Power steering
Power steering uses energy from the
engine to assist you in steering the vehi-
cle. If the engine is off or if the power
steering system becomes inoperative,
the vehicle may still be steered, but it will
require increased steering effort.
Should you notice any change in the
effort required to steer during normal
vehicle operation, have the power steer-
ing checked by a HYUNDAI authorised
repairer.✽✽
NOTICE
If the power steering drive belt breaks
or if the power steering pump malfunc-
tions, the steering effort will greatly
increase.

✽ NOTICE
If the vehicle is parked for extended
periods outside in cold weather (below
-10°C/14°F), the power steering may
require increased effort when the engine
is first started. This is caused by
increased fluid viscosity due to the cold
weather and does not indicate a mal-
function.
When this happens, increase the engine
RPM by depressing the accelerator until
the RPM reaches 1,500 rpm then release
or let the engine idle for two or three
minutes to warm up the fluid.

A tilt steering wheel allows you to adjust
the steering wheel before you drive. You
can also raise it to give your legs more
room when you exit and enter the vehicle(if equipped).
The steering wheel should be positioned
so that it is comfortable for you to drive,
whilst permitting you to see the instru-
ment panel warning lights and gauges.
STEERING WHEEL
CAUTION
Never hold the steering wheel to the
extreme right or left for more than 5
seconds with the engine running.Holding the steering wheel for morethan 5 seconds in either positionmay cause damage to the power
steering pump.
WARNING
Never adjust the angle and height of steering wheel whilst driving.
You may lose your steering con-
trol and cause severe personal
injury or accidents.
After adjusting, push the steering wheel both up and down to be
certain it is locked in position.

The rear parking assist system assists
the driver during backward movement of
the vehicle by chiming if any object is
sensed within a distance of 47 in. (120
cm) behind the vehicle. This system is asupplemental system and it is not intend-
ed to nor does it replace the need for
extreme care and attention of the driver.
The sensing range and objects
detectable by the back sensors are limit-
ed. Whenever backing-up, pay as much
attention to what is behind you as you
would in a vehicle without a rear parkingassist system. Operation of the rear parking assist system

Operating condition
This system will activate when backing
up with the ignition switch ON.
If the vehicle is moving at a speed over
6 mph (10 km/h), the system may not
be activated correctly.
The sensing distance whilst the rear parking assist system is in operation is
approximately 47 in. (120 cm).
When more than two objects are sensed at the same time, the closest
one will be recognized first.

Types of warning sound
When an object is 47 in. to 32 in. (120 cm to 81 cm) from the rear bumper:
Buzzer beeps intermittently.
When an object is 31 in. to 16 in. (80 cm to 41 cm) from the rear bumper:
Buzzer beeps more frequently.
When an object is within 15 in. (40 cm) of the rear bumper:
Buzzer sounds continuously.

D170200AEN Non-operational conditions of rear parking assist system The rear parking assist system may not operate properly when:
1. Moisture is frozen to the sensor. (It willoperate normally when the moisture has been cleared.)
2. The sensor is covered with foreign matter, such as snow or water, or the
sensor cover is blocked. (It will operate
normally when the material is removed
or the sensor is no longer blocked.)
3. Driving on uneven road surfaces (unpaved roads, gravel, bumps, gradi-ent).
4. Objects generating excessive noise (vehicle horns, loud motorcycle
engines, or truck air brakes) are within
range of the sensor.
5. Heavy rain or water spray exists.
6. Wireless transmitters or mobile phones are within range of the sensor.
7. The sensor is covered with snow.
8. Trailer towing The detecting range may decrease when:
1. The sensor is stained with foreign mat-
ter such as snow or water. (The sens-
ing range will return to normal when
removed.)
2. Outside air temperature is extremely hot or cold.
The following objects may not be rec-ognized by the sensor:
1. Sharp or slim objects such as ropes, chains or small poles.
2. Objects which tend to absorb the sen- sor frequency such as clothes, spongy
material or snow.
3. Undetectable objects smaller than 40 in. (1 m) in height and narrower than 6 in.

The rear parking assist system may
not sound sequentially depending on the speed and shapes of the objectsdetected.
The rear parking assist system may malfunction if the vehicle bumperheight or sensor installation has been
modified or damaged. Any non-factory
installed equipment or accessories
may also interfere with the sensor per-
formance.
The sensor may not recognize objects less than 15 in. (40 cm) from the sen-
sor, or it may sense an incorrect dis-
tance. Use caution.
When the sensor is frozen or stained with snow, dirt, or water, the sensor
may be inoperative until the stains are
removed using a soft cloth.
Do not push, scratch or strike the sen- sor. Sensor damage could occur.

This system can only sense objects with-
in the range and location of the sensors;
It can not detect objects in other areas
where sensors are not installed. Also,
small or slim objects, such as poles or
objects located between sensors may not
be detected by the sensors.
Always visually check behind the vehi-
cle when backing up.
Be sure to inform any drivers of the
vehicle that may be unfamiliar with the
system regarding the systems capabili-

Self-diagnosis
If you don’t hear an audible warning
sound or if the buzzer sounds intermit-tently when shifting the gear to the R
(Reverse) position, this may indicate a
malfunction in the rear parking assist sys-
tem. If this occurs, have your vehicle
checked by a HYUNDAI authorised
repairer as soon as possible.
WARNING
Pay close attention when the vehi- cle is driven close to objects on theroad, particularly pedestrians, andespecially children. Be aware thatsome objects may not be detectedby the sensors, due to the object’sdistance, size or material, all ofwhich can limit the effectiveness ofthe sensor. Always perform a visu-al inspection to make sure the vehi-cle is clear of all obstructionsbefore moving the vehicle in anydirection.
WARNING
Your new vehicle warranty does not cover any accidents or damage tothe vehicle or injuries to its occu-pants due to a rear parking assistsystem malfunction. Always drivesafely and cautiously.

