XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 1.XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.XMake sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.
Trunk
Important safety notes
Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk. You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
GWARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function.
If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure
themselves when doing so or be seriously or
even fatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight. The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts.GWARNING
Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the
passenger compartment or trunk unless they
are firmly secured in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction
R an accident
GWARNING
Make sure the trunk lid is closed when the
engine is running and while driving. Among
other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO)
gases may enter the vehicle interior resulting
in unconsciousness and death.
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
To open the trunk lid completely, a minimum
clearance of 5.58 ft (1.70 m) above the
ground is necessary.
The trunk lid can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R opened automatically from outside
R opened automatically from inside
R locked separately

XPress the % button on the SmartKey.XPull handle :.XRaise the trunk lid.
Closing
GWARNING
To prevent possible personal injury, always
keep hands and fingers away from the trunk
opening when closing the trunk lid. Be
especially careful when small children are
around.
XPull the trunk lid down using recess :.XIf necessary, lock the vehicle with
the & button on the SmartKey(Y page 70) or with KEYLESS-GO
( Y page 71).
i
If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
trunk, the trunk lid cannot be locked and
then opens again.
Opening/closing automatically from
outside
Important safety notes

You can unlock and open the trunk lid
simultaneously with the SmartKey.
XPress and hold the F button on the
SmartKey until the trunk lid opens.
Opening automatically from the
inside

other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO)
gases may enter the vehicle interior resulting
in unconsciousness and death.
You can open the trunk lid from the driver's
seat when the vehicle is stationary and
unlocked.

The switches on the driver's door take
precedence.
i The side windows cannot be operated
from the rear when the override feature for
the side windows is activated ( Y page 59).XTurn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the
ignition lock.XTo open: press the corresponding switch.XTo close: pull the corresponding switch.

You can start automatic operation when
opening and closing the front door windows
and when opening the rear door windows.
To do so, briefly press or pull the switch to
beyond the point of resistance in the
relevant direction. You can stop automatic
operation by pressing or pulling again.
i You can continue to operate the side
windows after you switch off the engine or
remove the SmartKey. This function is
available for up to five minutes or until the
driver's or front-passenger door is opened.
Opening and closing all side windows
(Cabriolet)
XOpen the cover on the lower section of the
center console.
The switch for all side windows is under the
cover.XTo open all side windows manually:
press switch : as far as the point of
resistance.XTo open all side windows fully: press
switch : beyond the point of resistance.XTo close all side windows: pull
switch :.
Convenience opening (Coupe)
You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving. To do this, the key is used to carry out
the following functions simultaneously:
R unlock the vehicle
R open the side windows
R open the panorama roof with power tilt/
sliding panel and the roller sunblind
R switch on the seat ventilation for the
driver's seat
i The convenience opening feature can
only be operated using the SmartKey. The
SmartKey must be close to the driver's
door handle.
XPoint the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's
door handle.XPress and hold the % button until the
side windows and the panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are in the desired
position.
If the roller sunblind of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel is closed, the
roller sunblind is opened first.
XPress and hold the % button again until
the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel is in the desired position.XTo interrupt convenience opening:

