When the ve hicle is
locked , the cur rent set­
tings are stored and ass igned to the remo te
control key. Bu t th e set tings stored on memo ­
ry buttons 1 and 2 are not deleted. They can
be reca lled at any time . When the vehicle is
unlocked , the settings assigned to the remote
control key are restored.
If you r vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save yo ur
individua l seat position on one of the memory
buttons. You can reca ll your settings aga in
simply and conve niently by pressing the corre­
spond ing memory butto n. When the vehicle is
l oc ked, these setti ngs are automatically re-as­
signed to t he remote control key and stored.

General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety pre cautions.
All passengers on the rear seats mus t be seat­
ed in comp lian ce with the safety guide lines

A WARNING
--Occupants in the f ront and rear seats
m ust always be proper ly restrained.
- Do not let anyone ride in the ve hicle
witho ut the head restraints prov ided.
Head restraints help to reduce injuries .
- Loose items inside the passenge r com­
pa rtment, can fly forward in a crash or
sudden maneuve r and injure occupants.
Always store a rticles i n the luggage com­
pa rtment an d use the fastening eyes, es­
pecially w he n the rea r seatbac ks hav e
been fo lded down.

Rear air distribution ~
Applies to vehicles: with four-zone automatic comfort air
conditioning
The automatically controlled air distribution
con be changed manually.

.. Rotate the regu lator to the desired setting .
You can adj ust the air circulation so that air
flows from specific vents .

:J, all air flows from the vents in
the center console and the outlets to the
door pilla rs.

:0, air flows from the outlets in

der the front seats.
There are additional combinations available to

General
The basic climate control settings con be ad­

Automatic recirculation mode
An air quality sensor detects increased con­
centrations of pollutants in the outside air
and automatically switches to recirculation
mode .
We recommend that you always keep auto ­
matic a ir recirculation ON to p revent polluted
outside air from enteri ng the veh icle inter ior.
If the
a ir qu ality sensor l ocated in the air con­
ditioning system detects polluted outs ide a ir,
the sensor dec ides whether the air pollut ion
can be reduced by the facto ry-installed pollu­
ta nt fi lter or whethe r it is necessary to switc h
to air recirc ulation. With heavy conce ntra ti ons
of pollu tants, the a ir condit ion ing system is
switched automatica lly to recirc ulation mode
and the supp ly of outside air is blocked . As
soon as the concentration of pollutants in the
outside air drops, fresh air is supplied to the
vehicle interior aga in.
In the event that the windows fog up during
automat ic air rec irculat ion, you must press
the® button immediately.
Under certa in ope rating cond itions, a utomatic
air recirculation is switched off automatica lly.
With outside temperatures be low about 50 °F
(+10 °C), automatic air rec irculat ion is limited
to 30 seconds. W it h outside temperatures be­
low about 30 °F ( -1 °C) a nd with the air condi­
tione r switched off, the a utomatic air recircu­
l ation is limited to 15 seconds.
Synchronization
One climate control setting for the driver and
front passenger seats .
With synchro nization active, the driver's set­
tings a re adopted for the passenger o r vice
versa . All the othe r setti ngs that were made
are t ransferred to t he other seat . This in­
cl udes all the cl ima te co ntro l settings, excep t
for the se at heating/ven tilat ion* .
If a different setting is selected at a
"synchron ized seat ", synchronization is can­
c e lled.

Ignition lock and ignition switch
Ignition key positions
The engine con be started or turned off with
the ignition key.

The ignition key can be inserted into the igni ­
tion switch in this position . This automatically
unlocks the steering column lock . When the
ignition key is removed, the steering column
lock is automatically locked

Switching the ignition on/preheating (D
Turn the ignition key to this position and re­
lease it. On vehicles with a d iesel engine*, the
system can preheat in this position .
Starting the engine@
The engine starts with the key in this position.
Major electrical loads are temporarily turned
off.
Ignition off@
Turn the ignition key to this position and re­
lease it.
A WARNING ,~ ~
- Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock, causing loss of
control.
- If you have to leave your vehicle, even for
just a minute, always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is especially
important if you are going to leave chil-

dren unattended in the vehicle. The chil­
dren could start the engine or use other
vehicle controls. Unsupervised use of ve­
hicle controls (for example, power win­
dows) can cause ser ious personal inju­
ries.