Power brakes
Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes
that adjust automatically through normal
usage.
In the event that the power-assisted
brakes lose power because of a stalled
engine or some other reason, you can
still stop your vehicle by applying greater
force to the brake pedal than you nor-
mally would. The stopping distance, how-
ever, will be longer.
When the engine is not running, the
reserve brake power is partially depleted
each time the brake pedal is applied. Do
not pump the brake pedal when the
power assist has been interrupted.
Pump the brake pedal only when neces-
sary to maintain steering control on slip-
pery surfaces. E070101AUN
In the event of brake failure
If service brakes fail to operate whilst the
vehicle is in motion, you can make an
emergency stop with the parking brake.
The stopping distance, however, will be
much greater than normal.
BRAKE SYSTEM

When descending a long or steep
hill, shift to a lower gear and
avoid continuous application of
the brakes. Continuous brakeapplication will cause the brakes
to overheat and could result in a
temporary loss of braking per-
formance.
Wet brakes may impair the vehi- cle’s ability to sefely slow down;
the vehicle may also pull to oneside when the brakes are applied.
Applying the brakes lightly will
indicate whether they have been
affected in this way. Always test
your brakes in this fashion after
driving through deep water. To
dry the brakes, apply them lightly
whilst maintaining a safe forward
speed until brake performancereturns to normal.
WARNING - Parking brake
Applying the parking brake whilst
the vehicle is moving at normal
speeds can cause a sudden loss of
control of the vehicle. If you mustuse the parking brake to stop the
vehicle, use great caution in apply-
ing the brake.
WARNING - Brakes
Do not drive with your foot rest- ing on the brake pedal. This will create abnormal high brake tem-
peratures, excessive brake lining
and pad wear, and increasedstopping distances.

To dry the brakes, apply the brakes
lightly until the braking action returns to
normal, taking care to keep the vehicle
under control at all times. If the braking
action does not return to normal, stop
as soon as it is safe to do so and call a
HYUNDAI authorised repairer for
assistance.
Don't coast down hills with the vehicle out of gear. This is extremely haz-
ardous. Keep the vehicle in gear at all
times, use the brakes to slow down,
then shift to a lower gear so that
engine braking will help you maintain a
safe speed.
Don't "ride" the brake pedal. Resting your foot on the brake pedal whilst driv-ing can be dangerous because it can
result in the brakes overheating and
losing their effectiveness. It also
increases the wear of the brake com-
ponents.
If a tyre goes flat whilst you are driving, apply the brakes gently and keep the
vehicle pointed straight ahead whilst
you slow down. When you are moving
slowly enough for it to be safe to do so,
pull off the road and stop in a safe
place. If your vehicle is equipped with an
automatic transaxle, don't let your vehi-
cle creep forward. To avoid creeping
forward, keep your foot firmly on the
brake pedal when the vehicle isstopped.
Use caution when parking on a hill. Firmly engage the parking brake and
place the shift lever in P (automatic
transaxle) or in first or reverse gear
(manual transaxle). If your vehicle is
facing downhill, turn the front wheels
into the kerb to help keep the vehicle
from rolling. If your vehicle is facing
uphill, turn the front wheels away from
the kerb to help keep the vehicle from
rolling. If there is no kerb or if it is
required by other conditions to keep
the vehicle from rolling, block the
wheels.
Under some conditions your parking brake can freeze in the engaged posi-
tion. This is most likely to happen when
there is an accumulation of snow or ice
around or near the rear brakes or if the
brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the
parking brake may freeze, apply it only
temporarily whilst you put the gear
selector lever in P (automatic
transaxle) or in first or reverse gear
(manual transaxle) and block the rear
wheels so the vehicle cannot roll. Then
release the parking brake. Do not hold the vehicle on the upgrade
with the accelerator pedal. This can
cause the transaxle to overheat.
Always use the brake pedal or parking
brake.

If the engine stalls at a crossroad
or crossing
If the engine stalls at a crossroad orcrossing, set the shift lever in the N
(Neutral) position and then push the
vehicle to a safe place.
If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with a ignition lock
switch, the vehicle can move forward
by shifting to the 2(second) or 3(third)
gear and then turning the starter with-out depressing the clutch pedal. F020200AUN
If a puncture occurs whilst driv-
ing the vehicle
1. Bring the car to rest as soon as it is
safe to do so and with the minimum
amount of braking required which will
assist in maintaining the maximum
amount of control. The vehicle should
be parked wherever possible upon firm
level ground to facilitate wheel chang-ing.
2. If the vehicle is creating a hazard and the road conditions do not permit the
wheel to be changed safely, assis-tance should be sought.
3. Passengers must not be allowed to remain inside the vehicle during wheel
changing. If a puncture occurs whilst
the vehicle is on a motorway, the pas-
sengers should take refuge on the
motorway embankment to avoid the
possibility of injury occurring should
the vehicle be struck by other motor-
way traffic.
4. Wheel changing should be performed according to the following instructions. F020300AFD If engine stalls whilst driving
1. Reduce your speed gradually, keeping
a straight line. Move cautiously off the
road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.
3. Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, contact a
HYUNDAI authorised repairer or seek
other qualified assistance.