XTo open: pull soft-top switch : until the
entire soft top is stowed away in the trunk.
The Convertible Top in Operation
message appears in the multifunction
display.
If you drive faster than 25 mph (40 km/h)
during the opening procedure, the opening
procedure is stopped and the Open/Close
Convertible Top Completely message
is displayed in the multifunction display.
Reduce speed back to under 25 mph
( 40 km/h) and pull the soft top switch again
to fully open the soft top.XTo close: press and hold soft-top
switch : until the soft top is fully closed.
The Convertible Top in Operation
message appears in the multifunction
display.
If you drive faster than 25 mph (40 km/h)
during the closing procedure, the closing
procedure is stopped and the Open/Close
Convertible Top Completely message
is displayed in the multifunction display.
Reduce speed back to under 25 mph
(40 km/h) and push the soft top switch
again to fully close the soft top.
Opening and closing using the
SmartKey
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Make sure nobody can be trapped or injured
by moving parts such as the soft-top linkage
or soft-top compartment cover when opening
or closing the soft top.
If there is a risk of entrapment, immediately
release the % or & button on the
SmartKey. The soft-top mechanism stops
immediately.
Opening and closing
i The SmartKey must be close to the
driver's door handle.
XPoint the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's
door handle.XTo open: press and hold the % button
on the SmartKey until the soft top is fully
opened.
The Convertible Top in operation
message appears in the multifunction
display. The seat ventilation is switched on.
The rear side windows open.XTo close: press and hold the & button
on the SmartKey until the soft top is fully
closed.
The Convertible Top in Operation
message appears in the multifunction
display. The soft top and the side windows
close.
Closing the soft top manually
If the soft top cannot be closed automatically,
check the following points:
R Is the trunk partition engaged
( Y page 93)?
R Are the head restraints on the rear bench
seats extended?
R Is the trunk lid closed?
R Is the on-board voltage sufficient?
Start the engine if necessary.
If automatic operation still does not work, the
soft top can be closed manually.
This work must be performed by two persons.
i Closing the soft top manually is a
complex, technically demanding process
which requires a great deal of force. Only
close the soft top manually in extreme
emergencies. Preferably, contact a
qualified specialist workshop.

Wind deflector ; extends. The head
restraints on the rear bench seats and
AIRCAP wind screen = move to the center
position simultaneously.
If one or two passengers in the rear
compartment then fasten their seat belts, the
head restraints in the rear bench seats and
AIRCAP wind screen = move to the upper
position.
i If, when AIRCAP is extended, you park
your vehicle with the soft top down and
remove the SmartKey, the wind deflector
and the head restraints in the rear
compartment retract automatically. When
you return to your vehicle and start the
engine again, the wind deflector and the
head restraints in the rear compartment
are extended again.
i It is no longer possible to retract/extend
AIRCAP if you are driving faster than
100 mph (160 km/h).
Retracting AIRCAPXTurn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.XOpen the cover on the lower section of the
center console.XPress AIRCAP button :.
The two indicator lamps on the AIRCAP
button go out. Wind deflector ; retracts.
The head restraints on the rear bench seats
and AIRCAP wind screen = move to the
lowest position simultaneously.
i If there are passengers wearing seat belts
in the rear compartment, the head
restraints on the rear bench seats and the
AIRCAP wind screen remain in the upper
position.
Retracting the head restraints on the
rear bench seats from the driver's seat
To improve the rear view, you can retract the
head restraints on the rear bench seats
individually ( Y page 105). The wind deflector
remains in its current position.
Installing/removing the AIRCAP wind
screen
Preparation
You will need a 4 mm hex-socket wrench to
install/remove the AIRCAP wind screen.
Before installing or removing the AIRCAP
wind screen:
XTurn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.XOpen the folding roof fully ( Y page 87).XExtend the head restraints in the rear
compartment fully ( Y page 105).

Bolts on the AIRCAP wind screen between the head

XUse the 4 mm hex-socket wrench to turn
the bolts on both sides counter-clockwise
by about 90° and loosen them.XPull the bolts out of the brackets on the

