Starting the engine

Start
Ignition switch with remote key inserted ( see
page 81 for more information on ignition modes)
WARNING
Before starting the engine:
•Fasten the seat belt.
•Check that the seat, steering wheel and
mirrors are adjusted properly.
•Make sure the brake pedal can be
depressed completely. Adjust the seat
if necessary.
1. Press the remote key into the ignition slot
as far as possible, with the metallic key
blade pointing outward (not inserted into
the slot)

Depress the brake pedal

Press and release the START/STOP
ENGINE button. The autostart function will
operate the starter motor until the engine
starts.
The starter motor operates for a maximum
of 10 seconds. If the engine has not
started, repeat the procedure.
NOTE
Keyless drive*
To start a vehicle equipped with the keyless
drive feature, one of the remote keys must
be in the passenger compartment. Follow
the instructions in step 3 to start the vehicle.
WARNING
An extra mat on the driver's floor can cause
the accelerator and/or brake pedal to catch.
Check that the movement of these pedals is
not impeded. Not more than one protective
floor covering may be used at one time.
WARNING
•Always remove the remote key from the
ignition slot when leaving the vehicle,
especially if there are children in the
vehicle.
•Never remove the remote key from the
ignition slot while driving or when the
vehicle is being towed. The steering
lock could otherwise be activated, mak-
ing it impossible to steer the vehicle. On
vehicles with the optional keyless drive,
never remove the remote key from the
vehicle while driving or during towing.
•Always place the gear selector in Park
and apply the parking brake before
leaving the vehicle. Never leave the
vehicle unattended with the engine run-
ning.
•Always open garage doors fully before
starting the engine inside a garage to
ensure adequate ventilation. The
exhaust gases contain carbon monox-
ide, which is invisible and odorless but
very poisonous.

Please be aware that overriding the shiftlock
system does not release the steering wheel
lock.
All Wheel Drive – AWD3
Your Volvo can be equipped with permanent
All Wheel Drive, which means that power is
distributed automatically between the front
and rear wheels. Under normal driving condi-
tions, most of the engine's power is directed to
the front wheels. However, if there is any ten-
dency for the front wheels to spin, an electron-
ically controlled coupling distributes power to
the wheels that have the best traction.
NOTE
The message AWD disabled Service
required will be appear in the information
display if an electrical fault should occur in
the AWD system. A warning light will also
illuminate in the instrument panel. If this
occurs, have the system checked by a
trained and qualified Volvo service techni-
cian.

Introduction
The MY CAR feature provides access to
menus for controlling many of the vehicle's
functions.
Navigating among the menu selections is done
with several buttons in the center console or on
the steering wheel keypad.
Since it must be possible to control some of
these functions while driving, they have their
own direct buttons in the center console con-
trol panel. A maximum of 20 buttons are avail-
able.
Operation

Press MY CAR to access the My Car
menu.
Press OK/MENU to select a highlighted
selection or to store a certain function in
the system's memory.
Turn to navigate up/down among menu
selections.
Press EXIT briefly to go back one step in
the menu structure. A long press exits the
current menu system and returns you to
the main menu.
Steering wheel keypad
The keypad varies according to the vehicle's
equipment
Turn the thumb wheel to go up/down
among menu selections. Press the thumb
wheel to make a selection or store a func-
tion in the system's memory.
Press EXIT briefly to go back one step in
the menu structure. A long press exits the
current menu system and returns you to
the main menu.

The following is an example of a function that
can be found and set using the steering wheel
keypad:
1.
Press the MY CAR button.
2. Navigate to a menu, for example
Settings using the thumb wheel (1) and
press it to open a submenu.
3. Navigate to the desired submenu such as
Car settings.

Navigate to
Lock settings and press the
thumb wheel to open another submenu.
5.
Navigate to
Doors unlock and press the
thumb wheel to open a submenu with alter-
natives that can be selected.
6. Use the thumb wheel to move to the
desired choice and press the thumb wheel
to put an X in the box.
7. Finish by exiting the menu system either
one step at a time with short presses on
EXIT (2) or hold down this button to exit the
menu system completely.
The OK/MENU (2), EXIT (4) and control (3) in
the center console can be used in the same
way.

Main menuThe vehicle's functions are displayed in the
main menu as 6 symbols (1) that lead to sub-
menus where various settings can be made. A
long press on EXIT displays the main menu.

