EBU28040Main switch The positions of the main switch are as follows:
ON
All electrical systems are supplied with power. The
auxiliary light, taillight and license plate light come
on, and the engine can be started. The key cannot
be removed.TIPThe headlight comes on when the light switch is

All electrical systems are off. The key can be re-
moved.

Set the switch to“” to turn on the high beam.
Set this switch to“” to turn on the low beam.

the battery may discharge to the point that the
starter motor will not operate properly. If this
should happen, remove the battery and re-

center position. To cancel the turn signal lights,

With the key in the “ON” position, use this switch to
turn on the hazard lights (simultaneous flashing of
all turn signal lights).
The hazard lights are used in case of an emergen-
cy or to warn other drivers when your vehicle is
stopped where it might be a traffic hazard.NOTICEECB00860Do not use the hazard lights for an extended
length of time with the engine not running, oth-
erwise the battery may discharge.EBU18282Throttle lever Once the engine is running, pushing the throttle le-
ver will increase the engine speed.
Regulate the speed of the ATV by varying the
throttle position. Because the throttle is spring-
loaded, the ATV will decelerate, and the engine will
return to an idle any time the throttle lever is re-
leased.

EBU28010Steering lock To lock the steering
1. Turn the handlebar all the way to either side.
2. Open the steering lock cap, and then insert
the steering lock key.
3. Turn the key 1/8 turn counterclockwise, push
it in, and then turn the key 1/8 turn clockwise.
4. Check that the steering is locked, remove the
key, and then close the steering lock cap.

4To unlock the steering
1. Open the steering lock cap, and then insert
the key.
2. Turn the key 1/8 turn counterclockwise to re-
lease the lock.
3. Remove the key, and then close the steering
lock cap.
EBU18881Seat To remove the seat
Pull the seat lock lever upward and pull up the seat
at the rear.To install the seat
Insert the projections on the front of the seat into
the seat holders and push down on the seat at the
rear. Make sure that the seat is securely fitted.

OPERATION

the ATV. If there is a control or function you do not
understand, ask your Yamaha dealer.

prior to operating the engine for the first time.1. Set the parking brake.
2. Turn the fuel cock to “ON”.
3. Turn the key to “ON” and the engine stop
switch to“”.4. Shift the transmission into neutral. The neutral
indicator light should come on. If the indicator
light does not come on, have a Yamaha deal-
er check the electrical circuit.
TIPThis model is equipped with an ignition circuit cut-
off system. The engine can be started under the
following conditions.The transmission is in neutral.The clutch is disengaged with the shift pedal and
the drive select lever in any position. However, it
is recommended to shift into neutral before start-
ing the engine.5. Use the starter (choke) in reference to the fig-
ure:TIPBe sure to move the starter lever gently to keep the
correct starter lever assembly position.

Cold engine start with ambient temperature
below 5 °C (40 °F).

8 2. Connect the positive battery lead first, then
connect the negative battery lead by installing
their bolt. NOTICE: When installing the bat-
tery, the main switch must be off, and the
positive lead must be connected before
the negative lead.

3. Install the battery holding plate by installing
the bolts, and then hook the band to secure
the owner’s tool kit.
4. Install the seat. (See page 4-14.)
EBU28153Replacing a fuse The main fuse and signaling system fuse are locat-
ed under the seat. (See page 4-14.)
If a fuse is blown, replace it as follows.
1. Turn the key to “OFF” and turn off all electrical

the main switch when checking or replacing a
fuse.

82. Remove the blown fuse, and then install a
new fuse of the specified amperage.
WARNING! Always use a fuse of the spec-
ified rating, and never use a substitute ob-
ject in place of the proper fuse. An
improper fuse or a substitute object can
cause damage to the electrical system,
which could lead to a fire.

3. Turn the key to “ON” and turn on the electrical
circuits to check if the devices operate.
4. If the fuse immediately blows again, have a
Yamaha dealer check the electrical system.EBU28160Headlight bulb If the headlight bulb burns out, have a Yamaha
dealer replace it.
EBU28170Headlight beam If a headlight beam adjustment is necessary, have
a Yamaha dealer perform it.EBU25601Replacing the tail/brake light bulb If the tail/brake light bulb burns out, replace it as
follows.
1. Remove the lens by removing the screws.
2. Remove the burnt-out bulb by pushing it in
and turning it counterclockwise. Specified fuses:
