INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA205
CAUTION
If the electric power steering system
warning light comes on, take your ve-
hicle to any authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional, as soon
as possible. In this case, more effort
is required for the steering wheel to
turn than usual. Drive your vehicle
while firmly gripping the steering
wheel.
Luggage stowage precautions
When stowing cargo and luggage in the
vehicle, observe the following:
DPut cargo and luggage in the luggage
compartment when at all possible. Be
sure all items are secured in place.
DBe careful to keep the vehicle bal-
anced. Locating the weight as far for-
ward as possible helps maintain bal-
ance.
DFor better fuel economy, do not carry
unnecessary weight.
CAUTION
DTo prevent cargo and luggage from
sliding forward during braking, do
not stack anything in the luggage
compartment higher than the seat-
backs. Keep cargo and luggage low,
as close to the floor as possible.
DNever allow anyone to ride in the
luggage compartment. It is not de-
signed for passengers. They should
ride in their seats with their seat
belts properly fastened. Otherwise,
they are much more likely to suffer
death or serious bodily injury, in
the event of sudden braking or a
collision.
DDo not place anything on the lug-
gage cover behind the rear seat-
back. Such items may be thrown
about and possibly injure people in
the vehicle during sudden braking
or an accident.
DDo not drive with objects left on
top of the instrument panel. They
may interfere with the driver’s field
of view. Or they may move during
sharp vehicle acceleration or turn-
ing, and impair the driver ’s control
of the vehicle. In an accident they
may injure the vehicle occupants.

216STARTING AND DRIVING
Trailer towing
MS31001
Toyota does not recommend towing a
trailer with your Toyota. It is not de-
signed for trailer towing.Improving fuel economy is easy—just take
it easy. It will help make your vehicle last
longer, too. Here are some specific tips
on how to save money on both fuel and
repairs:
DKeep your tires inflated at the cor-
rect pressure.Underinflation causes
tire wear and wastes fuel. See page
269 in Section 7−2 for instructions.
DDo not carry unnecessary weight in
your vehicle.Excess weight puts a
heavier load on the engine, causing
greater fuel consumption.
DAvoid lengthy warm−up idling.Once
the engine is running smoothly, begin
driving—but gently. Remember, howev-
er, that on cold winter days this may
take a little longer.
DAccelerate slowly and smoothly.
Avoid jackrabbit starts. Get into high
gear as quickly as possible.
DAvoid long engine idling. If you have
a long wait and you are not in traffic,
it is better to turn off the engine and
start again later.
DAvoid engine lugging or over−rev-
ving.Use a gear position suitable for
the road on which you are travelling.
DAvoid continuous speeding up and
slowing down.Stop−and−go driving
wastes fuel.
DAvoid unnecessary stopping and
braking.Maintain a steady pace. Try
to time the traffic signals so you only
need to stop as little as possible or
take advantage of through streets to
avoid traffic lights. Keep a proper dis-
tance from other vehicles to avoid sud-
den braking. This will also reduce wear
on your brakes.
DAvoid heavy traffic or traffic jams
whenever possible.
DDo not rest your foot on the clutch
or brake pedal.This causes premature
wear, overheating and poor fuel econo-
my.

your vehicle last longer
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY221
If the engine will not start, your engine
may be flooded because of repeated
cranking.
If this happens, turn the engine switch to
“START” with the accelerator pedal fully
depressed. Keep the key and accelerator
pedal in these positions for 15 seconds
and release them. Then try starting the
engine with your foot off the accelerator
pedal.
If the engine does not start after 15 se-
conds of cranking, release the key, wait
a few minutes and try again.
If the engine still will not start, it needs
adjustment or repair. Call any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, for
assistance.
NOTICE
Do not crank for more than 30 se-
conds at a time. This may overheat
the starter and wiring systems.
(c) Jump starting
To avoid serious personal injury and
damage to your vehicle which might re-
sult from a battery explosion, acid
burns, electrical burns, or damaged
electronic components, these instruc-
tions must be followed precisely.
Vehicles with multi−mode manual transmis-
sion—The engine cannot be started by
push−starting.
If you are unsure about how to follow this
procedure, we strongly recommend that
you seek the help of a competent me-
chanic or towing service.
CAUTION
DBatteries contain sulfuric acid
which is poisonous and corrosive.
Wear protective safety glasses when
jump starting, and avoid spilling
acid on your skin, clothing, or ve-
hicle.
DIf you should accidentally get acid
on yourself or in your eyes, remove
any contaminated clothing and flush
the affected area with water imme-
diately. Then get immediate medical
attention. If possible, continue to
apply water with a sponge or cloth
while en route to the medical office.
DThe gas normally produced by a
battery will explode if a flame or
spark is brought near. Use only
standardized jumper cables and do
not smoke or light a match while
jump starting.
NOTICE
The battery used for boosting must
be12 V. Do not jump start unless you
are sure that the booster battery is
correct.

