o If the interior of the car is hot when
you first get in, open the windows for a few minutes to expel the hot air.
o When you are using the air condi-
tioning system, keep all windowsclosed to keep hot air out.
o When moving slowly, as in heavy
traffic, shift to a lower gear. Thisincreases engine speed, which in turn increases the speed of the air conditioning compressor.
o On steep grades, turn the air condi- tioning off to avoid the possibility ofthe engine over-heating.
o During winter months or in periods when the air conditioning is not usedregularly, run the air conditioningonce every month for a few min- utes. This will help circulate the lubricants and keep your system inpeak operating condition. INSIDE OF A VEHICLE

CAUTION:

FM broadcasts are transmitted at high frequency and do not bend to followthe earth's surface. Because of this, FM broadcasts generally begin to fade at short distances from the station.Also, FM signals are easily affected by buildings, mountains, or other obstruc- tions. These can result in certain lis-tening conditions which might lead you to believe a problem exists with your radio. The following conditions arenormal and do not indicate radio trouble:
AM broadcasts can be received atgreater distances than FM broadcasts. This is because AM radio waves are transmitted at low frequency. Theselong, low frequency radio waves can follow the curvature of the earth rather than travelling straight out into theatmosphere. In addition, they curve around obstructions so that they can provide better signal coverage.

AM and FM radio signals are broadcast from transmitter towers located around your city. They are intercepted by the radio antenna on your car. This signal isthen received by the radio and sent to your car speakers. When a strong radio signal has reachedyour vehicle, the precise engineering of your audio system ensures high quality reproduction. However, in some casesthe signal coming to your vehicle is not strong and clear. This can be due to factors such as the distance from theradio station, closeness of other strong radio stations or the presence of build- ings, bridges or other large obstructionsin the area.

Towing Hook
CAUTION:
If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground, it can be towed only from the front. Be surethat the transaxle is in neutral. Do not tow at speeds greater than 50 km/h (30 mph) and for more than 25km (15 miles). Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the key in the "ACC" posi-tion. A driver must be in the towed vehicle to operate the steering and brakes.!
(3)Attach a tow cable, chain or strap to
the towing hook on the front bumper.
For emergency towing when no com- mercial tow vehicle is available. Do not attempt to tow your vehicle in thismanner on any unpaved surface. This could result in serious damage to your car.Nor should towing be attempted if the wheels, drive train, axles, steering or brakes are damaged. Before towing,be sure the transaxle is in neutral and the key is in "ACC" (with the engine off) or in the "ON" position (with the enginerunning). A driver must be in the towed car to steer it and operate the brakes. (1)Open the towing cover to push it
with your finger.
(2)To mount the towing hook, rotate it clockwise.
CAUTION
It should be tightened firmly with your fingers until there is no more play in the towing hole. Towinghook is located in the jack case on the spare tire.

5- 8 VEHICLE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

o Engine Oil and Filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the car is being driven in severe conditions,more frequent oil and filter changes are required. F060B01A-AAT
o Drive Belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil and replace if necessary. Drive beltsshould be checked periodically for proper tension and adjusted as nec- essary. After installing a new filter, run the
engine for several minutes, and checkfor leaks at the connections. Fuel fil-ters should be installed by trained technicians.

o Fuel Filter A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, dam- age the emission system and cause hard starting. If an excessive amountof foreign matter accumulates in the fuel tank, the filter may require re- placement more frequently.
!WARNING (Diesel only):
Never work on injection system with
engine running or within 30 sec- onds after shutting off engine. High pressure pump, rail, injectors and high pressure pipes are subjectedto high pressure even after the en- gine has been switched off. The fuel jet produced by fuel leaks maycause serious injury, if it contacts with the body. People using pace- makers should not move closerthan 30cm to the ECU or wiring harness within the engine room with the engine running, since the high currents in the Common Rail sys-tem produce considerable magnetic fields.

Check the power steering pump and

Check the pads for excessive wear,

o Brake Hoses and Lines Visually check for proper installation, chafing, cracks, deterioration and any leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately. F070G02A-AAT
o Brake Fluid Check brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" marks onthe side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4. F070H01A-AAT
o Rear Brake Drums/Linings
Parking Brake
Check the rear brake drums and lin- ings for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, broken parts, and excessive wear. Inspect the parking brake system in-cluding the parking brake lever and cables. For detailed service proce- dures, refer to the Shop Manual.

WARNING:
It is always better to check the transaxle oil level when the engine is cool or cold. If the engine is hot, you should exercise great cautionto avoid burning yourself on hot engine or exhaust parts.!

Transaxle lubricant in the manual transaxle should be checked at those intervals specified in the vehicle main-tenance schedule in Section 5. Recommended Oil Use only HYUNDAI GENUINE PARTS MTF 75W/85 (API GL-4) in the manual transaxle. Manual Transaxle Oil Capacity The oil capacity of the manual transaxle is 2.15 liters for gasoline engine and 2.0 liters for diesel engine.
!WARNING:
o Windshield washer fluid agents contain some amounts of alcohol and can be flammable under cer- tain circumstances. Do not allow sparks or flame to contact thewasher fluid or the washer fluid reservoir. Damage to the vehicle or its occupants could occur.
o Windshield washer fluid is poi- sonous to humans and animals.Do not drink windshield washerfluid. Serious injury or death could occur. NOTE: It is recommended that the manual transaxle fluid should be checked by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

Hyundai vehicle is equipped with a monolith type three-way catalytic con- verter to reduce the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides con-tained in the exhaust gas. Exhaust gases passing through the catalytic converter may cause it to operate at avery high temperature. The introduc- tion of large amounts of unburned gaso- line into the exhaust may cause thecatalytic converter to overheat and create a fire hazard. This risk may be reduced by observing the following:

About the Catalytic Converter
Exhaust gases passing through the
catalytic converter cause it to operate at very high temperatures. As a re- sult, the introduction of large amountsof unburned gasoline may cause it to overheat and create a fire hazard. This can be avoided by observing thefollowing:
o Use unleaded fuel only.
o Maintain your engine in good con-
dition. Extremely high converter temperatures can result from im- proper operation of the electrical,ignition or fuel injection systems.
H020D01S-GAT CATALYTIC CONVERTER ; For a diesel engine Hyundai vehicle is equipped with oxi- dation type catalytic converter to re-duce the carbon monoxide, hydrocar- bons and particulate contained in the exhaust gas.
o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks,
or is hard to start, take your car toyour Hyundai dealer as soon aspossible and have the difficulty cor- rected.
o Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If your run out of gasoline, it could cause the engine to misfireand result in excessive loading of the catalytic converter.
o Avoid idling the engine for periods longer than 10 minutes.
o Your Hyundai should not be either pushed or pulled to get it started.This can cause the catalytic con- verter to overload.
o Do not park, idle, or drive your vehicle over any combustible mate-rial such as grass, paper, leaves orrags. As these materials could come in contact with the catalytic con- verter and could cause a fire.
o Do not touch the catalytic converter
or any other part of the exhaustsystem while the engine is running as it is very hot and could result in burns.
o Remember that your Hyundai dealer is your best source of assistance.
