9 mph (15 km/h).
You could therefore be locked out when:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is being tested on a
dynamometer.XTo deactivate: press and hold button :
for about five seconds until a tone sounds.XTo activate: press and hold button ; for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
i If you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer ( Y page 210).
Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered ( Y page 67).
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey ( Y page 73).XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.XTurn the mechanical key counterclockwise
to position 1.
The door is unlocked.XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
XOpen the driver's door.XClose the front-passenger door and the
trunk lid.XPress the locking button ( Y page 78).XCheck whether the locking knob on the
front-passenger door is still visible. Press
down the locking knob by hand, if
necessary.XClose the driver's door.XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey ( Y page 73).XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.Doors79Opening/closingZ

XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 1.XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.XMake sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.
Trunk
Important safety notes
Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk. You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
GWARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function.
If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure
themselves when doing so or be seriously or
even fatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight. The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts.GWARNING
Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the
passenger compartment or trunk unless they
are firmly secured in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction
R an accident
GWARNING
Make sure the trunk lid is closed when the
engine is running and while driving. Among
other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO)
gases may enter the vehicle interior resulting
in unconsciousness and death.
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
To open the trunk lid completely, a minimum
clearance of 5.58 ft (1.70 m) above the
ground is necessary.
The trunk lid can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R opened automatically from outside
R opened automatically from inside
R locked separately

XTo open: pull remote operating switch for
trunk lid : until the trunk lid opens.
Locking the trunk separately
You can lock the trunk separately. If you then
unlock the vehicle centrally, the trunk
remains locked and cannot be opened.
XClose the trunk lid.XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey ( Y page 73).XInsert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as the stop.XTurn the mechanical key clockwise from
position 1 to position 2.XRemove the mechanical key.XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.Unlocking the trunk (mechanical key)
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
If the trunk cannot be unlocked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the trunk lid, the anti-theft alarm system
will be triggered ( Y page 67).XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey ( Y page 73).XInsert the mechanical key into the trunk lid
lock as far as the stop.XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
from position 1 as far as it will go to
position 2 and pull the trunk lid handle.
The trunk is unlocked.XTurn the mechanical key back to position
1 and remove it.XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Trunk emergency release
You can open the trunk lid from inside the
vehicle with the emergency release button.

GWARNING
Remove wristwatches and any jewelry such
as rings or bracelets. You could otherwise get
caught, be injured and damage the vehicle.
Always grip the soft top at the indicated
gripping points when closing the soft top
manually. You could otherwise be injured.
XDepress the parking brake.XOpen the side windows.XLower the head restraints (automatically
( Y page 105) or manually ( Y page 105)).XRemove the SmartKey from the ignition
lock.XOpen the trunk.XTake the two straps out of the vehicle tool
kit ( Y page 290).XTake the hex-socket wrench out of the
Operator's Manual wallet and keep it with
you.XTo open the cover on the left hand side
in the trunk: turn rotary catch : counter-
clockwise and fold down cover ;.XInsert hex-socket wrench = into valve
screw ? on the hydraulic pump.XTurn valve screw ? of the hydraulic pump
with hex-socket wrench = counter-
clockwise a full turn.

XOn both sides of the trunk, tear trim A
along the perforation in the direction of the
arrow.
Left trim in the trunk (example)
XOn both sides, behind the trim, pull out
catch B as far as it will go and turn it
approximately a quarter of a turn counter-
clockwise.XMake sure catch B is not pulled in again.
If this happens, pull out catch B again as
far as possible and turn it about a quarter
turn counter-clockwise.
The soft-top compartment hinges are on the
right-hand and left-hand side in the gap
between the lid of the soft-top compartment
and the trunk sealing.