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY235
—After changing wheels
11. Check the air pressure of the re-
placed tire.
Adjust the air pressure to the specifica-
tions designated on page 299 in Section
8. If the pressure is lower, drive slowly to
the nearest service station and fill to the
correct pressure.
Do not forget to reinstall the tire valve
cap as dirt and moisture could get into
the valve core and possibly cause air
leakage. If the cap is missing, have a new
one put on as soon as possible.
12. Restow all the tools, jack and flat
tire securely.
As soon as possible after changing
wheels, tighten the wheel bolts to the
torque specified on page 299 in Section
8 with a torque wrench. Have a technician
repair the flat tire and replace the spare
tire with it.
CAUTION
Before driving, make sure all the
tools, jack and flat tire are securely
placed in their storage locations to
reduce the possibility of death or se-
rious injury during sudden braking,
sudden swerving or an accident.
PS41515
Aluminium wheels:
Before stowing the flat tire, remove the
center wheel ornament by pushing from
the reverse side.
Be careful not to lose the wheel ornament.

236IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY
If your vehicle becomes stuck in snow,
mud, sand, etc., then you may attempt
to rock the vehicle free by moving it
forward and backward.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to rock the vehicle
free by moving it forward and back-
ward if people or objects are any-
where near the vehicle. During the
rocking operation the vehicle may
suddenly move forward or backward
as it becomes unstuck, causing injury
or damage to nearby people or ob-
jects.
NOTICE
If you rock your vehicle, observe the
following precautions to prevent dam-
age to the transmission and other
parts.
zDo not race the engine and avoid
spinning the wheels.
zIf your vehicle remains stuck after
rocking the vehicle several times,
consider other ways such as tow-
ing.

If towing is necessary, we recommend
you have it done by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or qualified
professional, such as a commercial tow
truck service. In consultation with them,
have your vehicle towed using either (a)
or (b).
Only when you cannot receive a towing
service from any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or qualified profes-
sional, such as a commercial tow truck
service, tow your vehicle carefully in
accordance with the instructions given
in “—Emergency towing” on page 238

towed—
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY237
Proper equipment will help ensure that
your vehicle is not damaged while being
towed. Commercial operators are generally
aware of the state/provincial and local
laws pertaining to towing.
Your vehicle could be damaged if it is
towed incorrectly. Although most operators
know the correct procedure, it is possible
to make a mistake. To avoid damage to
your vehicle, make sure the following pre-
cautions are observed. If necessary, show
this page to the tow truck driver.
TOWING PRECAUTIONS:
Use a safety chain system for all towing,
and abide by the state/provincial and local
laws. The wheels and axle on the ground
must be in good condition. If they are
damaged, use a towing dolly.
(a) Towing with wheel lift type truck
From front—Release the parking brake.
NOTICE
When lifting wheels, take care to en-
sure adequate ground clearance for
towing at the opposite end of the
raised vehicle. Otherwise, the bumper
and/or underbody of the towed vehicle
may be damaged during towing.
From rear—
DManual transmission:
We recommend using a towing dolly
under the front wheels. If you do not
use a towing dolly, place the engine
switch in the “ACC” position and put
the transmission in neutral.
DMulti−mode manual transmission:
We recommend using a towing dolly.
The towing dolly is set up under the
front wheels. If you do not use the
towing dolly (or if it is not available),
first turn the engine switch “ON” and
shift the shift lever to “N”. Make sure
that the gear is in the “N” position by
checking the gear position indicator.
Multi−mode manual transmission only:
After shifting the shift lever to the “N”
position, always make sure that the gear
is actually disengaged and is in neutral by
pushing the vehicle by hand or other
means. In case the gear can not be put
in neutral, turn the engine switch from the
“OFF” to “ON” position, and operate the
shift lever once from “N” to “E”, “M” or
“R”, then back to “N” again. Then turn the
engine switch from the “ON” to “OFF”
position. These procedures may help put
the gear in neutral. If the gear still can
not be put in neutral, you can not tow
without a towing dolly.
NOTICE
Do not tow with the key removed or
in the “LOCK” position when towing
from the rear without a towing dolly.
The steering lock mechanism is not
strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight.
(b) Using a flat bed truck

NOTICE
Do not tow with a sling type truck,
either from the front or rear. This
may cause body damage.
—Emergency towing
MS41062
If towing is necessary, we recommend
you to have it done by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or qualified
professional, such as a commercial tow
truck service.
If a towing service is not available in
an emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed by a cable or chain
secured to the right emergency towing
eyelet on the front of the vehicle. Use
extreme caution when towing vehicles.
To install the front towing eyelet, see
“—Installing front towing eyelet” on page
240 in this Section.
NOTICE
Only use the specified towing eyelets;
otherwise your vehicle may be dam-
aged.
A driver must be in the vehicle to steer
it and operate the brakes.
Towing in this manner may be done only
on hard−surfaced roads for short dis-
tances and at low speeds. Also, the
wheels, axles, drive train, steering and
brakes must all be in good condition.
