3 Turbocharger operation
N00537300048
TurbochargerThe turbocharger increases engine power by pushing large
amounts of air into the engine’s cylinders. The finned parts
inside the turbocharger turn at extremely high speeds and are
subjected to extremely high temperatures. They are lubricated
by engine oil and cooled by engine oil and coolant. If the
engine oil is not replaced at the specified intervals, the bearings
may seize or emit abnormal noise.
CAUTION
!
Do not run the engine at high speeds (for example,
by revving it or by accelerating rapidly) immedi-
ately after starting it.
Do not stop the engine immediately after high-speed
or uphill driving. First allow the engine to idle to
give the turbocharger a chance to cool down.
To avoid engine and/or turbocharger damage, use
only fully synthetic engine oil for this vehicle.
DO NOT use conventional petroleum based motor
oil or “blends” of conventional oil and synthetic oil.
Refer to “Recommended engine oil viscosity” on
page 7-9.

If you cannot find oils with the ILSAC certification symbol,
use an API classification SM or higher oil with the following
label.
This mark appears on the top of the oil container and tells you
two important things about the oil.
Recommended engine oil viscosity
N00955000054
Use engine oil with the proper thickness for the outdoor tem-
peratures where you will be driving.NOTE
DO NOT use conventional petroleum based motor oil.
Using conventional motor oil may cause engine or turbo-
charger damage.
DO NOT used “blends” of conventional oil and synthetic
oil.
Use ONLY fully synthetic engine oils displaying ILSAC
certification symbol or conforming to the API classifica-
tion SM or higher. If the correct oil is not used, any oil-
related engine or turbocharger failure, along with any
peripheral engine or powertrain damage, will not be cov-
ered by your vehicle warranty.
