To make your vehicle more visible to othe r dr
ivers, the headlights turn on automati-
cally (at a reduced intensity) whenever the hy
brid system is started and the parking
brake is released. Daytime running ligh ts are not designed for use at night.
For the U.S.A.: Daytime running lights can be turned off by operating the switch.
■Headlight control sensor
■Automatic light off system
●When the headlights come on: The headligh ts and tail lights turn off 30 seconds
after a door is opened and closed if the “POWER” switch is turned to ACCES -
SORY mode or turned off. (The lights turn off immediately if on the key is
pressed after all the doors are locked.)
●When only the tail lights come on: The tail lights turn off automatically if the
“POWER” switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or turned off and the
driver’s door is opened.
To turn the lights on again, turn the “POWER” s
witch to ON mode, or turn the light
switch off once and then back to or .
The sensor may not function properly if an
object is placed on the sensor, or anything
that blocks the sensor is affixed to the wind-
shield. 
Doing so interferes with the sensor detecting
the level of ambient light and may cause the
automatic headlight system to malfunction.

Hill-start assist control
■Hill-start assist control can be operated when
●The shift position is in a position other than P.
●The parking brake is not applied.
●The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
■Hill-start assist control
●While hill-start assist control is operating, the brakes remain automatically
applied after the driver releases the brak e pedal. The stop lights and the high
mounted stoplight turn on.
●Hill-start assist control operates for about 2 seconds after the brake pedal is
released.
●If the slip indicator does not flash and the buzzer does not sound when the brake
pedal is further depressed, slightly redu ce the pressure on the brake pedal (do
not allow the vehicle to roll backward) and then firmly depress it again. If the sys -
tem still does not operate, check if th e
operating conditions explained above
have been met.
Hill-start assist control helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards
when starting on an incline or slippery slope.
To engage hill-start assist con -
trol, further depress the brake
pedal when the v

stopped completely.
A buzzer will sound once to
indicate the system is activated.
The slip indicator will also start

■Hill-start assist control buzzer
●When hill-start assist control is activated, the buzzer will sound once.
●In the following situations, hill-start assist control will be canceled and the
buzzer will sound twice.
• No attempt is made to drive the vehi cle within approximately 2 seconds of
releasing the brake pedal.
•Push the P position switch.
• The parking brake is applied.
• The brake pedal is depressed again.
• The brake pedal has been depressed for more than approximately 3 minutes.
■If the slip indicator comes on
It may indicate a malfunction in th e system. Contact your Lexus dealer.
CAUTION
■Hill-start assist control
●Do not overly rely on hill-start assist cont rol. Hill-start assist control may not oper-
ate effectively on extremely steep inclines or roads covered in ice.
●Do not use hill-start assist control to stop or park the vehicle on an incline. Doing
so may cause an accident.

When driving
Selecting tire chains
Use the correct tire chain size when mounting the tire chains. Chain size
is regulated for each tire size.
Side chain:0.12 in. (3 mm) in diameter
Cross chain:
0.16 in. (4 mm) in diameter
Regulations on the use of tire chains
Regulations regarding the use of tire chains vary depending on location
and type of road. Always check local regulations before installing chains.
■When parking the vehicle
Park the vehicle and push the P position switch and block the wheel
under the vehicle without setting the parking brake. The parking
brake may freeze up, preventing it from being released.
■Tire chain installation
Observe the following precautions when installing and removing chains:
●Install and remove tire chains in a safe location.
●Install tire chains on the front tires only. Do not install tire chains on the rear tires.
●Install tire chains on front tires as tightly as possible. Retighten chains after driv -
ing 1 /4 
1/2 mile (0.5  1.0 km).
●Install tire chains following the instru ctions provided with the tire chains.

CAUTION
■When raising your vehicle
Make sure to observe the following precautions to reduce the possibility of death or
serious injury:
●Do not use the jack that was supplied with your vehicle.
●Do not put any part of your body underneath the vehicle when it is supported
only by the floor jack. 
Always use automotive jack stands on a solid, level surface.
●Do not start the hybrid system while the vehicle is supported by the floor jack.
●Stop the vehicle on level, firm ground, fi rmly set the parking brake and push the P
position switch.
●Make sure to set the floor jack properly at the jack point. 
Raising the vehicle with an improperly positioned floor jack will damage the vehi-
cle and may cause the vehicle to fall off the floor jack.
●Do not raise the vehicle while someone is in the vehicle.
●When raising the vehicle, do not place an y object on top of or underneath the
floor jack.
●Lift up the vehicle using a floor jack such as
the one shown in the illustration.

CAUTION
■Caution while towing
●Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle. 
Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which place excessive stress on
the emergency towing eyelets and the cables or chains.
●Do not turn off the power switch. 
This may lead to accidents as th e parking lock will be engaged.
●If the hybrid system is off, the power assist for the brakes and steering will not
function, making steering and braking more difficult.
■Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that the towing eyelets are installed securely. 
If not securely installed, the towing eyel ets may come loose during towing. This may
lead to accidents that cause serious injury or even death.
