On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of you r emission control system. Each
monitored compo nen t in your eng ine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a ma l­
function, the component will be identified
and the fau lt stored as a code in the control
module memory.
The MIL light may a lso illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed ¢

In o rder to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cia l diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release¢
fig. 25.
Your authorized Audi dea ler or a qualified
service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair .
Malfunction Indicator lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) &'I in
the instrument cluster¢
page 13, fig. 6 is
part of the On-Board Diagnostic COBO II) sys­
tem .
The warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignit io n is switched on and goes out after
the e ngine starts and the idle has stabilized.
Th is indicates that the MIL is working prope r­
ly.
If th e light d oes not go out after the engine
is started, or illum inates wh ile you are dr iv­
ing, a malfunc tion may exist in the engine sys­
tem.
If the light illum inates, the catalytic con­
verte r could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced p ower (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the cond ition corrected.
Contact you r authorized Audi dea le r.
If the light illum inates, the electronic speed
limi ter may also be malfunct ioning . For more

Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory eq uipped w ith
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle. To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fai lure and loss of control if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle a lso has an electronic speed limit­
er . The electronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from going faster than the tire speed

Selector lever lock
The selec tor lever lo ck prevent s a gear from
being engaged accidentally and unintention­
ally setting the vehicle in motion .

The selector lever lock is released as follows:
• Switch the ignition on.
• Step on the brake pedal
and simultaneous ly
hold down the re lease button .
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
sitions when the ignition is on. To move the
l ever from t hese positions the driver m ust de­
press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the
driver, the follow ing warning appears in t he inst
rument cluste r display when the se lector
is in P and N:
To start engine or select gear apply foot brake when stationary
The selector leve r lock is eff ective o nly when
t h e vehi cle is stationary and at speeds be low
5 km/h . At hig he r sp eeds, the lock in the N
pos ition is a utomat ica lly switched off.
The selector leve r is not locked when rap id
sh ifts are made through the N posi tion (e.g.
from R to D) . This a llows you to "ro ck" the ve ­
hi cle if it becomes stuck. If the leve r is i n the
N position fo r more than 1 second with the
brake pedal not depressed, the selector lock
engages automatically.
Release button
T he re lease bu tton in t he sele ctor lever han­
dle p revents acci dent al shifts into cer tain se­
lector lever positions . When yo u press the re ­
l ease b utton , the selector lever lock is cancel­
led. In the illustration , the posit ions in which
the re lease button has to be p ressed are high­
li ghted in color

Ignition key removal lock
The ign ition key can only be remove after the
ignit ion is switched off if the selector lever is
i n P. As long as the ignition key is removed,
the selector lever is locked i n P.
(D Tips
If t he se lector lever does not engage,
the re is a malfuncti on. The engine is disa­
bled to prevent the vehicle from driving off
unintentionally. To allow the se lector lever
to engage aga in, p roceed as follows: P ress
and release the b ra ke pedal.

More important things to know about
front airbags

Safety belts are impo rtant to help keep fro nt
seat occupants in the p roper seated pos it io n
so that airbags can unfo ld prope rly and pro­
vide supp lemental protection in a fronta l co l­
lision .
The front a irbags are designed to provide ad­
d itiona l protect ion for the chest a nd face of
the dr iver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- the seats have been positioned so that the
occupant is properly seated as far as possi­
ble from the a irbag,
- and the head restraints have been proper ly
adjusted .
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye
with great force, things you have on your lap or have placed on the seat could become dan­
ge rous projectiles, and be pushed into you if
the airbag inflates .
When an a irbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in
the vehicle . This d ust is made up mostly of a
powder used to lubricate the airbags as they
deploy. It cou ld irritate s kin .
It is important to remember that while the
supp lemental airbag system is designed to re­
d uce the l ikelihood of serious in juries, other
in juries, fo r example swelling, bruisi ng and
m inor abras ions, ca n also happe n when air­
bags in flate. Airbags do not protect the a rms
or the lower pa rts of the body. Front airbags
only s upplement the t hree point safety belts
in some frontal collisions in which the vehicle deceleration
is high eno ugh to deploy the air ­
bags .
Front airbags will not deploy:
- if the ignition is sw itched off when a c rash
occu rs,
- in side co llisions,
- in rear-end co llisions,
- in rollovers,
-when the crash dece leration measured by
the airbag system is less than the min imum
threshold needed for a irbag deployment as
reg istered by the electronic control unit .
The front passenge r airbag will al so not
deploy:
- when the front passenger seat is not occu­
p ied,
- when t he weight on the front passenger
seat as sensed by the Advanced Airbag Sys ­
tem ind icates that the front ai rbag on the
passenger side has to be turned off by the
elec troni c con trol un it (the

li ght comes on and st ays on) .

Sitting in the wrong position can increase

- To reduce the risk of inju ry w he n t he air ­
bags i nflate, the drive r and passengers
m ust always sit in an upr ight position,
m ust not lean aga inst or place any part
of their b ody too close to the area where
the airbags a re located .
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of posi­
tion or too close to the a irbag can be se­
rio usly injured by a n airbag as it unfolds
wit h great force i n the blink of an eye

- W hen you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has p roper­
ly engaged . The hood sho uld be flush
wit h the surrou nding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while dr iv ing that the hood
is not s ecured properly, stop at once and
close it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment!
Whenever you must perform an y wo rk in the
eng ine compartment, for example checking
and filling the different fluids, there is a risk
of injury, burns and a ccidents. To prevent
per sonal injury alway s obs erve the following
