A child in a rearward-facing child safety

- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing

med iately install the rear-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating position and

A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will
increase the risk of inj ury in a c rash by in­
terfering with the way the airbag unfolds
or by being pushed into you as the a irbag
inf lates.
- Never hold things in your hands or on
yo ur lap when the vehicle is in use.
- Never transport i tems on or in the area
of the front passenge r seat . Objects
cou ld move into the area of the front air­
bags dur ing braking or other s udden ma­
neuver and become dangerous projec-

- Never p lace or attach accessories o r oth­
er objects (such as cupholders, tele­ phone brackets, large, heavy or bulky ob­

instrument panel, seat backrests o r be­
tween those areas and yo urself. These
objects could cause in ju ry in a crash, es­
peci ally when the airbags infl ate.
- Never re cline the front passenger 's seat
to transpor t objects. Items can a ls o
move into the area of the s ide a irbag or
the front airbag during braking or in a
sudden maneuve r. Objects near the air­
bags can become projectiles and cause
in jury, partic ularly when the seat is re­
clined.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy
can cause breathing prob lems for people
with a history of as thma or other breath­
ing cond itions.
- To reduce the risk of breath ing problems,
those with asthma or other respiratory
conditions s hou ld get fresh air r ight
away by get ting o ut of the veh icle or
open ing windows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags
deploy, wash your hands and face with mild soap and wate r before ea ting.
- Be careful not to get the dust into your
eyes, o r into any c uts or sc ratches .
- If the resid ue should get into your eyes,
f lush them w ith wate r. •

How supplemental side airbags work
Side airbags deploy instantly and con help re­
duce the risk of upper torso injuries for occu­
pants who ore properly restrained.

When the system is triggered, the airbag is
filled with propellant gas and breaks through
a seam in the seat surface area marked "AIR­
BAG". It expands between the side trim panel
and the passenger . In order to help provide
this additional protection, the side airbag
must inflate within a fraction of a second at
very high speed and with great force. The sup­ plemental side airbag could injure you if your
seating position is not proper or upright or if
items are located in the area where the sup­
plemental side airbag expands. This applies
especially to children

There is a lot that you and your passengers
must know and act accordingly to help the
safety belts and airbags do their job to pro­
vide supplemental protection.
A WARNING
An inflating side airbag can cause serious
or fatal injury. Improperly wearing safety
belts and improper seating positions in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury
and death whenever a vehicle is being
used.
- In order to reduce the risk of injury when
the supplemental side airbag inflates:
- Always sit in an upright position and
never lean against the area where the
supplemental side airbag is located.
- Never let a child or anyone else rest
their head against the side trim panel
in the area where the supplemental
side airbag inflates.
-Always make sure that safety belts are worn correctly,
- Do not let anyone sitting in the front
seat put their hand or any other parts
of their body out of the window.
-Always make sure that the side airbag can inflate without interference.
- Never install seat covers or replace­ ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
deploy.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.

-Objects between you and the airbag can

by interfering with the way the airbag
unfolds or by being pushed into you as

pockets that may interfere with side air­
bag deployment and can cause personal
injury in an accident.
- Always prevent the side a irbags from be­
ing damaged by heavy objects knocking
against or hitting the sides of the seat­
backs.
- The airbag system can only be trigge red
once.
If the airbag has been triggered,
the system must be replaced by an au­
thorized Audi dealership .
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc .) to
the original seat covers or to the seam in
the area of the side airbag module must
always be repaired immediately by an au­
thorized Audi dealer .
- If children are seated improperly, their
risk of injury increases in the case of an
accident ~ page 166, Child Safety .
- Never attempt to modify any compo­
nents of the airbag system in any way .
- In a side collision, side airbags will not
function properly if sensors cannot cor­ rectly measure increasing air pressure in ­
side the doors when air escapes through

larger, unclosed openings in the door
panel.
- Never drive with interior door trim pan­
els removed .
- Never drive when parts have been re­
moved from the inside door panel and
the open ings they leave have not been
properly closed.
- Never drive when loudspeakers in the
doors have been removed unless the
speaker holes have been p roperly
closed.
- Always make certain that openings are
covered or filled if additiona l speakers
or other equipment is installed in the
inside door panels .
- Always have work on the doors done by
an authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop.
Side curtain airbags
Description of side curtain airbags
The side curtain airbag sy stem can provide
supplemental protection to properly restrain ­
ed occupants .

