Front air bags
GWarning
Observe "Important safety notes"
(Y page 44).
The front air bags increase protection for the
driver's and front-passenger's head and
chest.
Driver's air bag : deploys in front of the
steering wheel; front-passenger air bag ;
deploys in front of and above the glove box.
They are deployed:
Rin the event of certain frontal impacts
Rif the system determines that air bag
deployment can offer additional protection
to that provided by the seat belt
Rif the seat belt is fastened
Rindependently of other air bags in the
vehicle
If the vehicle overturns, the front air bags are
generally not deployed unless the system
detects high vehicle deceleration in a
longitudinal direction.
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air
bags. In the event of a collision, the air bag
control unit evaluates the vehicle
deceleration. When the first deployment
threshold is reached, the front air bag is filled
with enough propellant gas to reduce the risk
of injuries. The front air bag is fully deployed
if a second deployment threshold is exceeded
within a few milliseconds.
The deployment of the front-passenger air
bag is also influenced by the weight category
of the front passenger, which is determined
by the Occupant Classification System (OCS)
(Y page 48).
The lighter the passenger side occupant, the
higher the vehicle deceleration rate required
for second stage inflation of the front-
passenger front air bag. In the second stage,
the front air bags are inflated with the
maximum amount of propellant gas available.
In impact situations with deceleration or
acceleration values lower than the vehicle
deceleration or acceleration values preset in
the system, the front air bags are not
deployed. You will then be protected by the
seat belt.
The front-passenger air bag will only deploy
if:
Rthe system, based on the OCS weight
sensor readings, has detected that the
front-passenger seat is occupied.
Rthe 42 indicator lamp in the
center console is not lit, (Y page 48)
Rthe impact exceeds a preset deployment
threshold.
Side impact air bags
GWarning
Observe "Important safety notes"
(Y page 44).
GWarning!
The pressure sensors for side impact air bag
control are located in the doors. Do not
modify any components of the doors or door
trim panels including, for example, the
addition of door speakers.
Improper repair work on the doors or the
modification or addition of components to the
doors create a risk of rendering the side
impact air bags inoperative or causing
unintended air bag deployment. Work on the

Basic functions
Operating with headphones
iVehicles intended for sale in the USA are
equipped with cordless headphones.
Corded headphones are available for the
Canadian market and other markets.
You can use the cordless headphones
supplied and/or up to two sets of corded
headphones connected to the corresponding
jack of the rear-compartment screens
(Y page 137).
Information on:
Rswitching the cordless headphones on/off
Radjusting the volume of the headphones
Rselecting a screen for the headphones
can be found in the "cordless headphones"
section (Y page 140).
Using the main loudspeakers
This function is available in conjunction with
COMAND.
You can use the vehicle loudspeakers to
listen to a disc inserted in the rear-
compartment drive. To do so, at least one of
the rear-compartment screens must be set to
disc mode.

Multiple users
Simultaneous use of the rear-
compartment disc drive
The two rear screens can be operated more
or less independently of one another.
However, there can be a conflict in some
menus if the two screens are used
simultaneously.
If the rear-compartment disc drive is being
used for both screens simultaneously,
selecting certain menus or settings on one of
the screens also affects the other screen.
The following functions affect both screens:
R changing playback options
R selecting a track (from a track list or folder)
R using the play, pause and stop functions
R fast forwarding/rewinding or scrolling
R calling up the DVD menu and navigating
within it
R setting the language, subtitles and camera
angle
R calling up interactive DVD content
The following functions affect only one
screen:
R audio and video functions as well as picture
settings
R switching between full screen and the
menu
Switching between operating modes
When you exit an operating mode (e.g. audio
CD mode), the current setting is saved. If you
call up this operating mode again later, there
are two possibilities:
R the operating mode has been changed on
the other screen.
R the operating mode has not been changed.
In the first case, the operating mode appears
as it is on the other screen.
In the second case, the setting appears on the
screen as it was when you last exited the
operating mode.
