3. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
4. Press and hold the brake pedal down with your right foot.
5. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual
transaxle).
6. On vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, place the
gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.
On vehicles equipped with continuously variable trans-
mission (CVT), make sure the selector lever is in the “P”
(PARK) position.NOTE
On vehicles equipped with CVT, the starter will not oper-
ate unless the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N”
(NEUTRAL) position.
For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P” (PARK)
position so that the wheels are locked.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position and make
certain that all warning lights are functioning properly
before starting the engine.
8. Turn the ignition switch to the “START” position without
pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the key when the
engine starts.NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start-up. These will
disappear as the engine warms up.
Startability of automatic transaxle vehicle and CVT
vehicle with ambient temperature of -22
°F (-30
°C) or
lower
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it
may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the
selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position.
This occurs because the transaxle has not warmed up suffi-
ciently; it does not indicate a problem. If this occurs, place the
selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine
idle for at least 10 minutes.
The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to start nor-
mally.
Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

Passing accelerationTo gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when
passing another vehicle) push the accelerator to the floor. The
CVT will automatically downshift.NOTE
In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the
accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.WaitingFor short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle
can be left in selector lever position and held stationary with
the service brake.
For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the
selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the
parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the
service brake.
Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure
that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or Sports
mode position.
ParkingTo park the vehicle, first bring it to a complete stop, fully
engage the parking brake, and then move the selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position.When the CVT makes no speed changeIf the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does
not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it
may be that there is something unusual happening in the trans-
mission, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicle
checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair
facility of your choice as soon as possible.NOTE
When the warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the
warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” appear
on the information screen in the multi-information dis-
play, there could be a malfunction in the CVT. Refer to
“Continuously variable transmission (CVT): Warning dis-
play” on page 3-77.

Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed
when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the CVT.
Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while
holding down the brake pedal with the selector lever
in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions
may not rise as high as when performing the same
operation with the selector lever in the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position.

CAUTION

To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep
your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the acceler-
ator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or
service brake.
Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle
is stationary. Unexpected acceleration may occur if
the selector lever is in a position other than “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).

Driving through water

If the electrical circuits become wet, further operation of the
vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid driving through
water unless absolutely necessary. If driving through water is
unavoidable, use the following procedure:
Check the depth of the water and the terrain before attempting
to drive through it. Drive slowly to avoid creating excessive
water splashing.
Inspection and maintenance following
rough road operation

After operating the vehicle in rough road conditions, be sure to
perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures:

Check that the vehicle has not been damaged by rocks,
gravel, etc.

Carefully wash the vehicle with water.
Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly depressing the
brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes
still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mit-
subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as
soon as possible to have the brakes checked.

Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clogging the radiator
core.

After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle
and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy
because of water contamination, it must be replaced with
new oil.

Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found,
dry the carpet etc.

Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing,
have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility of your choice.

Have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer replace
grease in the wheel bearings.
CAUTION
!
Never drive through water that is deep enough to
cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not
change the gearshift lever position (M/T) or the
selector lever position (CVT) while driving through
water.
Frequent driving through water can adversely affect
the life span of the vehicle; consult an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice and take the necessary measures to prepare,
inspect, and repair the vehicle.
After driving through water, apply the brakes to be
sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are
wet and not functioning properly, dry them out by
driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake
pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

If you turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is station-
ary with the headlights on, the headlights may become
dim. This behaviour is not abnormal. The headlights will
return to their original brightness after a short while.Electric power steering system warning displayTy p e 1

If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning display will
appear on the information screen in the multi-information dis-
play.
If the warning display appears while driving 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the engine.
2. Wait approximately 30 seconds and then restart the engine
to check whether the warning display goes out; if it then
remains off, there is no problem.
If the warning display does not go out, or it appears again
while driving, have the vehicle inspected at an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice.
CAUTION
!
If the warning display appears during driving, it
may become harder to turn the steering wheel.

Mirror image is displayed on the screen.

It is possible to set the display language of the screen to
English, Spanish or French.
For details, please refer to the separated owner’s manual
for “Mitsubishi Multi-Communication System”.

Under certain circumstances, it may become difficult to
see an image on the screen, even when the system is func-
tioning correctly.
• In a dark area, such as at night.
• When water drops or condensation are on the lens.
• When sun light or headlights shine directly into the lens.
→ When the camera picks up extremely bright light,
such as sunlight reflected off the rear bumper, a bright
vertical line may appear on the screen.

The rear-view camera uses a wide-angle lens. As a
result, images and distances shown on the screen are
not exact.
Actual distance may be different from distance indi-
cated by the lines on the screen, depending on the
loading condition of the vehicle and road surface
condition.

Tachometer

The tachometer shows engine revolutions per minute. This
allows the driver to determine the most efficient selector posi-
tion and engine speed combinations.
This gauge also assists in evaluating engine performance.
Rheostat meter illumination button

Each time you press this button, there is a sound and the bright-
ness of the instruments changes.NOTE
You can adjust to 8 different levels respectively for when
the front side-marker and parking lights are illuminated
and when they are not.

If the vehicle is equipped with the automatic light control,
when the light switch is in a position other than the “OFF”
position, the meter illumination switches automatically to
the adjusted brightness, depending on the brightness out-
side the vehicle.

The brightness level of the instruments is stored when the
ignition switch is turned to the “LOCK” position or the
operation mode is put in OFF.

If you press and hold the button for longer than about 1
second when the front side-marker and parking lights are
illuminated, the brightness level changes to the maximum
level. Pressing and holding the button for longer than
about 1 second again returns the brightness level to the
previous level.
CAUTION
!
The red zone indicates an engine speed beyond the
range of safe operation.
Select the correct shift position (manual transaxle)
or selector position (CVT) to control the engine
speed so that the tachometer indicator does not
enter the red zone.

When the brake fluid level is low.

When the brake system circuit is not working properly.
Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released
and brake warning light is off.
