Body cavity sealing

If any wax s hould seep ou t of the cavi ty when the amb ient temp era­
ture is high , it can be removed w it h a plastic sc raper and a suitable
so lvent .

Solvents can be dangerous.
• Benzine is flammable and toxic . If you use benzine for
removing the wax, keep sparks, flame and lighted cigarettes
away . Never dump benzine on the ground, into open streams or
down sewage drains.
• Be sure to observe all safety and environmental regulations.

Tires
General notes
Tires may be the least appreciated and most abused
parts of a motor vehicle.
T ir es may be the least appreciated and most abused pa rts of a motor
vehicle . Tires are, however, one of the most important parts of a
vehicle , pa rticul arly conside ring the comparat ive ly small patch of
rubber on eac h tire that assures that all-important contact between
you, your veh icle and the road.
Maintai ning t he cor rect tire pressu re, mak ing su re that your veh icle
and i ts tires do not have to carry more weight t han they can safely
hand le, avoid ing damage from road ha za rds and regularly inspecting
tires for damage includ ing cuts, s lashes irregular wea r and ove rall
condi tion a re the mos t important th ings that you can do to help avoid
sudden t ire failure including tread separation and blowouts.
Avoiding damage
If you have to d rive ove r a cur b or sim ilar obstacle, d rive very slowly
and as close as possible at a rig ht angle to the curb .
Always keep chemicals incl ud ing grease, oil, gaso line and brake f luid
o ff t he t ires .
Ins pect the ti res regularly for damage (cu ts, cracks o r blisters, e tc.) .
Remove any foreign bodies embe dded in the treads.
Storing tires
M ark tires w hen yo u remove t hem to indica te t he d ire ct io n of rota ­
tion . This ensures you to be ab le to mount them correctly when you
re insta ll them.
Whe n removed, t he wheels or tires should be sto red in a cool, dry and
preferably da rk p lace.
Safety first
Store tires in a v ertica l pos it io n if they a re not mount ed on rims, in a
hor izonta l posit ion if they are mounted on r ims.
New tires

Hidden damage
Damage to tires and rims is often not readi ly visible. If yo u notice
unu sual vib ra ti on o r the ve hicle pulls to one side, t his may in dica te
that one of the t ires has been damaged. The tires must be checked
im media tely by an auth oriz ed A ud i d eale r or qual ifie d wor ks hop.
Unidirectional tires
A un id irectional tire can be identified by arrows o n th e sidewall , th at
point in the direct ion the t ire is designed to rotate. You must fo llow
t he s peci fied dire ction o f ro tat io n . This is neces sary so t hat t hese
tires can deve lop their optimum cha racte ristics regard ing g rip, road
noise, we ar an d hy dropl aning res ist an ce. F o r more informat ion

& WARNING
New tires or tires that are old , worn or damaged cannot provide
maximum control and braking ability.
• New tires tend to be slippery and must also be broken-in . To
reduce the risk of losing control, a collision and serious personal
injuries , drive with special care for the first 350 miles (560 km).
• Driving with worn or damaged tires can lead to loss of control,
sudden tire failure , including a blowout and sudden deflation ,
crashes and serious personal injuries . Have worn or damaged tires
replaced immediately. _..

vehicle at the tim e it was manufactured.
If you wish to improve comfort when operating the vehicle at
normal load (up to 3 occupants) , you can adjust tire pressures to
those specified for normal vehicle load. Before operating the
vehicle at maximum load, you must increase the tire pressures to
those specified for maximum vehicle load

Bear in mind that the tire pressure monitoring system* ca n only
monitor the tire pressures you have stored. The system does not
recogn ize the load condit ion of your vehicle.
The effectiveness of the tire pressure monitoring system* wi ll be
impaired if you store normal load pressures but then operate the
vehicle at its maximum load

See the illustration => page 295, fig. 212 for the locat ion of the label
either on driver's side B-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap (color of the
actual label and exact location on the vehicle will vary slightly).
Note that the following tab le is accurate at the time of going to press
and is subject to change. In the event of discrepancies, the tire pres­
sure label (On USA vehicles, the tire pressure label is located on the
dr iver's side B-pillar. On Canada vehicles, the tire pressure label is
located e ither on the driver's s ide B-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap)
always takes precedence.
The table below lists the recommended cold tire inflation pressures
for the Audi model covered by your Owner's Literature at the vehicle's
capacity weight and the tire sizes installed on the respective models
as origina l equipment, or as a factory option.

