Instrument lighting
The basic brightness of the illumination for the instru ­
ments, the center console and the display can be
adjusted.
- Press the knob to release it .

Rotating the knob to the right"+" will increase the basic
brightness when it is dark.
- Rotating the knob to the left"-" will decrease the basic
brightness when it is dark.
- Pressing the knob will prevent unintentional changes.
(I) Tips
The illumination for the instrument cluster lights up whenever you
switch on the ignition with the vehicle headlights off . As the daylight
fades, the instrument cluster illumination likewise dims automati­
cally and will go out completely when the outside light is very low .
This feature is meant to remind you to switch on the headlights when
outside light conditions become poor.•

Xenon headlights
After starting the engine, the xenon headlights are automatically
adjusted to the load and angle of the vehicle (for example, during
acceleration and braking) . This prevents oncoming traffic from expe­
riencing unnecessary headlight glare from your xenon headlights .
If the system is not operating properly, a warning symbol in the Auto­
Check Control is displayed~
page 40. •

Adaptive light
When driving around bends, the relevant area of the road
is better illuminated.

The benefit of adaptive light is that the curve and the edge of the road
are better illuminated ~ fig. 53. Dynamic adaptive light is controlled
automatically, depending on vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.
When driving around bends, the headlights are controlled according
to steering wheel angle . So that there is no black hole ahead of the
vehicle, the two main beams pivot at different angles. ..,_

Roof load
T h e cargo on the roof must be securely attached.
H andling characteristics change when cargo is trans ­
p orted.
The pe rmissible roof load for yo ur vehicle is 165 lb s. (75 kg ). The
roof load is a combination of the weight of the carrier system and the
c argo .
When using roof rack systems with a lower load capacity , you cannot
use the maximum permissib le roof load. In t his case, the roof rac k
can o nly be loaded to the weight limit g iven in the insta llation g uide .
& WARNING
• The cargo must be securely attached on the roof rack , other­
wise you ri sk an accident .
• You must under no ci rcumstances exceed the permissible roof
load, the permissible axle loads and the permissible overall
weight of your vehicle· risk of an accident .
• Consider that when transporting heavy objects
or one with a
large surface, the handling characteristics change due to shift in
the center of gravity or the greater surface exposed to the wind. So
adapt your driving and your speed to prevailing conditions .

As a result of the increase wind resistance created by a roof rac k, yo ur
vehicle is using fue l unnecessari ly. So remove the roof rack after

• Alway s remove object s from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around in side the vehicle while dr iving or
when accelerating
or when applying the brake s or when driving
around a corner.
• When you are driving make sure that anything you may have
placed in the center console or other sto rage locat ions cannot fall
out into the footwells. In ca se of sudden braking you would not be
able to brake, depress the clutch or accelerate.
• Any pieces of clothing that you have
hung up must not int er­
fere with the driver 's view . The coat hooks a re designed only for
lightweight clothing . Never hang any clothing with hard, pointed
or heavy objects
in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passengers inside the vehicle. •

On the righ t side in the glove compartmen t is a holder with the key
body into which t he eme rgency key mus t be clip ped to be able to start
the vehicle.

If the climate control is running in cooling mode, air flows mainly
from vents @ and @. To achieve adequate cooling, you should never
close these vents completely. •

Rear air vents
The rear air vents are located in the center console.
- Rotate the thumbwheel to open and close the vents .
- To adjust the direction of the airflow from the outlet,
move the tab in the center of the outlet in the desired
direction . The direction of the air delivered from the vents
can be adjusted horizontally and vertically.
The air vents are actuated either automatically or manually
depending on the operating mode selected. Heated or unheated
fresh air, or cooled air flows from the vents .
The air vents to heat the rear footwell are located under the front
seats.
(I] Tips
If the climate control is operating in cooling mode, air flows primarily
from the vents in the center console. To achieve adequate cooling,
you should never close these vents completely. •

Economical use of the climate control
system
Economical use of the climate control system helps save
fuel.
When the climate control system is working in cooling mode,
engine performance is reduced and fuel consumption is
affected. To keep the time the climate control system is on as
short as possible, you should do the following:
- To save fuel, turn off cooling mode by pressing the AC
button (indicator light goes out).
- In addition, if you open the window or the panoramic
sliding/tilting sunroof* while driving, turn off cooling
mode by pressing the AC button (indicator light goes out).
- If the vehicle is extremely hot due to the heat of the sun,
briefly open doors and windows.

