otherwise be distracted from the traffic con-
ditions by the seat moving of its own accord,
and as a result cause an accident. G
WARNING
The memory function can still be used if the
key has been removed. For this reason, chil-
dren should never be left unsupervised in the
vehicle. Otherwise, they could adjust the
seats and become trapped.
With the memory function, you can store up

Active ligh
tfunction The active light function is a system that
moves the headlamps according to the steer-
ing movements of the front wheels. In this
way, relevant areas remai nilluminated while
driving. This allows you to recognise pedes-
trians, cyclists and animals.
Active: when the lights are switched on.
Cornering light function The cornering light function improves the illu-
mination of the road over a wide angle in the
direction you are turning, enabling better vis-
ibility in tigh
tbends, for example. The corner-
ing light function can only be activated when
the dipped-beam headlamps are switched on.
Active:
R if you are driving at speeds below
40 km/h and switch on the turn signal or
turn the steering wheel.
R if you are driving at speeds between
40 km/h and 70 km/h and turn the steer-
ing wheel. Not active:
if you are driving at speeds above
40 km/h or switch off the turn signal or turn
the steering wheel to the straight-ahead posi-
tion.
The cornering light function may remain lit for
a short time, but is automatically switched off
after no more than three minutes.
Motorway mode Motorway mode increases the range of the
beam.
Active:

on. The engine cannot be started. Starting the engine
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Never leave the engine running in enclosed
spaces. The exhaust gases contain carbon
monoxide. Inhaling exhaust fumes consti-
tutes a health hazard and could lead to loss
of consciousness or even death.
! Do not depress the accelerator pedal
when starting the engine.
i Vehicles with apetrol engine: the
engine runs at a highe rengine speed during a cold start so that the catalytic converter
can reach operating temperature more
quickly. In this case, the sound of the
engine may be different.
Manual transmission X
Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
X Depress the clutch pedal fully.
X Shift to neutral N.
i You can only start the engine when the
clutch pedal is fully depressed.
Automatic transmission X
Shift the transmission to position P.
Transmission positio ndisplay Pis shown in
the multifunction display.
i When the transmission is in position N,
you can also start the engine with the brake
pedal depressed.
Starting procedure X
To start a petrol engine: turn the key to
position 3in the ignition lock
(Y page 127) and release it as soon as the
engine is running.
X To start adiesel engine: turn the key to
position 2in the ignition lock
(Y page 127).
The % preglow indicator lamp in the
instrumen tcluster lights up.
X When the %preglow indicator lamp
goes out, tur nthe key to position 3
(Y page 127) and release it as soon as the
engine is running.
i You can start the engine without preglow
if the engine is warm.
i Vehicles with automatic transmis-
sion: you can also use the touch-start func-
tion. To do this, turn the key to position 3
(Y page 127) and release it immediately.
The engine then starts automatically. Driving

Do not place several floormats on top of one
another.
G
WARNING
Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery roa dsurface. This could
cause the drive wheels to lose their grip and
the vehicle could skid. This could cause you
to lose control of your vehicle and cause an
accident. G
WARNING
The clutch may overheat if you hold the vehi-
cle stationary on uphill gradients by depress-
ing the accelerato rpedal. If the clutch does
overheat, a warning tones ounds and a display
message is shown in the multifunction dis-
play. The frictional connection of the clutch
may then be interrupted. The vehicle may roll
away.A s a result, you could cause an acci-
dent.
You will only be able to continue you journey
once the clutch has cooled down and the dis-
play message in the multifunction display has
disappeared.
Never hold the vehicle stationary on uphill
gradients by depressing the accelerator.
Instead, only ever hold the vehicle stationary
on uphill gradients by
R depressing the brake pedal
or
R activating the HOLD function
or
R engaging the electric parking brake
i Bear in mind that the power transmission
between the engine and the transmission
is interrupted when the engine is switched
off. Therefore, to prevent the vehicle from
rolling away, shift the automatic transmis-
sion to park position Pand apply the elec-
tric parking brake when the engine is
switched off and the vehicle is stationary. DIRECTS

lowing:
R comfort-oriented engine settings.
R optimal fuel consumption resulting from
the automatic transmission shifting up
sooner.
R the vehicle pulling away more gently in
forward and reverse gears, unless the
accelerator pedal is depressed fully.
R increased sensitivity. This improves driving
stability on slippery road surfaces, for
example.
R the automatic transmission shifting up
sooner. This results in the vehicle being
driven at lower engine speeds and the
wheels being less likely to spin.
Drive program Sis characterised by the fol-
lowing:
R sporty engine settings
R the automatic transmission shifting up
later
R as a result of the later automatic transmis-
sion shift points, the fuel consumption pos-
sibly being higher 138

When manual drive program Mis activa-
ted via the steering wheel gearshift pad-
dles, the temporarily active manual drive
program Mwill be deactivated automati-
cally after a limited time, if the driving sit-
uation permits. In this case, the automatic
transmission shifts into the automatic drive
program that was last engaged, i.e. Eor S.
When driving on downhill gradients, the
temporarily active manual drive program
M will only be deactivated if the accelerator
pedal is depressed while the vehicle is roll-
ing downhill.
Upshifting X
Pull the right-hand steering wheel gearshift
paddle (Y page 138).
The automatic transmission shifts up to the
next gear.
i If the maximum engine speed on the cur-
rently engaged gear is reached and you
continue to accelerate, the automatic
transmission automatically shifts up in
order to prevent engine damage.
Downshifting X
Pull the left-hand steerin gwheel gearshift
paddle (Y page 138).
The automatic transmission shifts down to
the next gear.
i If you brake the vehicle or stop without
shifting down, the automatic transmission
will shift down to a gear that will allow the
vehicle to accelerate or pull away again.
i For maximum acceleration, pull the left-
hand steering wheel gearshift paddle until
the transmission selects the optimum gear
for the current speed.
i If the engine exceeds the maximum
engine speed when shifting down, the auto-
matic transmission protects against engine
damage by not shifting down. Automatic transmission
