Vehicle equipment
In this chapter, all production, country, and
optional equipment that is offered in the model
range is described. For this reason, descrip-
tions will be given of some equipment that may
not be available in a vehi
cle, for example due to
the special options or national-market version
selected. This also app lies to safety related
functions and systems.
Tachometer
If at all possible, avoid engine speeds in the yel-
low advance warning zone, arrow 1.
Absolutely avoid engine speeds in the red
warning field, arrow 2. In this range, the engine
speed is limited to protect the engine.
Engine oil temperature
When the engine is at normal operating temper-
ature, the engine oil temperature is between
approx. 210 7/100 6 and approx. 300 7/
150 6.
If the engine oil temperature is too high, a warn-
ing lamp lights up in the instrument cluster.
Fuel gauge
Fuel tank capacity: approx. 14 US gal/53 liters.
You can find information on refueling on
page 30.
If the tilt of the vehicle varies for a longer period,
when you are driving in mountainous areas, for
example, the indicator may fluctuate slightly.

Reserve
Refuel as soon as possible once your
cruising range falls below 30 miles/
50 km, otherwise engine functions are not
ensured and damage can occur. <
Once the fuel level ha s fallen to the reserve
zone of approx. 2.1 US gal/8 liters, the indicator
lamp and cruising range for the remaining
amount of fuel are displa yed briefly. The indica-
tor lamp remains permanently on when the
remaining range is less than approx. 30 miles/
50 km.

Observe the following when
refueling
Note the following instructions for your
BMW 1-Series M Coupe that deviate from the
description in the Owner's Manual for Vehicle.
Fuel tank capacity
Approx. 14 US gal/53 liters, including the
reserve capacity of 2.1 US gal/8 liters.
Refuel as soon as possible once your
cruising range falls below 30 miles/
50 km; otherwise, engine functions are not
ensured and damage can occur. <
Fuel specifications
Never use fuels labeled at the fuel pump as
metal-containing.
Do not use leaded gasoline or gasoline
with metallic additives such as manga-
nese or iron; doing so can cause permanent
damage to the catalyti c converter and other
components. <
Do not fill the tank with E85, i.e. fuel con-
taining 85 X ethanol, nor with FlexFuel.
Otherwise, the engine and fuel supply system
will be damaged. <
Required fuel
Super premium gasoline/AKI 93
Always use this premium grade fuel to obtain
maximum fuel economy and performance.
The minimum approved fuel grade is AKI 91.
Do not use any gasoline below the speci-
fied minimum fuel grade. Otherwise, the
engine could be damaged. <
Use high-quality brands
Field experience has indicated significant dif-
ferences in fuel quality: volatility, composition,
additives, etc., among ga solines offered for sale
in the United States and Canada. Fuels contain-
ing up to and including 10 X ethanol or other
oxygenates with up to 2.8 X oxygen by weight,
that is, 15 X MTBE or 3 X methanol plus an
equivalent amount of coso lvent, will not void the
applicable warranties with respect to defects in
materials or workmanship.
The use of poor-quality fuels may result in
drivability, starting and stalling problems
especially under certain environmental condi-
tions such as high ambient temperature and
high altitude.
Should you encounter drivability problems
which you suspect could be related to the fuel
you are using, we recommend that you respond
by switching to a recogn ized high-quality brand
such as gasoline that is advertised as Top Tier
Detergent Gasoline.
Failure to comply with these recommendations
may also result in unscheduled maintenance. <

The concept
Indicator and warning lamps appear in the dis-
play area. See the table for information on
causes and how to react. Note whether a lamp
lights up alone or in combination with another.
Some lamps can light up in different colors.
Corresponding distinctions are made in the
text.
In addition to the indi cator lamps described in
the Owner's Manual for the vehicle, please note
the following indicator lamps in your
