Description
The air conditioner is fully automatic and is designed to
maintain a comfortable and uniform climate inside the
vehicle.
We recommend the following settings:
- Set the temperature to 75 °F (+23 °C).
- Press the
[AUTO) button.
With this setting, you attain maximum comfort in the least amount
of time. Change this setting, as desired, to meet your personal needs.

The climate controls are a combination
of heating, ventilation and
coo ling systems, which automatically red uce humidity and cool the
air inside your vehicle .
The climate control automatically maintains a temperature once it
has been set. The temperature of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air volume) and air distribution are also automatically adjusted. The
system a lso takes into account strong sunsh ine so that man ual
adjustment is not necessary. So in almost all cases,
automa tic mo de
offers the best condit ions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year~
page 104.
Please note the following:
T urn on the a ir cond itioner to reduce humidity in the vehicle. This also
prevents the windows from fogging up.
When the outside temperature is high and the air is very humid,
condensati on from the evaporator may drip under the vehicle. This is
normal and does not indicate a leak .
If the outside temperature is low, the fan normally only switches to a
higher speed once the engine coolant has warmed up sufficiently.
T he air conditioner temporari ly switches off when you drive off from
a standstill using full throttle to save engine power.
T he compressor also switches off if the coolant temperature is too
high, so that the engine can be adequately cooled under extreme
loads.
Du st a nd p ollen filt er
The dust and pollen filter (a combined particle fi lter and activated
charcoal filter) reduces or prevents outside a ir po llution (dust, or
pollen) from entering the vehicle.
T he dust and pollen filter must be changed at the intervals specified
in your Maintenance booklet, so that the air conditioner can properly
work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with a high degree of air pollution,
the filter may need to be changed more frequently than specified in .,.

Rear air vents
The rear air vents are located in the center console.
- Rotate the thumbwheel to open and close the vents .
- To adjust the direction of the airflow from the outlet,
move the tab in the center of the outlet in the desired
direction . The direction of the air delivered from the vents
can be adjusted horizontally and vertically.
The air vents are actuated either automatically or manually
depending on the operating mode selected. Heated or unheated
fresh air, or cooled air flows from the vents .
The air vents to heat the rear footwell are located under the front
seats.

If the climate control is operating in cooling mode, air flows primarily
from the vents in the center console. To achieve adequate cooling,
you should never close these vents completely. •

Economical use of the climate control
system
Economical use of the climate control system helps save
fuel.
When the climate control system is working in cooling mode,
engine performance is reduced and fuel consumption is
affected. To keep the time the climate control system is on as

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the ignition
is turned on . To move the lever from these positions the driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the following
warning appears in the instrument cluster display when the selector
is in
P and N:
When stationary apply footbrake while selecting gear
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to D). The locking
element will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutral) for
more than approximately 1 second, without the brake pedal being
pressed .
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N position.
Interlock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into ce rtain positions. Pressing this button deac
tivates the selector lever lock. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different positions . The positions are
highlighted in the illustration ~
page 153, fig. 147.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the selector lever
is in the
P park position . When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the
P position. •

Kick-down
The kick-down feature allows the vehicle to generate
maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at full throttle, the transmission will select a lower
gear ratio based on vehicle speed and engine RPM . The engine RPM will be controlled to produce maximum vehicle acceleration as
long
as you continue to press the accelerator pedal beyond this resistance
point .
& WARNING
Be careful when using the kick-down feature on slippery roads.
Rapid acceleration may cause the vehicle to skid. •

Dynamic shift program (DSP)
The automatic transmission is electronically controlled.
The transmission is self adapting and will automatically select the
best shift program suited to the driving conditions and driving style .
The transmission will select one of the
economy programs when you
drive at a steady speed or a gradually changing speed without heavy
acceleration . This achieves optimum fuel efficiency, with early
upshifting and delayed downshifting.
The transmission will automatically select the
sporty shift programs
when you drive at higher speeds, or with heavy acceleration and
frequently changing speeds. Upshifts are delayed to make full use of
engine power . Downshifting takes place at higher engine speeds than
in the economy programs.
The selection of the most suitable shift program is a continuous,
automatic process . The driver can also make the transmission switch
to a sporty program by
quickly pressing down the gas pedal.
This causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to achieve rapid acceleration, e.g. for quickly passing another vehicle. You do
not need to press the gas pedal into the kick -down range. After the
transmission has upshifted, the original program is selected
according to your driving style.
An additional shift program allows the automatic transmission to
select the proper gear for uphill and downhill gradients.

