Selecting a driving mode
The following modes can be selected to suit driving condi-
tions:
Normal mode
Eco drive mode
Suitable for improving the
fuel economy, because the
torque corresponding to the
accelerator pedal depression
amount can be generated
more smoothly than it is in
normal conditions and the
operation of the air condi-
tioning system (heating/cool-
ing) will be minimized.
When the driving mode
select switch is turned left,
the “ECO MODE” indicator
comes on in the instrument
cluster.

Sport mode
Use when high levels of
response and feeling are
desirable, such as when driv-

Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode (without navi-
gation system)
Eco drive mode controls the heating/ cooling operations and fan speed of
the air conditioning system to enhance fuel efficiency. (P. 326) To
improve air conditioning performance, adjust the fan speed or turn off Eco
drive mode.
Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode (with navigation
system)
Eco drive mode controls the heating/cooling operations and fan speed of the
air conditioning system to enhance fuel efficiency. To improve air condi-
tioning performance, adjust the fan speed or turn off Eco drive mode. (Refer
to the “Navigation System Owner’s Manual”.)
For the shift positions
When the “POWER” switch is off, the shift position cannot be changed.
When the “POWER” switch is in ON mode (the hybrid system is not
operating), the shift position can only be changed to N. The shift position
will be changed to N even if the shift lever is shifted to D or R and held
in that position.
When the “READY” indicator is on, the shift position can be changed
from P to D, N or R.
When the “READY” indicator is flashing, the shift position cannot be
changed from P to another position even if the shift lever is operated.
Wait until the “READY” indicator changes from a flashing to a solid
light, and then operate the shift lever again.
The shift position can only be changed to B directly from D.

About engine braking
When shift position B is selected, releasing the accelerator pedal will apply
engine braking.
• When the vehicle is driven at high speeds, compared to ordinary gaso-
line-fueled vehicles, the engine braking deceleration is felt less than that
of other vehicles.
• The vehicle can be accelerated even when shift position B is selected.
If the vehicle is driven continuously in the B position, fuel efficiency will
become low. Usually, select the D position.
When driving with cruise control or dynamic radar cruise control activated
Even if switching the driving mode to sport mode with the intent of enabling
engine braking, engine braking will not activate because cruise control or
dynamic radar cruise control will not be canceled.
Automatically P position selection function
When the shift position is in a position other than P, pressing the “POWER”
switch with the vehicle stopped completely will cause the shift position to
change to P automatically, and then the “POWER” switch will turn off.
If the shift position cannot be shifted from P
There is a possibility that the 12-volt battery is discharged. Check the 12-
volt battery in this situation. (P. 633)
Sport mode automatic deactivation
Sport mode is automatically deactivated if the “POWER” switch is turned
off after driving in sport mode.
After recharging/reconnecting the 12-volt battery

Gauges and meters
The following gauges and meters and display illuminate when the
“POWER” switch is in ON mode:
Hybrid System Indicator
Displays hybrid system output or regeneration level
Tachometer (if equipped)
Displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute
Speedometer
Displays the vehicle speed
ECO lamp and SPORT lamp (if equipped)
Changes colors according to driving mode
Fuel gauge
Displays the quantity of fuel remaining in the tank
Multi-information display
Presents the driver with a variety of driving-related data. (P. 229)
Outside temperature
The temperature range that can be displayed is from -40 C (-40 F)
to 50 C (122 F)

Hybrid System Indicator
Hybrid System Indicator is displayed when the driving mode is other
than the sport mode.
By keeping the indicator needle within Eco area, more Eco-friendly driv-
ing can be achieved.
Charge area indicates regeneration* status. Regenerated energy will be
used to charge the battery.
*:When used in this manual, “regeneration” refers to the conversion of
energy created by the movement of the vehicle into electrical energy.
Power area
Shows that an Eco-friendly driving
range is being exceeded (during full
power driving etc.)
Eco area
Shows that the vehicle is being driven
in an Eco-friendly manner.
Hybrid Eco area
Shows that gasoline engine power is
not being used very often.
The gasoline engine will automatically
stop and restart under various condi-
tions.
Charge area
Shows that energy is being recovered

ECO lamp and SPORT lamp (if equipped)
When sport mode is selected, the SPORT lamp (red) will illuminate.
When all of the following conditions are satisfied and the Eco-friendly
driving, the ECO lamp (blue) will illuminate:
• When driving with the shift position in D
• When either normal mode or Eco mode are selected, and EV drive
mode is not in use
• The vehicle speed is 130 km/h (80 mph) or below.
Tachometer (if equipped)
Hybrid System Indicator automatically switches to the tachometer when the
driving mode is set to the sport mode. However, while the cruise control or
dynamic radar cruise control is active, Hybrid System Indicator will not
automatically switch to the tachometer. When the cruise control or dynamic
radar cruise control is activated while the tachometer is displayed, the
tachometer will automatically switch to Hybrid System Indicator.
Engine speed
On hybrid vehicles, engine speed is precisely controlled in order to help
improve fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions etc.
There are times when the engine speed that is displayed may differ even
when vehicle operation and driving conditions are the same.
Outside temperature display
In the following situations, the correct outside temperature may not be dis-
played, or the display may take longer than normal to change.
When stopped, or driving at low speeds (less than 20 km/h [12 mph])
When the outside temperature has changed suddenly (at the entrance/exit
of a garage, tunnel, etc.)

*1: These lights turn on when the “POWER” switch is turned to the
ON mode to indicate that a system check is being performed. They
will turn off after the hybrid system is on, or after a few seconds.
There may be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come
on, or if the lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by
any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional.
