CAUTION
●Do not leave a door or window open if the curved glass is coated with a metal-
lized film such as a silver-colored one. Reflected sunlight may cause the glass to
act as a lens, causing a fire.
●Always apply the parking brake, select 1st gear or Reverse, stop the engine and
lock the vehicle.
Do not leave the vehicle unattend ed while the engine is running.
●Do not stop the engine without first chec king the gear indicator to confirm that
either 1st gear or Reverse is selected.
●Do not leave the engine running in an area with snow build-up, or where it is
snowing. If snowbanks build up around the vehicle while the engine is running,
exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehi cle. This may lead to death or a seri-
ous health hazard.
●Do not touch the hood grilles, bezels in the
radiator grilles, or exhaust pipes and sur-
rounding area while the engine is running
or immediately after tu rning the engine off.
Doing so may cause burns.

CAUTION
■When washing the vehicle
Do not apply water to the inside of the engine compartment. Doing so may cause
the electrical components etc. to catch fire.
■To prevent burns
When washing the vehicle, be careful not to
touch the hood grilles, bezels in the radiator
grilles, or exhaust pipes and surrounding area
until they have cooled sufficiently, as these
components may cause burns.

NOTICE
■When washing the vehicle
Observe the following precautions to prevent damage to the exhaust system:
■Cleaning the exterior lights
●Wash carefully. Do not use organic substances or scrub with a hard brush.
This may damage the surfaces of the lights.
●Do not apply wax on the surfaces of the lights.
Wax may cause damage to the lenses.
●Do not flush water over or into the hood
grilles (especially the arrowed portion in
the illustration).
●Do not flush water over or into the exhaust
pipes and surrounding area or the bezels in
the radiator grilles until they have cooled
sufficiently.

NOTICE
■Rear quarter glass
As the rear quarter glass is made of polycarbonate and easily damaged, observe
the following precautions:
●When cleaning the rear quarter glass:
• Do not use wax, window cl eaner or abrasive cleaner.
• Do not touch glass surface with anything hard or sharp.
• Do not use window scraper or deicer.
●Do not attach stickers or apply water repellent coating to the rear quarter glass.
Contact with glue or other agents ma y cause the glass to become cloudy or
blemished.
■Air inlets
■Rear quarter fin (if equipped)
Do not insert foreign objects into the air inlets
as doing so may damage the body or radiator
components. Should an object become
lodged in an air inlet, do not attempt to take it
out. Instead, contact your Lexus dealer.
Do not apply force to the rear quarter fin
such as by pressing on it as doing so may
cause damage.

NOTICE
■When using high pressure car washes
Do not aim the head of the nozzle at the hood
grilles or radiator grilles.
Doing so may negatively affect the engine or
cause a malfunction in the electric cooling fan
motors that may result in overheating.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
If your vehicle overheats
If your engine overheats:
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air conditioning
system.
Check to see if steam is coming out from under the hood.
If you see steam:
Stop the engine. Care fully lift the hood after the steam subsides
and then restart the engine.
If you do not see steam:
Leave the engine running and carefully lift the hood.
Check to see if the cooling fan is
operating.
While being careful of hot air and
exhaust gases, check by looking
through the radiator grilles or by
listening to the operating sound.
If the fan is operating:
Wait until the engine coolant tem-
perature shown on the gauge low-
ers and then stop the engine.
If the fan is not operating:
Stop the engine immediately and
call your local Lexus dealer.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
After the engine has cooled down
sufficiently, check the engine cool-
ant level and inspect the radiator
core (radiator) for any leaks.
Add engine coolant if necessary.
(P. 362)
Water can be used in an emer-
gency if engine coolant is unavail-
able.
Have the vehicle inspected at the ne arest Lexus dealer as soon as possi-
ble.
STEP4
STEP5
■Overheating
If you observe the following, your vehicle may be overheating.
●The engine coolant temperature gauge flashes or a loss of power is experi-
enced.
●Steam comes out from under the hood.

CAUTION
■To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of your vehicle
●If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until the
steam has subsided. The engine compartm ent may be very hot, causing serious
injury such as burns.
●Keep hands and clothing away from the drive belt while the engine is running.
●Do not loosen the coolant reservoir cap while the engine and radiator are hot.
Serious injury, such as burns, may resu lt from hot coolant and steam released
under pressure.
NOTICE
■When adding engine coolant
Wait until the engine has cooled do wn before adding engine coolant.
When adding coolant, do so slowly. Adding cool coolant to a hot engine too quickly
can cause damage to the engine.
