CAUTION
When working near the electric cooling fans or radiator grille
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Be sure the engine switch is
off. With the engine switch in the “ON” position, the electric cooling fans may
automatically start to run if the air conditioning is on and/or the coolant tem-
perature is high. (P. 371)
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Be sure the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch is off. With the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in IGNITION
ON mode, the electric cooling fans may automatically start to run if the air
conditioning is on and/or the coolant temperature is high. (P. 371)
Safety glasses
Wear safety glasses to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from
getting in your eyes.
NOTICE
If you remove the air cleaner filter
Driving with the air cleaner filter removed may cause excessive engine wear
due to dirt in the air. Also, a backfire could cause a fire in the engine com-
partment.
If the fluid level is low or high
It is normal for the brake fluid level to go down slightly as the brake pads
wear or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high.
If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, it may indicate a serious problem.

After changing the engine oil (diesel engine only)
The engine oil maintenance data should be reset. Perform the following pro-
cedures:
Switch the display to the trip meter “A” when the engine is running.
(P. 198)
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch off.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
Turn the “ENGINE START STOP” switch off.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system
While pressing the display change button (P. 198), turn the
engine switch to the “ON” position (do not start the engine because
reset mode will be canceled). Continue to press and hold the button
until the trip meter displays “000000”.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
While pressing the display change button (P. 198), turn the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch to the IGNITION ON mode (do not
start the engine because otherwise the reset mode will be can-
celed). Continue to press and hold the button until the trip meter
displays “000000”.
CAUTION
Used engine oil
Used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may
cause skin disorders such as inflammation and skin cancer, so care
should be taken to avoid prolonged and repeated contact. To remove used
engine oil from your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Dispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do
not dispose of used oil and filters in household trash, in sewers or onto the
ground. Call any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, service station or auto parts store for
information concerning recycling or disposal.
Do not leave used engine oil within the reach of children.

Air conditioning filter
The air conditioning filter must be changed regularly to maintain air
conditioning efficiency.
Removal method
Turn the engine switch (vehicles without a smart entry &
start system) or “ENGINE START STOP” switch (vehicles
with a smart entry & start system) off.
Open the glove box. Slide off
the damper.
Push in the glove box on the
vehicle’s outer side to discon-
nect the claws.
Pull out the glove box and dis-
connect the lower claws.

Checking interval
Replace the air conditioning filter according to the maintenance schedule. In
dusty areas or areas with heavy traffic flow, early replacement may be
required. (For scheduled maintenance information, please refer to the
“Toyota Service Booklet” or “Toyota Warranty Booklet”.)
If air flow from the vents decreases dramatically
The filter may be clogged. Check the filter and replace if necessary.
Remove the filter cover.
Left-hand drive vehicles
Right-hand drive vehicles
Replace it with a new one. The “UP” marks shown on the
filter should be pointing up.STEP5

Make sure that a filter is always installed.
Using the air conditioning system without a filter may cause damage to the
system.