When you save fuel, you reduce emissions from the vehicle. •

• Sporty sh ifting characteristics can be set by selecting the
DYNAMIC mode. The S selector lev er position is not available.
• The dynamic steering may make noise when starting or stopp ing
the engine. This does not indicate a problem .•

You can choose between COMFORT, AUTO, DYNAMIC and
INDIVIDUAL* modes.

- Turn on the ignition.
- Press the left or right arrow button until the desired mode
appears in red.
You can change the driv ing mode when the vehicle is stationary or
w hil e driving. If traffic permits, after chan ging modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently selected mode
is also activated for the eng ine and transmission .
COMFORT
The COMFORT mode prov ides a comfo rtable vehi cle se tting . The
engine and automatic t ransm ission * respond in a balanced manner
when the accelerator pedal is pressed or released. Steering is light
and ind irect*, and adaptive dampers* provide a soft suspension . The
setting is ideal for driving on long stretches , such as on freeways.
AUTO
Full use of AUTO provides a comfortable, yet dynamic feel. The
sett ing is perfect for daily use .
DYNAMIC
DYNAMIC gives the vehicle a sporty feeling. The eng ine responds
quickly to accelerator pedal movements, and steer ing is sporty and
more direct. The adap tive dampers* are adjus ted to provide a stiffer
suspension and the automatic t ransmission* sh ifts at higher RPMs.
The setting is ideal for sporty driving .
INDIVIDUAL*
You can adap t this mode to your personal needs in the
MMI* =>
page 149.

Transmission Ill _______________ ___.
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unnecessarily
on hills . Th e transmission will shift down to a lower gear when the
driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This makes use
of the braking effect of the engine without the need to shift down
manually .•

Switching to manual shift program
-Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display.
To upshift
- Push the selector lever forward to the plus position 0

To downshift
- Push the lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automat ica lly shift into the
next gear before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when accelerating, tiptr onic will automat­
ically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the dr iver sh ifts i nto 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driving down a
steep incline , tiptronic will downshift from the selected gear into the
next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear , based on road speed and
eng ine RPM. Automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you
apply the throttle again.
[ i ] Tips
• When you shif t into the next lower gear, the transmission will
downshift on ly when there is no possibility of over-revving the
engine.
• When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will shift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
• tiptronic is inoperative when the transmission is in the fail-safe
mode. •

console can cause the sensors in the buckle to send the wrong
information to the ele ctroni c control module and prevent the

• Always make sure that nothing can interfere with the safety
belt buckles and that they a re not obstru cted .

The knee airbag for the driver is located in the instrume nt panel

passenger's knees and upper and lower thigh areas as a supplement

Besides the ir normal safety function, safety be lts work to help keep

part of the overall occ upant restra int system in your veh icle . Always

Notice about data recorded by
vehicle control modu Les
Your vehicle is not equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR),
installed by some manufacturers for the express purpose of
capturing data for retrieval after an accident or crash event. EDR's are
sometimes called "crash recorders".
Some state laws restrict the retrieval or downloading of data stored
by ED R's that were installed in a vehicle for the express purpose of
retrieving data after an accident or crash event without the owner's
consent.
Although your vehicle is not equipped with an EDR, it is equipped with
a number of e lectronic control modules for various vehicle systems
such as, for example, eng ine function, emission control, as well as for
the airbags and safety belts.
These electronic control modules also record vehicle-related data
during normal vehicle operation for diagnostic and repair purposes .
The recording capacity of the electronic control modu les is limited to
data (no sound is recorded) and only a sma ll amount of data is actu­
ally recorded over a very limited period of time and stored when a
system fault or other condition is sensed by a control unit. Some of
the data then stored may relate to vehicle speed, direction, braking
as well as restraint system use and performance in the event of a
crash or other condition. Stored data can only be read and down­
loaded with special equipment .•

ESP is designed to he lp you maintain vehicle control in situations
where the car approaches the limits of "grip", especially when accel­
erat ing and cornering. ESP reduces the risk of skidding and improves
stability under all road conditions.