The turn signals, high-beam headlamps and
the high-beam flasher are operated using the
combination switch ( Y page 119).
! Switch off the parking lamps and standing
lamps when you leave the vehicle. This
prevents the battery from discharging.
The exterior lighting (except the parking/
standing lamps) switches off automatically if
you:
R remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock
R open the driver's door with the SmartKey
in position 0
If you hear a warning tone when you leave the
vehicle, the lights may still be switched on.
XTurn the light switch to c or à .Low-beam headlampsXTo switch on the low-beam headlamps:
turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to
position 2 or start the engine.XTurn the light switch to L.
The L indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up.
Daytime running lamps
Daytime running lamps in Canada
The daytime running lamps function is
required by law in Canada. It cannot therefore
be deactivated.
XTurn the light switch to c or à .
With the engine running: depending on the
ambient light, the daytime running lamps or
the low-beam headlamps are switched on.
When the low-beam headlamps are
switched on, the L indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.
When the engine is running and the vehicle is
stationary: if you move the selector lever from
a drive position to P, the daytime running
lamps/low-beam headlamps go out after
three minutes.
When the engine is running, the vehicle is
stationary and in high ambient light
brightness: if you turn the light switch
to T , the daytime running lamps and the
parking lamps are switched on.
If the engine is running and you turn the light
switch to L, the manual settings take
precedence over the daytime running lamps.
Daytime running lamps in the USA
In the USA, the daytime running lamps are
deactivated upon delivery from the factory.
XTo activate the daytime running

With the engine running: depending on the

switch to T or L , the manual settings
take precedence over the daytime running
lamps.
Automatic headlamp mode
XTo switch on automatic headlamp
mode: turn the light switch to c or
à .
SmartKey in position 1 in the ignition lock:
the parking lamps are switched on or off
automatically depending on the brightness
of the ambient light.
With the engine running: depending on the
brightness of the ambient light, the daytime
running lamps 6
or the low-beam headlamps
are switched on or off automatically.
When the low-beam headlamps are
switched on, the L indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.GWARNING
If the light switch is set to c or à , the
low-beam headlamps will not come on
automatically if it is foggy. This could
endanger you and others. Therefore, turn the
light switch to L in fog.
The automatic headlamp feature is only an
aid. The driver is responsible for the vehicle's
lighting at all times.
Front fog lamps
Only vehicles with front fog lamps have the
fog lamps function.
GWARNING
If you suspect that driving conditions will be
foggy, turn the light switch to L before you
start your journey. Otherwise, your vehicle
may not be visible and you could endanger
yourself and others.
XTo switch on the front fog lamps: turn
the SmartKey in the ignition lock to position
2 or start the engine.XTurn the light switch to L or c or
à .XPress the N button.
The green N indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.XTo switch off the front fog lamps: press
the N button.
The green N indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster goes out.
i If you switch the engine off (SmartKey in
position 1 in the ignition lock) and then
restart it, the previous fog lamp settings are
restored.
Rear fog lamp
XTo switch on the rear fog lamp: turn the
SmartKey in the ignition lock to position 2
or start the engine.XTurn the light switch to L or c or
à .
If the light switch is set to c or à ,
the rear fog lamp only lights up if the low-
beam headlamps are on.XPress the R button.
The yellow R indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up.XTo switch off the rear fog lamp: press the
R button.
The yellow R indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster goes out.
i If you switch the engine off (SmartKey in
position 1 in the ignition lock) and then

restart it, the previous rear fog lamp
settings are restored.
Headlamp cleaning system
The headlamps are cleaned automatically if
the "Wipe with washer fluid" function is
operated ten times while the lights are on and
the engine is running ( Y page 125).
Combination switch
Turn signals

switch briefly to the pressure point in the

The corresponding turn signal flashes three

High-beam headlamps
XTo switch on the high-beam headlamps:
turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to
position 2 or start the engine.XTurn the light switch to L or c or
à .XPress the combination switch beyond the
pressure point in the direction of
arrow :.
In the c or à position, the high-
beam headlamps are only switched on
when it is dark and the engine is running.
The K indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up when the high-beam
headlamps are switched on.XTo switch off the high-beam
headlamps: move the combination switch
back to its normal position.
The K indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster goes out.
High-beam flasher
XTo switch on: turn the SmartKey in the
ignition lock to position 1 or 2 or start the
engine.XPull the combination switch in the direction
of arrow =.
Hazard warning lamps
The hazard warning lamps automatically
switch on if:
R an air bag is deployed.
R the vehicle is slowed down severely from a
speed of over 45 mph (70 km/h) and comes
to a halt.
