Alarm
: If equipped
The system sounds the alarm and flashes lights when forced entry is
detected.
Triggering of the alarm
The alarm is triggered in the following situations when the alarm
is set.
A locked door or back door is unlocked or opened in any way
other than using the entry function or wireless remote control.
The hood is opened.
If equipped, the intrusion sensor detects something moving
inside the vehicle. (An intruder gets in the vehicle.)
If equipped, the quarter windows or back door window are
tapped or broken.
Setting the alarm system
Close the doors and hood,
and lock all doors using the
entry function or wireless
remote control. The system
will be set automatically after
30 seconds.
The indicator light changes
from being on to flashing when
the system is set.

Intrusion sensor (if equipped)
The intrusion sensor detects intruders or movement in the vehicle.
When an intruder or movement is detected, the alarm will be trig-
gered.
The intrusion sensor can be canceled using the cancel switch.
This system is designed to deter and prevent vehicle theft but does
not guarantee absolute security against all intrusions.
Canceling the intrusion sensor
Turn the “POWER” switch off
and press the intrusion sensor
cancel switch.
Pressing the switch again will re-
enable the intrusion sensor.
The intrusion sensor will revert to
on each time the “POWER”
switch is turned to ON mode.
Deactivating or stopping the alarm
Do one of the following to deactivate or stop the alarm:
Unlock the doors using the entry function or wireless remote
control.
Start the hybrid system. (The alarm will be deactivated or
stopped after a few seconds.)

System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free type alarm system.
Items to check before locking the vehicle
To prevent unexpected triggering of the alarm and vehicle theft, make sure
of the following:
Nobody is in the vehicle.
The windows is closed before the alarm is set.
No valuables or other personal items are left in the vehicle.
Triggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the following situations.
(Stopping the alarm deactivates the alarm system.)
The doors are unlocked using the
mechanical key.
A person inside the vehicle opens a
door, the back door or hood.
The 12-volt battery is recharged or
replaced when the vehicle is locked.

Alarm-operated door lock
When the alarm is operating, the doors are locked automatically to pre-
vent intruders.
Do not leave the key inside the vehicle when the alarm is operating, and
make sure the key is not inside the vehicle when recharging or replacing
the 12-volt battery.
Canceling and automatic re-enabling of the intrusion sensor
The alarm will still be set even when the intrusion sensor is canceled.
After the intrusion sensor is canceled, pressing the “POWER” switch or
unlocking the doors using the entry function or wireless remote control
will re-enable the intrusion sensor.
When the alarm system is set again, the intrusion sensor will be set.
Intrusion sensor considerations
The sensor may trigger the alarm in the following situations:
Persons or pets are in the vehicle.
A window is open.
In this case, the sensor may detect the
following:
• Wind or the movement of objects
such as leaves and insects inside
the vehicle
• Ultrasonic waves emitted from
devices such as the intrusion sen-
sors of other vehicles
• The movement of people outside
the vehicle

Driving the vehicle
The following procedures should be observed to ensure safe driv-
ing:
Starting the hybrid system

Driving
With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift position to D.

Check that the shift position indicator shows D. (P. 236)
Release the parking brake. (P. 234)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the
accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Stopping
With the shift position in D, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
When the vehicle will be stopped for an extended period of time,
shift the shift position to P. (P. 227)
Parking the vehicle
Stop the vehicle completely.
Set the parking brake. (P. 234)
Shift the shift position to P. (P. 227)
Check that the shift position indicator shows P. (P. 224)
Press the “POWER” switch to stop the hybrid system.
Slowly release the brake pedal.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the electronic key
on your person.
When parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.

When the P position control system malfunctions
The “POWER” switch will not be able to be turned off. In such a case, the
switch can be turned off after applying the parking brake.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
Meter display
When the “POWER” switch is turned off, each display will extinguish as fol-
lows.
The shift position indicator will extinguish after approximately 2 seconds.
The odometer, clock, etc. will extinguish after approximately 30 seconds.
(Each display will also extinguish immediately if a door is locked before 30
seconds has elapsed)
CAUTION
When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not
depress the accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any cir-
cumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
Stopping the hybrid system in an emergency
If you want to stop the hybrid system in an emergency while driving the vehi-
cle, press and hold the “POWER” switch for more than 3 seconds, or press it
briefly 3 times or more in succession.
However, do not touch the “POWER” switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the hybrid system off while driving will not cause loss of
steering or braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.
This will make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you should pull over
and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

Headlight control sensor (if equipped)
Automatic light off system
When the light switch is in the
, , or position: The
headlights turn off automatically if the “POWER” switch is turned to
ACCESSORY mode or OFF.
When the light switch is in the AUTO position: The headlights and all
lights turn off automatically if the “POWER” switch is turned to ACCES-
SORY mode or OFF and the driver’s door is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the “POWER” switch to ON mode, or turn the
light switch off once and then back to the
, , or posi-
tion.
The sensor may not function properly if
an object is placed on the sensor, or any-
thing that blocks the sensor is affixed to
the windshield.
Doing so interferes with the sensor
detecting the level of ambient light and
may cause the automatic headlight sys-
tem to malfunction.
Air conditioning operation may also be
interrupted.
