Your vehicle is equipped with many
features that work together to
protect you and your passengers
during a crash.
The f ollowing pages explain how you
cantakeanactiveroleinprotecting
yourself and your passengers. However, you and your passengers
can’t take f ull advantage of these
f eatures unless you remain sitting in
the correct position and. In fact, some safety
f eatures can contribute to injuries if
they are not used properly. Some f eatures do not require any
action on your part. These include a
strong steel f ramework that f orms a
saf ety cage around the passenger
compartment, front and rear crush
zones, a collapsible steering column,
and tensioners that tighten the f ront
seat belts in a crash.

If the indicator comes on or the
beeper sounds when the driver’s seat
belt is latched and there is no f ront
seat passenger and no items on the
front seat, something may be
interf ering with the monitoring
system. Look f or and remove:Any items under the f ront
passenger’s seat.
Any object(s) hanging on the seat
or in the seat-back pocket.
Any object(s) touching the rear of
the seat-back. The lap/shoulder belt goes over
your shoulder, across your chest,
and across your hips.
To fasten the belt, insert the latch
plate into the buckle, then tug on the
belt to make sure the buckle is
latched (see page for how to
properly position the belt).
To unlock the belt, press the red
PRESS button on the buckle. Guide
the belt across your body so that it
retracts completely. After
exiting the vehicle, be sure the belt
is out of the way and will not get
closed in the door. All seat belts have an emergency
locking retractor. In normal driving,
the retractor lets you move f reely in
your seat while it keeps some
tension on the belt. During a collision
or sudden stop, the retractor
automatically locks the belt to help
restrain your body.
The seat belts in all positions except
the driver’s have a lockable retractor
that must be activated to secure a
child seat (see page ).
If the shoulder part of the belt is
pulled all the way out, the lockable
retractor will activate. The belt will
retract, but it will not allow the
passenger to move f reely.
If no obstructions are f ound, have
your vehicle checked by a dealer. 16

When your selection is successf ully
completed, the display changes as
shown above, and then goes back to
the customizable item screen.
If the ‘‘SETTING INCOMPLETE’’
message appears, go back to ‘‘AUTO
DOOR LOCK’’ and repeat the
procedure again.
There are f ive possible settings f or
automatic transmission models and
three possible settings f or manual
transmission models.
OFF The auto door unlock is
deactivated all the time.
DRIVER DOOR With SHIFT to P
The driver’s door unlocks when you
move the shift lever to Park with the
brake pedal depressed.
ALL DOORS With SHIFT to P All
the doors unlock when you move the
shift lever to Park with the brake
pedal depressed.
DRIVER DOOR With IGN OFF
The driver’s door unlocks when you
turn the ignition switch to the
LOCK (0) position. ALL DOORS With IGN OFF All

position.

If you forget and leave the key
in the ignition switch, lockout
prevention will not allow you to lock
the driver’s door. With any door
open and the key in the
ignition switch, locking with the
master door lock switch is disabled.
If the driver’s door is closed, the
lock tab on the driver’s door is not
disabled. Pulling the driver’s lock
tab rearward will lock all doors. If
you try to lock an open driver’s door
by pulling the lock tab rearward, the
driver’s door lock tab pops out
and unlocks the driver’s door.The childproof door locks are
designed to prevent children seated
in the rear f rom accidentally opening
the rear doors. Each rear door has a
lock lever near the edge. With the
lever in the LOCK position (lever is
down), the door cannot be opened
fromtheinsideregardlessof the
position of the lock tab. To open the
door, push the lock tab f orward and
use the outside door handle.
To lock any passenger’s door when
getting out of the vehicle, pull the
lock tab rearward and close the door.
To lock the driver’s door, remove
the key from the ignition switch,
pull the lock tab rearward or
push the front of the master switch,
then close the door.
When the vehicle speed reaches
about 10 mph (15 km/h) or more, all
the doors lock automatically.
When you shif t to P af ter driving, the
driver’s door unlocks.
When you set the power mode to
VEHICLE OFF (LOCK) af ter
driving, the driver’s door unlocks.

Theremotemaynotworkif:It is too close to the vehicle.
It is above or below the vehicle,
even when it is within its operating
range.
The handle of each f ront door has a
sensor. That sensor works with the
remote so you can automatically
unlock the door(s).
By def ault, only the driver’s door
unlocks when you grab its handle.
Each f ront door has a LOCK/
UNLOCK f eature.
To change the ‘‘KEYLESS ACCESS
BEEP’’ setting, see page . To unlock the remaining doors and
the trunk, press the UNLOCK
button on the remote or the rear of
the master door lock switch on the
driver’s door.
To change the ‘‘DOOR UNLOCK
MODE’’ setting, see page .
All the doors unlock when you
grab the handle of the front
passenger’s door.
When you unlock the door(s), some
exterior lights blink twice and the
system beeps twice.

This position mechani-
cally locks the transmission. Use
Park whenever you are turning of f or
starting the engine. To shif t out of
Park, you must press on the brake
pedal and have your f oot of f the
accelerator pedal. Press the release
buttononthefrontof theshiftlever
to move it.
To shift from Park to any position,
press firmly on the brake pedal,
and press the release button on the
front of the shift lever, then move
the lever. You cannot shift out of
Park when the ignition switch
is in the LOCK (0) or ACCESSORY
(I) position.Do this:
