X The tyres should always be inflated to the
recomm ended tyr epressure.
X Remove unnecessary lo ads.
X Remov eroof carriers when they are not
needed.
X Warm up the engine at low engine speeds.
X Avoid frequent acceleration or braking.
X observe the service intervals in the Service
Booklet or in the service interval display.
Have all the maintenan cework carried in
accordanc ewith Daimler AG regulations.
Fuel consumption also increases when driv-
ing in cold weather, in stop-start traffic and in
hilly terrain. Short journeys
! Vehicles with adiesel particle filter: if
the vehicle is mostly driven for short dis-
tances, it is possible that malfunctions may
occur durin gthe automa ticc leaning of the
diesel particle filter. This may lead to fuel
collectin ginthe engin eoil and cause
engin efailure. Therefore, if you frequently
drive short distances, you should tak ea20

intermediate stops and use in mountainous
terrain or on poor road surfaces.
For example, if the vehicle is used under ardu-

Diesel (EN 590)
Fuel grade
G
WARNING
If you mix diesel fue lwithp etrol, th eflash
poin toft his fuel mixtur eislower than that of
pur ediesel fuel. When the engine is running,
components in the exhaust system may over-
heat unnoticed. There is arisk of fire.
Never refuel with petrol. Never add petrol to
diesel fuel.
! When refuelling, only use diesel fuel that
conforms to the European standard EN 590
or is of equivalen tquality .Fuel that does
not con form to EN 59 0can lead to
increased wear as well as damag etothe
engin eand exhaust sys tem.
! Do not use the following:
R marine diesel
R heating oil
R bio-diesel
R vegetable oil
R petrol
R paraffin
R kerosene
Do not mix such fuels with diesel fuel and
do not use any special additives. This can
otherwis elead to engine damage .This
does not include flo wimprover additives.
For further information, se e"Flow improv-
ers".
! Vehicles with adiesel particle filter: in
countries outside the EU, only refuel with
low-sulphur Eur odiesel with asulphur con-
ten tunde r50p pm; otherwise the emission
contro lsystem could be damaged.
! Vehicles without adiesel particle fil-
ter: in countries where only diesel fuel with
ah igh sulphur conten tisavailable ,you will
need to carry out your vehicle' soil change
at shorter intervals. More information
abou tthe interval for oil change can be obtained from any qualified specialist
workshop.
Usually you will fin dinformation about the
fuel grade on the pump. If you cannot find the
labe lont he petrol pump, ask the filling sta-
tion staff.
Infor mation on refuelling (Y page 175).
Low outside temperatures
In winter months, diesel fuel with an improved
cold flow quality is available. In Europe, the
EN 590 standard defines various climate-
dependent temperature categories. Malfunc-
tions can be avoide dbyrefuelling with diesel
fuel that corresponds to the climatic specifi-
cations outlined in EN 590. At unusually low
outside temperatures, it is possible that the
flow characteristics of the diesel fuel could be
insufficient .Accordingly, dies elfue lfrom
warmer areas may not be suitabl efor opera-
tion in colder climat icconditions.
i Further informatio noncountry-specific
fuel properties can be obtained from oil
companies, e.g. at filling stations.
Flow imp rovers
To improve the low-temperatur eresistanc eof
diesel fuel, aflow improver can be attached.
The effec tiveness of aflow improver is not
guaranteed for every fuel.
Only use flow improvers tested and approved
by Mercedes-Benz. Durin guse, please
observe the information on operation.
Correc tdosage and sufficien tmixing are deci-
sive in improving low-temperature resistance
with the flow improver. Overdosage can
potentially even decrease low-temperature
resistanc eand must therefor ebeavoided.
Follo wthe manufacturer's guidelines on dos-
age.
Mix the additive int othe diesel in good time,
before the flo wcharacteristic softhe diesel
becom einsufficie nt.O therwise, malfunctions
can only be rectified by heating the entire fuel
system, e.g. by parking in aheated garage. 426

Engine oil viscosity Viscosit
ydescribes the flow characteristics
of afluid. If an engine oil has ahigh viscosity
rating, it flows slowly ;the lower the viscosity,
the faster it flows.
Engin eoil selection is based on the respective
outside temperatures and in accordance with
the SAE classification (viscosity). The table
shows you which SAE classifications are to be
used. The low-temperature properties of
engine oils can be significantly impaired dur-
ing operation due to, for example, ageing or
soot and fuel accretion .Itistherefore
strongly recommended to observe regular oil
changes usin ganapproved engine oil with the
appropriate SAE classification. Brake fluid
G
WARNING
Over aperiod of time, the brak efluid absorbs
moisture from the air; This lowers its boiling
point.
If the boiling point of the brake fluid is too low,
vapour pocket smay form in the brake system
when the brakes are applied hard (e.g. when
driving downhill). This impairs braking effi-
ciency.
You shoul dhave the brake fluid renewed at
regular intervals. The brake fluid change inter-
vals can be found in the Service Booklet.
Only use brake fluid approved by Mercedes-
Benz according to MB Approval 331.0.

engine parts.
