Before driving
CAUTION
■
Caution while parking
If the open back door hides the stop, tail or rear turn signal lights, other road
users must be warned of the presence of your vehicle by a warning triangle
or other device.
■ When children are in the vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
●Do not leave children alone in the luggage compartment.
If a child is accidentally locked in the luggage compartment, they could
have heat exhaustion.
● Do not allow a child to open or close the back door.
Doing so may cause the back door to operate unexpectedly, or cause the
child’s hands, head, or neck to be caught by the closing back door.
■ Operating the back door
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resulting in seri-
ous injury.
●When opening or closing the back door, thoroughly check to make sure
the surrounding area is safe.
● If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let them know that
the back door is about to open or close.

CAUTION
●Use caution when opening or closing the back door in windy weather as it
may move abruptly in strong wind.
● Do not attach any accessories other than genuine Toyota parts to the back
door. Such additional weight on the back door may interfere with the safety
opening and closing operation of the back door.
● If the open back door hides the stop, tail, rear side marker or rear turn sig-
nal lights while you are parked, other road users must be warned of the
presence of your vehicle by a warning triangle or other device.
●The back door may close if it is not
opened fully. It is more difficult to open
or close the back door on an incline
than on a level surface, so beware of
the back door unexpectedly opening or
closing by itself. Make sure that the
back door is fully open and secure
before using the luggage compartment.
● When closing the back door, take extra
care to prevent your fingers etc. from
being caught.
● When closing the back door, make sure
to press it lightly on its outer surface.

Glare from the headlights of vehicles behind can be reduced by
using the following functions.

Airbag system components
Your vehicle is equipped with ADVANCED AIRBAGS designed based
on US motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS208). The airbag sys-
tem controls airbag deployment po wer for the driver and front pas-
senger. The driver airbag system cons ists of the driver seat's position
sensor etc. The front passenger's ai rbag system consists of the front

The main SRS airbag system components are shown above. The
SRS airbag system is controlled by the airbag sensor assembly. The
airbag sensor assembly consists of a safing sensor and an airbag
sensor.
In certain types of severe frontal or side impacts, the SRS airbag sys-
tem triggers the airbag inflators. A chemical reaction in the inflators
quickly fills the airbags with non-toxic gas to help restrain the motion
of the occupants.
■ SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag
sensors, side and curtain shield airbag sensors, curtain shield airbag sen-
sors, driver's seat position sensor, driver's seat belt buckle switch, front pas-
senger occupant classification system, “AIR BAG ON” and “AIR BAG OFF”
indicator lights, front passenger’s seat belt buckle switch, seat belt preten-
sioner assemblies, inflators, interconnecting wiring and power sources. ( P.
427)
■ If the SRS airbags deploy (inflate)
●Bruising and slight abrasions may result from contact with a deploying
(inflating) SRS airbag.
● A loud noise and white powder will be emitted.
● Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel hub, airbag cover and inflator)
as well as the front seats, and parts of the front and rear pillars and roof
side rail, may be hot for several minutes. The airbag itself may also be
hot.
● The windshield may crack.