XOne person stands on the right-hand side
and the other person on the left-hand side
of the vehicle.GWARNING
You could become trapped or injured.
Grip the soft-top compartment with one hand
and support yourself with the other hand on
the edge of the trunk lid as illustrated.
XGrip the soft-top compartment with one
hand as illustrated.XUse the other hand to support yourself on
the edge of the trunk lid as illustrated.XLift soft-top compartment cover F up as
far as it will go. In doing so, pull soft-top
compartment cover F to the rear, applying
constant force.GWARNING
Do not reach between the cover halves and
the hinges. You could otherwise become
trapped.
XReach under the tip of soft top G in the
soft-top compartment from the right-hand
and left-hand sides.XLift the soft top out of the soft-top
compartment and guide it forwards in the
direction of the arrow onto windshield
frame H.ITo openJTo lockXPull off the cover of the roof lock behind the
overhead control panel.XInsert the hex-socket wrench into the roof
lock.XTurn the hex-socket wrench clockwise I
as far as possible.
! Make sure the Allen key is turned counter-
clockwise as far as possible during the
following step. The soft top may otherwise
not be fully locked.

XTurn the hex-socket wrench counter-
clockwise J as far as possible.
The soft top is now pre-locked on the
windshield frame.XMove material tensioning frame K to an
upright position.
! Make sure the soft-top compartment
cover does not collide with the material
tensioning frame during the following step.
XLower soft-top compartment cover L.XWith your hand flat, press down the
material tensioning frame until it rests on
soft-top support M of the soft-top
compartment cover.GWARNING
You could trap your hands.
Do not push the soft-top compartment cover
forwards in front of the soft-top support with
your hands.
XWith your hand flat, press the soft-top
compartment cover forwards/downwards
on both sides simultaneously until it
engages in the guide. Apply your hands to
the points indicated with arrows.
At the same time, press the material
tensioning frame gently downwards with
your flat hand.NTo lockXInsert the hex-socket wrench into the roof
lock.XTurn the hex-socket wrench counter-
clockwise N as far as possible.XHave the soft-top mechanism repaired
immediately at a specialist workshop.
i Press the soft-top compartment cover
again if the trunk lid cannot be opened.

Wind deflector ; extends. The head
restraints on the rear bench seats and
AIRCAP wind screen = move to the center
position simultaneously.
If one or two passengers in the rear
compartment then fasten their seat belts, the
head restraints in the rear bench seats and
AIRCAP wind screen = move to the upper
position.
i If, when AIRCAP is extended, you park
your vehicle with the soft top down and
remove the SmartKey, the wind deflector
and the head restraints in the rear
compartment retract automatically. When
you return to your vehicle and start the
engine again, the wind deflector and the
head restraints in the rear compartment
are extended again.
i It is no longer possible to retract/extend
AIRCAP if you are driving faster than
100 mph (160 km/h).
Retracting AIRCAPXTurn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.XOpen the cover on the lower section of the
center console.XPress AIRCAP button :.
The two indicator lamps on the AIRCAP
button go out. Wind deflector ; retracts.
The head restraints on the rear bench seats
and AIRCAP wind screen = move to the
lowest position simultaneously.
i If there are passengers wearing seat belts
in the rear compartment, the head
restraints on the rear bench seats and the
AIRCAP wind screen remain in the upper
position.
Retracting the head restraints on the
rear bench seats from the driver's seat
To improve the rear view, you can retract the
head restraints on the rear bench seats
individually ( Y page 105). The wind deflector
remains in its current position.
Installing/removing the AIRCAP wind
screen
Preparation
You will need a 4 mm hex-socket wrench to
install/remove the AIRCAP wind screen.
Before installing or removing the AIRCAP
wind screen:
XTurn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.XOpen the folding roof fully ( Y page 87).XExtend the head restraints in the rear
compartment fully ( Y page 105).
Removing
Bolts on the AIRCAP wind screen between the head
restraints in the rear compartment
XUse the 4 mm hex-socket wrench to turn
the bolts on both sides counter-clockwise
by about 90° and loosen them.XPull the bolts out of the brackets on the