The correct tire pressure for the spare wheel is located on a label
either on the driver's s ide B-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap.
Beca use technica l changes may be made to vehicle equipment during
the model year, always compare the tir e s ize designation on the tir e
pressure label on your vehicle with the tires on your vehicle. Make sure that the tire size information on the vehicle label is the same as
the
size of the tires on the vehicle. This is especially important if the
vehicle belongs to someone e lse or you bought the vehicle with
different rims/tires or you bought the veh icle as a previous ly ow ned

T he tires and rims are essential pa rts of the vehicle's design . The tires
and r ims approved by Audi are specially matched to the character is­
t ics of the vehicle and can make a major contribut ion to good road
holding and safe handling when in good condition and properly
inflated

We recommend that all work on t ires and wheels be performed by an
authori zed Au di deale r. They are fam il ia r with recommended proce­
dures and have the necessary special tools and spare parts as well as
the proper facilities for disposing of the o ld tires.
Authorized Aud i dea lers have the necessary info rmation about tech­
nical requirements for insta lling or changing tires and rims .
Replacing tires and wheels
Tires should be replaced at least in pa irs and not ind iv idually (for
example both front tires or both rea r tires together) .
Be sure to read and heed the in formation to the tire pressure mon i­
t o ring system *=>
page 310.
Always b uy replacement radial tires t hat have the same specificat ions
a s t he tires approved for yo ur ve hicl e by Audi. Re placemen t tires must
always have the same load rating specification as the orig inal eq uip­
me nt or approved optiona l tires listed in the table =>
page 295.

• Winter t ires have ma ximum speed rating that may be lower
than your vehicle' s maximum speed .
• Never drive faster than the speed for which the winter or other
tires installed on your vehicle are rated .
& WARNING
Always adjust your driving to the road and t raffic conditions.
Never let the good ac celeration of the winter tire s and all-wheel
drive tempt you into taking extra risks . Always remember:
• Wh en braking, an alt-wheel drive vehicle handle s in the same
way as a front drive vehicle.
• Drive carefully and reduce your speed on icy and slippery roads,
even w inter tires cannot help under black ice conditions.

Use summe r tires when weather condit ions permit. They are quieter,
do not wea r as quickly and redu ce fuel consumpt io n.•
Snow chains
Snow c hains may be fitted only to the front wheels, and only to
certain tire sizes. Ask your authorized Audi dealer on which tire sizes
snow chains c an be u sed.
T he snow cha ins must have low-profile links and m ust not be thicker
t han 0 .53 in ch ( 13 .5 mm), incl uding the lock .
Remove wheel center covers and t rim discs befor e put ting snow
chains on your vehicle=:,

be fi tted ove r th e wheel bo lts. These a re available from auth orized
Audi dealers.
& WARNING
Using the wrong snow chains for your veh icle or installing them
in correctly can incre ase the risk of loss of control le ading to
serious personal injury.
• Snow chains are available in different size s. Always make sure
to follow the instructions provided by the snow chain manufac ­
turer .
• When driving with snow chains never dri ve faster than the
s peed permitted for your specific snow chain s.
• Always observe local regulations.

• Remove snow chains before d riving on roads not covered with

unnecessarily.
• Snow chains, which come into direct contact with the wheel rim,
can scratch o r damage it. Therefo re, make sure that the snow chains

dr iving a few yards and correct if necessary . Fo llow the instruct ions
from t he snow ch ain man ufactur er when doing so.

Wheel bolts
Wheel bolts must al ways be tightened to the c orrect
torque .
The desig n of wheel bo lts is matched to the factory installed rims. If
differen t rims a re fitted, the co rrect wheel bolts wi th the r ig ht length
and correctly shaped bolt heads must be used. This e nsures that ..,_

Notes on wheel changing
Please read the in formation => page 303, "New t ires and replacing
t ires and wheel s" i f yo u ar e going t o use a sp are tir e w hich is differe nt
from t he tires on yo ur vehicle.
After you c hange a ti re:
• Check the tire pressure on the spare immediately after installa·
tion.
• Have the wheel bolt tightening torque checked with a torque
wrench as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dealer or a qual· ified workshop.
• With steel and alloy wheel rims , the wheel bolts are correctly
tightened at a torque of 90 ft lbs. (120 Nm).
• If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded and difficult to
turn while changing a tire, they should be replaced before you check
the tightening torque .
• Replace the flat tire with a new one and have it installed on your
vehicle as soon as possible. Remount the wheel cover.
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced speeds.
& WARNING
• If you are going to equip your vehicle with tire s or rims which
differ from those which were factory in stalled, then be sure to
read the information =>
page 303, "New tires and replacing tires
and wheels".
• Always make sure the damaged wheel or even a flat tire and
the jack and tool kit are properly secured in the luggage compart­
ment and are not loose in the passenger compartment .
• In an accident or sudden maneuver they could fly forward,
injuring anyone in the vehicle .
• Always store damaged wheel , ja ck and tools securely in the
luggage compartment. Otherwise, in an accident or sudden

maneuver they could fly forward , causing injury to passengers in
the vehicle.