The side curtain airbags are located on both
sides of the interior above the front and rear
side windows ~ fig . 159 . They are identified
by the word "AIRBAG" on the windshield
frame and the center roof pillar.
T he side curtain airbag system supplements
the safety belts and can help to reduce the risk of injury for occupants' heads and upper
torso on the side of the vehicle that is struck .,.

in a side collision. The side curtain airbag in­
f lates in side impacts and on ly when the vehi­
cle acce lerat ion reg istered by the contro l unit
is high enough. If this rate is below the refer­
ence value programmed into the control unit,
the side airbags will not be triggered, even
though the car may be badly damaged as a re­
sult of the collision .
It is not possible to de­
fine an a irbag tr igger ing range that will cover
every possible angle of impact , since the c ir­
cumstances w ill vary considerably between
one co llision and another . Important factors
include, for examp le, the nat ure (hard or soft)
of the impacting object, the ang le of impact,
vehicle speed, etc.

Aside from their normal safety function, safe­
ty belts work to he lp keep the driver or front
passenger in position in the event of a co lli­
sion so that the side curtain airbags can pro­
vide p rotection .
The airbag system is not a subst itute for your
safety belt. Rather, it is part of the overall oc­
cupant restraint system in your veh icle. Al­
ways remember that the airbag system can
only help to protect you if you are wea ring
your safety be lt and wear ing it prope rly . T his
i s ano ther reason why you shou ld always wear
your safety be lts, not jus t beca use the law re­
qu ires you to do soc;,

It
is important to remember that while the
side curtain a irbag sys tem is designed to he lp
reduce the like lihood o f serious injuries, other
inj uries, for example, swelling, bruising, and
minor abrasions can also be associated with
these airbags. Remember too, these airbags
will dep loy only once and only in certain k inds
of acc idents - your safety belts are always
there to offer protection .
The side curtain airbag system b asic all y
consists of:
- The electronic control module and externa l
s ide impact sensors
- The side curtai n airbags above the front and
rear side w indows - The airbag indicator light in the instrument
panel
T he airbag system is mo nitored elec tronically
to make certain i t is func tioning properly at all
times . Each time you turn on the ignition, the
airbag system indicator light will come on for
a few seconds (self diagnostics).
The side curtain airbag is not activated:
- if the ignition is tur ned off,
- in side co llisions whe n the accele ration
measured by the sensor is too low,
- in rear-end col lisions,
- in rollove rs .
A WARNING
-- Safety belts and the airbag system will
only provide protect ion when occupants
are in the proper seating posi tion

It is pos­
sible that the airbag will inflate when it is not supposed to, or will not inflate
when it should.
· How side curtain airbags work
Side curtain airbags can work together with
side airbags to help reduce the risk of head
and upper torso injuries for occupants who
are properly restrained.

Technical Modifications.
- Do not swive l the sun visors to the side i f
you have any ob jects clipped onto them
(for examp le pens) . If the airbag should
deploy, you could be injured by these ob­
jects .
- Use the bui lt - in coat hooks only for ligh t­
weight clothing . Never leave any heavy or
sharp-edged objects in the pockets that
may interfere with airbag dep loyment
and can cause personal injury in an acci­
dent.
- Never use hangers to hang clothing from
the hooks.
- On ly use factory-installed sun shades or,
in the case of shades installed after the
veh icle leaves the factory, only Audi roll­
up sunscreens may be used

Additional accessories and parts re­
placement.
- Always sit in proper seat ing pos ition and
wear safety belts wh ile traveling so that
the side cu rtain airbag s can he lp p rov ide
protec tion.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once . If the airbag has been triggered,
the system mus t be rep lace d by an au ­
thorized A udi dealer or qualified work ­
shop .
- Always have wor k involving the side cu r­
tain airbag system, removal and installa ­
tion of the airbag components, or ot her
repairs per formed by an authorized Audi
dea ler or qualified works hop. Otherwise
the airbag system may not work co rrect­
ly.
- Never attempt to mod ify any compo­
nents of the airbag system in any way.

