What to do in an emergency
When towing your vehicle in an emer-
gency without wheel dollies :
1. Set the ignition switch in the ACC posi-tion.
2. Place the shift lever in N (Neutral).
3. Release the parking brake.

1. Open the trunk, and remove the tow- ing hook from the tool case.
2. Remove the hole cover pressing the lower part of the cover on the front or
rear bumper. 3. Install the towing hook by turning it
clockwise into the hole until it is fully
secured.
4. Remove the towing hook and install the cover after use.
CAUTION
Failure to place the shift lever in N(Neutral) may cause internal dam-age to the transmission.

What to do in an emergency
Use a towing strap less than 16 feet (5m) long. Attach a white or red cloth
(about 12 inches (30 cm) wide) in the
middle of the strap for easy visibility.
Drive carefully so that the towing strap is not loosened during towing.

Emergency towing precautions
Place the ignition switch in ACC so thesteering wheel isn’t locked.
Place the transmission shift lever in N (Neutral).
Release the parking bake.
Press the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will have
reduced brake performance. More steering effort will be required
because the power steering system
will be disabled.
If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake per-
formance will be reduced. Stop often
and let the brakes cool off.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when towing
the vehicle.

ing cable or chain. The hook and
towing cable or chain may break
and cause serious injury or dam-
age.
If the disabled vehicle can not be moved, do not forcibly continue
the towing. Contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer or a commercial
tow truck service for assistance.
Tow the vehicle as straight ahead as possible.
Keep away from the vehicle dur- ing towing.

CAUTION - Automatictransmission
If the car is being towed with all
four wheels on the ground, it canbe towed only from the front. Be sure that the transmission is inneutral. Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the ignitionswitch in the ACC position. A driver must be in the towed vehi-cle to operate the steering andbrakes.
To avoid serious damage to the automatic transmission, limit thevehicle speed to 10 mph anddrive less than 1 mile when
towing.
Before towing, check the level of the automatic transmission fluid.If it is below the "HOT" range onthe dipstick, add fluid. If you can- not add fluid, a towing dolly mustbe used.

Changing the engine oil and filter
Have engine oil and filter changed by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer according to
the Maintenance Schedule at the begin-
ning of this section.

The high-pressure cooling system has a
reservoir filled with year-round antifreeze
coolant. The reservoir is filled at the factory.
Check the antifreeze protection and
coolant level at least once a year, at the
beginning of the winter season, and
before traveling to a colder climate.

Engine oil contains chemicals

cause cancer, birth defects and
reproductive harm. Used engine oil
may cause irritation or cancer of
the skin if left in contact with the
skin for prolonged periods of time.
Always protect your skin by wash-
ing your hands thoroughly with
soap and warm water as soon as
possible after handling used oil.
ENGINE COOLANT

Turn the engine off and wait until it
cools down. Use extreme care
when removing the radiator cap.
Wrap a thick towel around it, and
turn it counterclockwise slowly to
the first stop. Step back while the
pressure is released from the cool-
ing system. When you are sure all
the pressure has been released,
press down on the cap, using a
thick towel, and continue turning
counterclockwise to remove it.
Even if the engine is not operat- ing, do not remove the radiator
cap or the drain plug while the
engine and radiator are hot. Hot
coolant and steam may still blow
out under pressure, causing seri-
ous injury.
WARNING

Never attempt to remove the radi-ator cap while the engine is oper-
ating or hot. Doing so might lead
to cooling system and engine
damage and could result in seri-
ous personal injury from escap-
ing hot coolant or steam.

Filter replacement
It must be replaced when necessary, and
should not be washed and reused.
You can clean the filter when inspecting
the air cleaner element.
Clean the filter by using compressed air. 1. Loosen the air cleaner cover attaching
clips and open the cover. 2. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner.
3. Replace the air cleaner filter.
4. Lock the cover with the cover attaching
clips.
Replace the filter according to the
Maintenance Schedule.
If the vehicle is operated in extremely dusty or sandy areas, replace the element more often than the usual recommended intervals. (Refer to “Maintenance under severe usage condi-tions” in this section.)

1. Raise the wiper arm and turn the wiper
blade assembly to expose the plastic
locking clip.
2. Compress the clip and slide the bladeassembly downward.
3. Lift it off the arm.
4. Install the blade assembly in the reverse order of removal. Type B

Use genuine HYUNDAI batteries, available at HYUNDAI dealers,when you replace the battery.
WARNING- Recharging battery
When recharging the battery,
observe the following precautions:
The battery must be removed
from the vehicle and placed in an
area with good ventilation.
Do not allow cigarettes, sparks, or flame near the battery.
Watch the battery during charg- ing, and stop or reduce the charg-
ing rate if the battery cells begin
gassing (boiling) violently or if
the temperature of the electrolyte
of any cell exceeds 49°C (120°F).
Wear eye protection when check- ing the battery during charging.
Disconnect the battery charger in the following order.
1. Turn off the battery charger main switch.
2. Unhook the negative clamp from the negative battery terminal.
3. Unhook the positive clamp from the positive battery terminal.

Compact spare tire replacement (if
equipped)
A compact spare tire has a shorter
tread life than a regular size tire.
Replace it when you can see the
tread wear indicator bars on the tire.
The replacement compact spare tire
should be the same size and design
tire as the one provided with your
new vehicle and should be mounted
on the same compact spare tire
wheel. The compact spare tire is not
designed to be mounted on a regular
size wheel, and the compact spare
tire wheel is not designed for mount-
ing a regular size tire.

Wheel replacement
When replacing the metal wheels for
any reason, make sure the new
wheels are equivalent to the original
factory units in diameter, rim width
and offset.
✽ ✽ NOTICE
The front tire size is different from
the rear tire size. So when you rotate
tires, check the tire and wheel size.

than the recommended sizes
could cause unusual handling
characteristics and poor vehi-
cle control, resulting in a seri-
ous accident.
Wheels that do not meet HYUNDAI’s specifications
may fit poorly and result in
damage to the vehicle or
unusual handling and poor
vehicle control.
The ABS works by comparing the speed of the wheels. Tire
size can affect wheel speed.
When replacing tires, all 4
tires must use the size origi-
nally supplied with the vehi-
cle. Using tires of a different
size can cause the ABS (Anti-
lock Brake System) and ESC
(Electronic Stability Control)
to work irregularly.
WARNING
A wheel that is not the correct
size may adversely affect wheel
and bearing life, braking and
stopping abilities, handling
characteristics, ground clear-
ance, body-to-tire clearance,
snow chain clearance,
speedometer and odometer cal-
ibration, headlight aim and
bumper height.
