tighten the bolt to the specified torque. To change the final gear oil
1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Remove the final gear case guard by remov-
ing the bolts.
3. Place an oil pan under the final gear case to
collect the used oil.

EBU23686Cleaning the air filter element The air filter element should be cleaned at the in-
tervals specified in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart. Clean or, if necessary, replace
the air filter element more frequently if you are
riding in unusually wet or dusty areas.TIPThere is a check hose at the bottom of the air filter
case. If dust or water collects in this hose, empty
the hose and clean the air filter element and air fil-
ter case.
1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Remove the seat. (See page 4-11.)
3. Remove the air filter case cover by unhooking
the holders. Tightening torque:

8 6. Clean the sponge material with water or sol-
vent. WARNING! When using solvent to
clean the sponge material, always use
parts cleaning solvent or water. Never use
low-flash-point solvents or gasoline to
clean the sponge material because the en-
gine could catch fire or explode.
[EWB01951]
7. Squeeze the excess water or solvent out of
the sponge material and let it dry. NOTICE:
Do not twist the sponge material when
squeezing it. Do not apply oil to the
sponge material.
[ECB00471]
8. Check the sponge material and replace it if
damaged.
9. Tap the air filter element lightly to remove
most of the dust and dirt. Blow out the remain-
ing dirt with compressed air as shown. If the
air filter element is damaged, replace it.

EBU29840Checking the brake fluid level Insufficient brake fluid may allow air to enter the
brake system, possibly causing it to become inef-
fective.
Before riding, check that the brake fluid is above
the minimum level mark and replenish if neces-
sary. A low brake fluid level may indicate worn
brake pads and/or brake system leakage. If the
brake fluid level is low, be sure to check the brake
pads for wear and the brake system for leakage.
Observe these precautions:When checking the fluid level, make sure that
the top of the brake fluid reservoir is level.
Use only the recommended quality brake fluid,
otherwise the rubber seals may deteriorate,
causing leakage and poor braking performance.Refill with the same type of brake fluid. Mixing
fluids may result in a harmful chemical reaction
and lead to poor braking performance.Be careful that water does not enter the brake
fluid reservoir when refilling. Water will signifi-
cantly lower the boiling point of the fluid and may
result in vapor lock.Brake fluid may deteriorate painted surfaces or
plastic parts. Always clean up spilled fluid imme-
diately. As the brake pads wear, it is normal for the brake
fluid level to gradually go down. However, if the
brake fluid level goes down suddenly, have a
Yamaha dealer check the cause.EBU24281Changing the brake fluid Have a Yamaha dealer change the brake fluid at
the intervals specified in the TIP after the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart. In addition,

8 have the oil seals of the brake master cylinder and
calipers as well as the brake hoses replaced at the
intervals listed below or whenever they are dam-
aged or leaking.
Oil seals: Replace every two years.Brake hoses: Replace every four years.EBU24394Checking the front brake lever free play The brake lever free play must be checked at the
intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart. The brake lever should have no
free play as shown. If there is free play, have a
Yamaha dealer check the brake system.
EBU24574Adjusting the brake pedal position,
free play and the rear brake lever free
play The brake pedal position and free play and the
brake lever free play must be checked and, if nec-
essary, adjusted at the intervals specified in the
periodic maintenance and lubrication chart.TIPAlways perform this maintenance completely in
the following order whenever adjusting the rear
brake. Before adjusting the brake lever free play and
the brake pedal free play and position, check the
rear brake shoes for wear.1.Adjusting the brake pedal position
The top of the brake pedal should be posi-
tioned 43.0–53.0 mm (1.69–2.09 in) above
the top of the footboard bracket. If the position
is incorrect, adjust it as follows.

8a. Remove the footboard. (See “Engine oil”
on page 8-11 for removal and installation
procedures.)
b. Loosen the locknuts at the brake pedal.
c. Turn the brake pedal position adjusting
bolt at the brake pedal in direction (a) to
raise the brake pedal, and in direction (b)
to lower it.
d. Tighten the locknuts at the brake pedal.
2.Adjusting the brake pedal free playThe brake pedal free play should measure
20.0–30.0 mm (0.79–1.18 in) as shown. If the
free play is incorrect, adjust it as follows.
a. Fully loosen the brake lever free play ad-
justing nut on the brake cable at the rear
wheel hub.
b. Turn the brake pedal free play adjusting
nut on the brake rod at the rear wheel hub
in direction (a) to increase the free play,
and in direction (b) to decrease it.

8 The brake light switch for the brake pedal can be
adjusted as follows, but the other brake light
switches should be adjusted by a Yamaha dealer.
1. Remove the footboard. (See “Engine oil” on
page 8-11 for removal and installation proce-
dures.)
2. Turn the adjusting nut while holding the brake
light switch in place. To make the brake light
come on earlier, turn the adjusting nut in direc-
tion (a). To make the brake light come on lat-
er, turn the adjusting nut in direction (b).
3. Install the footboard.
EBU24803Adjusting the clutch free play The clutch free play must be adjusted periodically.
Adjust the free play as follows.
1. Remove the footboard. (See “Engine oil” on
page 8-11 for removal and installation proce-
dures.)
2. Loosen the locknut.
3. Slowly turn the clutch adjusting screw in direc-
tion (a) until resistance is felt, and then turn it