• Pull on the connector attachments to make
sure they are properly attached to the LATCH
lower anchorage.
• Pull straps tight following the child re­
straint manufacturer's instructions.
Re leasin g
• Loosen the tension on the straps following
the chi ld restraint manufacturer 's instruc ­
tions .
• Depress the spring catche s to release the
anchorage hooks from the lower anchorag­
es .
Remember: Use tether straps to help keep the
child restrain t firmly in place.

- T hese anchors were developed only for
child safety seats us ing the "LATCH" sys­
tem .
- Never attach other child safety seats,
belts or ot her objects to these anchors .
-Always make sure that you hear a click when latching the seat in place . If you do
not hear a click the seat is not secure and
cou ld fly forward and h it the interior of
t he vehicle, or be ejected from the vehi­
cle .

- Always follow the child restraint system manufacturer's instructions for proper
installation of the child restraint system

A tether is a stra ight or V-shaped strap that
attaches the top part of a child restraint to
special anchorage points in th e vehicle.
T he purpose of the tethe r is to reduce the for­
ward movement of the child restraint in a
crash, in order to help reduce the risk of head
injury that cou ld be caused by striking t he ve­
hicle interior .
Forward facing child restraints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are requ ired by U.S .
federal regu lations to comply with c hild head
movement performance requirements. These
new perfo rmance requirements make a tether
neces sary on mos t new child safety sea ts.

Please start the engine soon or the system
will be turned off.
The warning ind icates that the system will be
turned off automa tically after 3 minutes. If
you wish to continue using the functions, you
have to start the engine .
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when
the vehicle is be ing driven , the battery can be­
come discharged. This happens most ly when
litt le energy is being generated and a great
deal consumed and the battery's state of
charge is not optimal.
To br ing t he ene rgy balance back into equili­
brium, consumers which require especially
l arge amounts of energy are temporarily cut
back or switched off. Heating systems in par­
ticular requ ire a great deal of energy. If you
notice, for example, that the heated seats* or
the heated rear window are not heating, they
have been temporar ily cut back or switched
off. These systems will be ava ilable again as
soon as the energy ba lance has bee n restored.
You will also notice that engine idle speed has
been increased slightly . This is normal and not
a cause for concern. By increasing engine idle
speed the add itional ene rgy required is gener­
ated and the ba ttery is charged.

After driv ing offro ad
- After driving offroad, remove branches and
other debris from the rad iator grille, under ­
body, and whee ls. Look especia lly for objects
(stones) that have been caught in the tire
tread .
- Clean t he body and the vehicle underbody
and inspect the vehicle for possible damag­
es.
- Clean off the dirty windows, headlights, tail
lights and the license plate.
- Perform a brake test (especially after driving
through water) .
A WARNING
- Be especially aware and attentive when
dr iv ing under d iff icult conditions. Dam­
ages to the vehicle and injuries may oc­
cur when driving at an excess ively high
speed or with incorrect driv ing maneu­
vers.
- Always adjust your speed and handling
to the roads, terra in, traffic and weather
condit ions. Drive especially slow if off­
road with low v is ibility.
- Please note that the wheels can spin and
the vehicle can brea k away when the ESC
Offroad Mode is switched off, espec ially
whentheroadisslipper~
- Driv ing stab ility is red uced in the ESC
Offroad mode.

conditions: slowly and with caution!
When driving offroad, observe the follow ing :
.. Never drive the vehicle in terrain which is
not suitab le for the vehicle, or which ex­
ceeds your driving ski lls. Never take any un­
necessary risks!
.. Drive slowly and caut iously!
.. Pay attention to the
ground clearanc e of
your veh icle! This may vary depending on
the load and composition of the ground and
t he environment. The d river is therefore re­
sponsib le for deciding whether a veh icle can
handle a specific situation .

Difficult terrain
Never drive in areas that are not fam iliar to
you and d rive slowly when offroad and be p re­
pared and expect the unexpected (e .g. pot ­
holes, boulders , tree stumps, etc.)
T o p reven t the veh icle from bottoming and
avo id damage to the unde rbody, yo u should
drive straight across severe bumps in the
ground with only one side of the ve hicle so
that only two of your whee ls cross the bumps.
Drive quickly th rough sandy or marshy offroad
sections and do not stop, if at all possible.