Introduction
The Dynamic Stability and Traction Control
system (DSTC) consists of a number of func-
tions designed help reduce wheel spin, coun-
teract skidding, and to generally help improve
directional stability.
CAUTION
A pulsating sound will be audible when the
system is actively operating and is normal.
Traction control (TC)This function is designed to help reduce wheel
spin by transferring power from a drive wheel
that begins to lose traction to the wheel on the
opposite side of the vehicle (on the same axle).
TC is most active at low speeds.
This is one of DSTC's permanent functions and
cannot be switched off.
Active Yaw Control (AYC)This function helps maintain directional stabil-
ity, for example when cornering, by braking
one or more of the wheels if the vehicle shows
a tendency to skid or slide laterally.
This is one of DSTC's permanent functions and
cannot be switched off.
Spin control (SC)The spin control function is designed to help
prevent the drive wheels from spinning while
the vehicle is accelerating.
Corner Traction Control – CTCCTC compensates for understeering and helps
provide additional stability when accelerating
through a curve by preventing the inside wheel
from spinning. This is particularly useful when
accelerating on a curving highway on-ramp.
CTC is most effective if the stability sys-
tem'sSport mode is selected. See the follow-
ing section about Sport mode.
Engine Drag Control (EDC)EDC helps keep the engine running if the
wheels show a tendency to lock, e.g., when
shifting down in the Geartronic manual shifting
mode or while using the engine's braking func-
tion on a slippery surface. If the engine were to
stop, power steering would not function, mak-
ing the vehicle more difficult to steer.
Trailer Stability Assist – TSA*Trailer Stability Assist helps stabilize a vehicle
that is towing a trailer when the vehicle and
trailer have begun to sway. See page 251 for
more information.
This system is automatically deactivated if the
driver selects Sport mode.
Operation
Sport modeThe stability system is always activated and
cannot be switched off.
However, the driver can select Sport mode,
which offers more active driving characteris-
tics. In this mode, the engine management sys-
tem monitors movement of the accelerator
pedal and steering wheel for sportier driving by
allowing more lateral movement of the rear
wheels before DSTC is activated.
Under certain circumstances, such as when
driving with snow chains, or driving in deep
snow or loose sand, it may be advisable to
temporarily use Sport mode for maximum
tractive force.
If the driver releases pressure on the acceler-
ator pedal, DSTC will also activate to help sta-
bilize the vehicle.
To switch to Sport mode:
1.
Press the My Car button in the center con-
sole control panel and select My S60
DSTC in the menu.
2.
Unselect the symbol by pressing OK/
MENU and press EXIT to leave the menu.

This puts DSTC in Sport mode.
Sport mode remains active until the driver
switches it off in the menu or until the engine is

Active chassis (Four C)
Active chassis, Four-C (Continuously Con-
trolled Chassis Concept), regulates the cha-
racteristics of the shock absorbers so that the
car's driving characteristics can be adjusted.
There are three settings: Comfort, Sport and
Advanced.
ComfortComfort mode offers a somewhat softer ride
and the transmission shifts gears at lower rpm.
This mode is particularly suitable for long-dis-
tance highway driving. The indicator light in the
button will be on when this mode is selected.
SportIn this mode, the vehicle's body sway is
reduced during cornering and steering
response is more immediate. The transmission
shifts up at higher rpm for sportier driving. The
indicator light in the button will be on to indi-
cate that Sport mode has been selected.
AdvancedIn this mode, body sway in curves is minimal
and steering response is very direct. Gear shift-
ing is done at high rpm in each gear for
dynamic and active driving.
Operation
Chassis settings
Use the buttons in the center console to
change setting. The setting in use when the
engine is switched off is activated the next time
the engine is started.
Speed-dependent steering force*
Steering force increases with the speed of the
vehicle to give the driver enhanced sensitivity.
At low speed the vehicle is easy to steer in
order to facilitate parking, etc.

NOTE
This steering force level menu function can-
not be accessed when the vehicle is in
motion.

Setting a speed
Use the or buttons set the vehicle's cur-
rent speed. The set speed is shown in the dis-
play.
NOTE
Cruise control cannot be engaged at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h).
Adjusting the set speedAfter a speed has been set, it can be increased
or decreased by using the
or buttons.

Press and hold down
or until the
vehicle reaches the desired speed.
> This will become the set speed when the
button is released.
2.
Press
or for approximately a half
second and release the button to increase
or decrease vehicle speed by approxi-
mately 1 mph (1.6 km/h).
NOTE
•A temporary increase in speed by
pressing the accelerator pedal, for less
than 1 minute (e.g. when passing
another car), does not affect the current
cruise control setting. The vehicle will
automatically return to the previously
set speed when the accelerator pedal is
released.
•If one of the cruise control buttons is
kept depressed for more than approx.
1 minute cruise control is disengaged.
The engine must then be switched off in
order to reset cruise control.
Automatic deactivationCruise control is automatically deactivated
temporarily if one of the following occurs:
•If the speed drops below approximately
20 mph (30 km/h).
•When the brake pedal is depressed.
•If the gear selector is moved to position N.
•During wheel spin or wheel lock-up.
•If the vehicle's speed is increased by using
the accelerator pedal for more than
1 minute.
The currently set speed will be saved in the
system's memory.