-If you release the ignition key in position
@, the key automatically returns to posi­
tion (!).
- If you open the driver's door when the ig­
nition is sw itched on, a buzzer sounds
and the message
Ignition is on appears
in the instrument cluster display. Please
switch the ignition off.
- T o prevent malfunctions in the ign ition
lock, remove any dirt or deposits from
the key bit so that they do not enter the
ignition lock.
Ignition key safety lock
The ignition key con only be removed when
the selector lever is in the "P" (Pork) position.
After turning off the ignition, the ignition key
can only be removed from the ignition lock
when the selector lever is in the "P" (Park) po­
sition. After you have removed the key, these­ lector lever is locked and cannot be moved.

-Never turn off the engine until the vehi-
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and servotronic only
work when the engine is running. With
the ignition turned off, you have to apply mo re force when steeri ng or brak ing.
Since you cannot steer and stop normal­
ly, t his can lead to acc idents and se rious
. . . in Juries.
- For safety reasons, you sho uld a lways
pa rk your vehi cle wit h the selector lever
i n P. O therwise, the vehicle could inad­
ver ten tly roll aw ay.
- Afte r the eng ine has been switch ed off,
t he r adi at or f an can co ntinu e to run f or
up to 10 minu tes -even with the igni tion
switched off . It can also switch on again
after some t ime if the coolant tem pera ­
ture rises as the resu lt of a heat b uildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compa rtment is additionally heated by
the sun's rays.

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended pe rio d, heat b uilds up in
the engine compartment after the engi ne
i s sw itched off -there is a r isk of damag ing

Driver messages in the instrument

If a func tion is not present, a driver message
appears .
No key identified
This message appears when t he I STAR T I but-
ton is pr essed if there is no master key ins id e
the vehi cle or if t he system does not recogn ize
IJ,-

it. For example, the master key cannot be rec­
ognized if it is covered by an object (e.g. alu­
minum brief case) which
screens the radio s ig­
nal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the I START !
button to start the engine and do not depress
the brake pedal. The engine can only be start­
ed if the brake pedal is depressed .
Engage Nor P to start engine
This message appears when the engine is
started if the selector lever for the automatic
transmission is not in the P or N position. The
engine can only be started with the selector in
these posit ions.
!I Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the !! sym­
bol if the master key is removed from the ve­
hicle w ith the engine running .
It is intended
to remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignition after stop­ ping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the
veh icle from the outside with the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if you are not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
along w ith a warning buzzer if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in
the P pos ition when the ignit ion is switched
off with the
ISTOPI button and the dr iver's
door is opened. Move the se lector lever to the
P position, otherwise the vehicle is not se ­
cured against rolling away. You a lso cannot
lock the vehicle using the lock ing button on
the door hand le or using the remote key.

To engage steering lock, press and hold
STOP button
This message appears for safety reasons if the
engine and the ignition have been switched
off by pressing the
I STOPI button once, and
then the driver's door is opened. In this in­
stance, the steering is not locked . The steer ­
ing is locked:
- If you press the
IS TOPI button again for
more than 1 second.
- If you close the driver's door and lock your
veh icle from the outside.
Parking brake
Operation
The parking brake replaces the handbrake .

ter you have dr iven for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h) . .,._

(CON) illuminates when the parking brake is
set and you switch on the ignition.
_& WARNING

Always release the parking brake com­
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce their ef­
fectiveness and cause excessive wear. This could lead to brake failure and an accident .

Only after the vehicle has come to com­ plete stop, should you firmly set the park­
ing brake and move the selector lever into
"P".
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling
away, there are a few things you should do .
When you park your vehicle, do the
following
• Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
• Apply the parking brake firmly .
• Move the selector lever into the
P position
~ &.
• Switch off the engine and remove the igni-
tion key from the ignition lock.
When you park your vehicle on hills, do
the following
• Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
• Apply the parking brake firmly.
• If you are parking headed downhill, turn
the front wheels
toward the curb.
• If you are parking headed uphill, turn the
front wheels
away from the curb.
• Move the selector lever into the
P position.
• Switch off the engine and remove the igni­
tion key from the ignition lock.
_& WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your vehicle. -
Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with dry grass, spilled fuel or
any other flammable materials.
- When parking on hills, always turn the
wheels so that the front wheels will first
roll into the curb, if the vehicle should
start to roll.
- Never allow anyone - especially small
children - to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
- Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle. Children could release the park­
ing brake or move the gearshift lever out
of gear. The vehicle could start to roll
away and cause an accident.
- No matter what the season is, the tem­
perature in a parked vehicle can reach
dangerous levels.
@ Note
-Please exercise care when you park your
vehicle in parking areas with parking bar­
riers or curbs. Parking barriers and curbs
vary in height and could damage your
bumper and related components as the
front of your vehicle moves over a barrier or curb that is too high, as you park or as
you back out of a parking spot. In order to be sure that no such damage can oc­
cur, you may wish to stop short of having
the front tires of your car touch the park­
ing barrier or curb.
- Please also exercise exceptional care
when you drive up or down steep ramps
or drive over curbs or other obstacles, for
which the vehicle is not designed, be­
cause components of the vehicle close to
the ground, such as bumper covers, spoilers and suspension and exhaust sys­
tem components, may become dam­ aged.

Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be prop­ erly stowed and secured in the luggage com ­
partment.

shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling
characterist ics . Loose items can also increase
the r isk of serious personal injury in a sudden
vehicle maneuver or in a collision .

-Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the cen­
ter of gravity can also cause changes in
veh icle handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as

- Place heavy objects as far forward in
the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle We ight Rat­
ing or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
specif ied on the safety compliance stick­
er on the left door jamb. Exceed ing per­
miss ible weight standards can cause the
veh icle to slide and handle differen tly.
- Please observe information on safe dr iv­
ing

A WARNING

To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, a lways
keep the rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those fitting comp letely into the luggage
area because the rear lid cannot be ful ly
closed.
- If you absolutely m ust dr ive wi th the rear
lid open, observe the following notes to
red uce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the Panoramic sliding sunroof *,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pane l,
- Switc h off the air recirculat ion,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest
speed.
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows, the Panoramic sliding sunroof * and
the rear lid are securely closed and locked

-a car bed has been insta lled on the front
seat, or
- a rearward-facing chi ld restraint has been
installed on the front passenger seat, or
- a forward -facing child restraint has been in­
sta lled on the front passenge r seat, or
- the weight registered on the front passen­
ger seat is equa l to or less than the com­
bined weight of a typical 1 year -old restrain­
ed in one of the rear-fac ing or forward-fac­
ing infant restraints listed in Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standard 208 w ith which the
Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle was
certified.
If the front passenger seat is not occupied,
the front airbag will not deploy, and the

light w ill stay on. Nev­
er install a rearward -fac ing ch ild restra int on
the front passenger seat, the safest place for
a child in any ki nd of child restraint is at one
of the seating positions on the rear seat

If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light c om es

when one of the conditions listed above is
met, be sure to check the light regularly to
make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OF F
light stays on continuous ly whenever the
ignition is on. If the
PA SSE NGER AIR BAG
OFF
light does not appear on and does not
stay on all the time, stop as soon as it is safe
to do so and
- react ivate the system by turning the ignition
off and then turning it on again;
- remove and reinstall the chi ld restraint .
Make sure that the child restraint is properly
installed and that the safety belt for the
front passenger seat has been correctly routed throug h the child restraint as descri­
bed in the chi ld restraint manufactu rer's in­
structions;
- make sure that the convertible locking fea­
tu re on the safety be lt fo r the front passen­
ger seat has been activated and that the sa fety belt has been pulled tight. The bel t

that the sensor below the sa fety be lt latch
on the seat can do its job

- make sure that things that may increase the
weight of the child and chi ld safety seat are
not being transported on the front passen­
ger seat;
- make sure t hat the safety belt tension sen­
sor is not blocked. Shake the safety belt
latch on the front passenger seatback and
forth;
- If a strap or tether is be ing used to tie the
child safety seat to the front passenger
seat, make sure that it is not so tight that it
causes the weight -se nsing mat to measure
more weight than is actually on the seat .
If the P ASS ENGER AIR B AG OFF light still
do es not come on
and does not stay on con­
tinuously (whe n the ignition is switched on),
- take the child restraint off the front passen-
ger seat and install it properly at one of the
rear seat positions. Have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Aud i dealer
immed iate ly.
- move the child to a rear seat position and
make sure t hat the ch ild is properly restra in­
ed in a ch ild restra int that is appropriate for
its size and age.
The
PAS SENG ER A IR BAG OFF light should
NOT come on when the ignit ion is on and an
adult is s itting in a proper seating position on
t h e front passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on o r
flashes fo r about 5 seconds wh ile d riving, un ­
der these c ircumstances, make sure that :
- the adult on t he front passenge r seat is
prope rly seated on the cente r of the seat
cushion with his o r he r back up ag ainst the
backrest and the backrest is not reclined
