious
personal injury:
- Never rely only on side assist when
changing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un­
der all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates
there are approaching vehicles, or
vehicles in your blind spot, only after
your vehicle has reached a driving speed
of at least 19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited.
For example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly. The display may
not turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as
heavy rain, snow or heavy mist .
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface .
Vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are outside
of the sensor range.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system .
Have your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
(D Tips
- If the window glass in the driver's door
or front passenger's door has been tint­
ed, the display in the exterior mirror may be misinterpreted.

Activating and deactivating

off . The LED in the button turns on when
side assist is switched on.
Adjusting the display brightness
Applies to vehicles: with side assist
The signal brightness can be set in the radio
orMMI* .
.,. Select: I CAR I function button > Audi side as­
sist.
.,. Select: I CAR ! function button > Car systems
control button > Driver assist > Audi side
assist .
The display brightness adjusts automatically
to the brightness of the surroundings, both in
the information and in the warning stage . In
very dark or very bright surroundings, the dis­ play is already set to the minimum or maxi­
mum level by the automatic adjustment. In
such cases, you may notice no change when
adjusting the brightness, or the change may
only be noticeable once the surroundings
change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the dis­
play in the information stage will not disrupt
your view forward. If you change the bright­
ness, the display in the exterior mirror will
briefly show the brightness level in the infor­
mation stage. The brightness of the warning
stage is linked to the brightness in the infor­
mation stage and is adjusted along with the
information stage adjustment.

If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary

Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunction (for example,
the battery charge level may be too low).
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will de­
tect vehicles correctly and it is switched off .
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty .
Have the system checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
soon .
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist switches off automatically when a
factory-installed trailer hitch is connected to
the electrical connector on the trailer . There is
no guarantee the system will switch off when
using a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use
side assist when towing a trailer.