This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unnecessarily
on hills . Th e transmission will shift down to a lower gear when the
driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This makes use
of the braking effect of the engine without the need to shift down
manually .•

-Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display.
To upshift
- Push the selector lever forward to the plus position 0

When accelerating, the transmission will automat ica lly shift into the
next gear before the engine reaches its maximum RPM.
If you apply a light throttle when accelerating, tiptr onic will automat
ically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the dr iver sh ifts i nto 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driving down a
steep incline , tiptronic will downshift from the selected gear into the
next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear , based on road speed and
eng ine RPM. Automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you
apply the throttle again.

• When you shif t into the next lower gear, the transmission will
downshift on ly when there is no possibility of over-revving the
engine.
• When the kick-down comes on, the transmission will shift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds.
• tiptronic is inoperative when the transmission is in the fail-safe
mode. •

Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equippe d with four tie
d o w ns to secu re lu ggage and other i tems.

In a c oll ision, t he laws of physics mean that eve n small er item s tha t
are loose in the vehicle will become heavy missiles that can cause
s er iou s injury. Ite ms i n t he vehi cle p osses s ene rgy w hich vary w it h
vehicle speed and the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is th e most
sig nifi ca nt fa ctor.
For examp le, in a frontal collis ion at a speed of 30 mph (4 8 km/h) ,
the forces acting on a 10- lb (4.5 kg) object are a bout 20 times the
normal weig ht o f th e ite m. Th is mea ns that t he weight of t he ite m
wou ld s uddenly be abo ut 200 lbs. (90 kg) . You can imagine the inju
r ies tha t a 200 lbs . (9 0 kg) item fly ing freely throug h the pa ssenge r
compartment could cause in a collision like this.
& WARNING
Weak , damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal inju ry.
• Always use suitable mounting straps and properly secure items
to the tie-downs in the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward as dangerous missiles.

• When the rear seat backrest is folded down, always u se suit
able mounting straps and properly secure items to the tie-downs

The engine needs to be run-in during the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 km) .
For the first 600 miles (1,000 kilometers):
-Do not use full throttle .
- Do not drive at engine speeds that are more than 2/3 of
t h e m axim um permitted RPM .
From 600 to 1,000 miles (1,000 to 1,500
kilometers):
-Speeds can gradually be inc reased to t he max imu m

Dur ing the break-in period, you sho uld avoid putti ng severe loads on
the brakes. Severe loads include, for example, sud den ha rd brak ing,
i n part icula r a t very high s peed s or, for e xam ple, on moun tain passes.
& WARNING
New brake pads don't have the best stopping power and must be
" broken-in " during the initial 100 to 150 miles (150 to 200 kilo
meters ) of normal city driving . You can compensate for this by
p ressing the brake pedal more firmly . This also applies later when
new pad s are installed .•
Avoid damaging the vehicle
Whe n yo u are d riving on poor ro ad s, or ove r curbs, steep r amps, etc.,
ma ke ce rtain that low -lying parts such as spoilers and exhaust system
p arts do not bo ttom out and ge t damage d.
Th is is espec ia lly true for veh icles with low-slung chass is (sports
chassis)* and fully loaded vehicles .

Driving and environment
The catalytic converter is an effic ient ''clean-up" dev ice built into the
ex hau st system of the ve hicle. The c ata ly tic converter bu rns many of
the pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are released into the
atmosphere.
T he exclusive use of unleaded fuel is c rit ical ly import ant for the life of
the cata lytic converter and proper funct ioning of the eng ine.
& WARNING
• Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas where the hot
e xhaust system may come in contact with dry grass, brush, fuel
spill or other material which can cause a fi re.
• Do not apply additional undercoating or rustproofing on or
near the e xhaust man ifold , exhaust pipes , catalytic converte r or
heat shields . During driving, the substance used for undercoating
could overheat and cause a fire.

• Be aware that j ust one tank filling with leaded fuel will already
seriously degrade the performance of the ca talytic conve rter.
• Do not exceed the correct engine oil level =>
page 279.
• Do not dr ive until the fuel tan k becomes complete ly empty . The
engine could misfire . Unburned fuel cou ld also get into the exha ust
system and th is cou ld cause the catalyt ic converter to overheat .
• Do not tu rn o ff the igni tion while t he vehi cle is moving.
• Do not contin ue to operate your vehicle under these conditions, as

overheat ing of the converter, requir ing its replacement.

- Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with
the se rvice recommendations in your Wa rranty

booklet. -
Lack of proper maintenance as well as improper use of the
veh icle w ill impair the f unc tion of the emiss io n con trol sys te m an d
co uld lead to damage.
<£> For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emiss ion Control System is operating p roperly, the
exhaust gas can have a s ulfur -like exhaust gas smell under some
operat ing states . This depends on the sulfur content of the fu el being
used. Using a different brand of fuel may help, or filling the tank with
lead -free supe r grade gasoline. •
