This reminder appears along with the -i. symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch off the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. What is more, you cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside. •
Light/rain sensor defective ~'j.
Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers defective
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has failed. For safety
reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO. However, you can continue to turn the lights on and off using
the light switch. In the case of a defect in the rain sensor, the wind­
shield wiper lever functions are still available. Have the light/rain
sensor checked as soon as possible by an authorized Audi dealer. •

When the symbol illum inates, you can a lter your d riving style to
a ssist the fil ter sel f-cl eanin g process. Drive for a pproxim ate ly 15
m inu tes with the selector lever in the S pos it ion at a min imum speed
of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an engine speed of approximately 2,000
RPM. The temperature inc rease that will result from t his can burn off
the soot in the filte r. The sym bol will switc h off when the cleaning is
su ccessf ul. After a s uccessfu l cleaning, t he re is no need to b ring t he
car to an author ized dealer or qualified workshop because this is part
of nor mal ve hicle operat io n.
If t he symbo l does not switch off, see your authorized dealer or
o ther qualif ied workshop to have the p roblem co rrected.

Even when the Emission Control System is operating properly, the
exhaust gas can have a sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some
operat ing states. This depends on the sulfur content of the fue l being
used. Using a different brand of fuel may help, or filling the tank with
lead-free supe r grade gasoline. •

Diesel particulate filter
The diesel particulate filter filters nearly all of the soot particles out
of the exhaust. The filter cleans itself automatica lly under norma l
driving conditions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for example,
because you are only driving short distances), the fi lter becomes
clogged with soot and the symbol for the diesel particulate filter
illuminates ~
page 40.
& WARNING
• Do not park your vehicle over flammable materials such as
grass or leaves because the high temperature of the diesel partic­
ulate filter could start a fire.
• Do not apply an underbody protectant in the exhaust system
area or a fire could start. •
Avoid damaging the vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over curbs, steep ramps, etc.,
make certain that low-lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged.
Thi s is espec ially true for vehicles with low-slung chassis (sports
chassis)" and fully loaded vehicles. •

Your personal
style of driving will determine the economy
of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and noise levels.
Fuel economy, environmental impact, and wear on your engine,
brakes and tires largely depend on three factors:
• your personal dr iv ing style
• operating conditions
• technical limitations
If you anticipate what you need to do next and drive economically,
you can easily cut your fuel consumption by 10-15 percent. This
section will give you some tips on how you can he lp the environment
and your pocketbook.
(I) Tips
The consumption est imates as published by ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the road, which will vary
depending upon vehicle load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc.
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating.
-Avoid unnecessary accelerating and braking.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating . If you antici­
pate what is going to happen next, you will need to brake less and,
thus, accelerate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possible - for
example when you see that the next traffic light is red. •

Automatic car wash
The vehicle can be washed in almost any mod ern auto­
matic car wash.
T he vehi cle p aint is so dura ble tha t the vehicle c an norm ally be
washed without problems in an automatic car wash . H owever, the
effect on t he pa int depends to a la rge ex ten t on t he desig n of the
facility, the filter ing of the was h water, t he type of wash and care
material, etc . If t he pa int has a dull appearance after going through
t he ca r wash or is sc ratched, bring this to the attention of the ope r­
ator immediately . If necessary, use a different car wash .
Be fore goi ng th ro ugh a car wash, be s ure to take the usual precau­
tions such as clos ing the windows and the Panoramic s lid in g su nroof.
Fa cto ry inst alled a ntennas must no t be removed .
If you have installed addit ional accessories on the vehicle -such as
spoilers, roof rack, etc . - it is best to ask the car wash ope rator if these
sho uld be removed.

Please take note of the following points before going through an
automatic car wa sh with your vehicle , so that you can avoid
damage to your veh icle.

• Compare the tra ck of your vehicle with the d istance between
the guide rails of the facility -there is a risk of damage to the
wheels and tires.
• Compare the height and width of your vehicle with the height
and width of the tunnel at the facility.
• Fold the exterior mirrors flat -there is a risk of damaging the
e xterior mirrors . Power folding e xterior mirrors* must not be
folded in or out by hand. Use the power function!
• Do not allow the wiper blade to fall onto the wind shield after
the vehicle is dr ied · there is a risk of damag ing the paint on the
hood .

Changing the engine oil
Engine oil must be chang ed at int ervals listed in th e

Th e eng ine oil an d oi l filter mus t be c hanged accor ding to the mile age
and time interva ls spec ified in your vehicle's Warranty
& Maintena nce
book let. Do not ex ceed these interv als - ha rmfu l sl ud ge and de posi ts
from o ld eng ine oi l can reduce engine performance and can lead to
expensive engine repairs.
Chang ing o il at r egular intervals is so very important because the
L u br icating pro perties of o il decrease gradually d u ring normal veh icle

Under some circumstances t he e ng ine oi l should even be changed
more often than specified for no rma l use . Change oi l more often if
you often drive s ho rt dista nce s, ope ra te the vehicle in d usty a reas or
mostly unde r stop -and-go traffic cond itions, or when you use your
vehicle whe re te mper atures s tay be low free zing po int f or long
per iods.
Detergent addit ives i n the o il w ill make fresh oil look dark after the
engine has bee n running for a short time . This is normal and is not a
reason to chan ge the oil mo re often t han recommended.

Stop! Before working in the engine compartment, always read and
heed all WARNINGS =>

page 301. The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially dangerous area and can cause serious
personal injury .
& WARNING
If you must change the engine oil in your vehicle:
• Always wear eye protection .
• To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine oil let the eng ine
cool down to the touch.
• When removing the oil drain plug w ith your fingers, stay as far
away as possible. Always keep your forearm parallel to the ground
to help prevent hot oil from running down your arm .
• Drain the oil into a container designed for this purpose, one large enough to hold at least the total amount of oil in your
engine .
• To reduce the risk of poisoning, never use empty food or
beverage containers that might mislead someone into drinking
from them .
