Adjusting exterior lighting

Coming home*
The coming home function ensures that after
turning off the igni ­
tion and opening the driver's door
the vehicle periphery is illumi ­
nated in the dark. In addition, the front fog lights, the tail lights and
the license plate light are turned on. The power-on time can be set
for a period from
O (off) to 30 or 60 seconds.
Leaving home*
The leaving home functions ensures that
when unlocking, the
vehicle periphery is illuminated in the dark. In addition, the front fog
lights, the tail lights and the license plate light are turned on. This
function can be turned on and off.
Auto headlights*
When the light switch is in the AUTO~
page 53 position, the switch­
on point of the lights can be changed in the automatic driving light
function.

Clear vision
Daytime running lights
The daytime running lights can be turned on or off using this func ­
tion. If the function is active, the daytime running lights are turned
on automatically when the ignition is switched on.

The coming home/leaving home function * is available only with the
switch in the AUTO position . •
Daytime running lights
When you turn on the ignition the daytime running lights
will come on automatically .
USA models
The daytime running lights are activated when the light switch
~ page 53, fig. 51 is in the O position or the AUTO position (only in
daylight conditions). The daytime running lights function can be
turned on and off in the radio or
MMI* menu Exterior lighting
~ page 55.
Canada models
The daytime running lights are activated when the light switch
~ page 53, fig. 51 is in the O position, ooo: position or the AUTO posi­
tion (only in daylight conditions). The daytime running lights func­
tion cannot be turned off.
& WARNING
Never use daytime running lights to see where you are going. They
are not bright enough and will not let you see far enough ahead for
safety, especially at dusk or when it is dark. Be aware of changes
in outside light conditions when you are driving and respond by
switching on your low beams

Instrument lighting
The basic brightness of the illumination for the instru ­
ments, the center console and the display can be
adjusted.
Press the knob to release it.

- Rotating the knob to the right"+" will increase the basic
brightness when it is dark.
Rotating the knob to the left" -" will decrease the basic
brightness when it is dark.
- Pressing the knob will prevent unintentiona l changes.

The instrument cluster and center console illumination (gauges and
needles) comes on when you switch on the ignition and the
vehicle headlights are off
.
Be aware of the following difference between
models built to US or Canadian specifications:
• USA models: illumination of the instrument cluster (gauges and
needles), dash and center console around the gearshift lever is
controlled by a light sensor located in the instrument panel. The
instrument panel illumination will automatically become dimmer
as the daylight fades away and eventually will go out completely
when outside light is very low. This is to remind you, the driver, to
switch on the headlights before it gets too dark.
• Canada models: instrument panel illumination will stay bright
regardless of the intensity of ambient light . Always be aware of
changes in outside light conditions while you are driving. Respond
in time to fading daylight by turning the light switch to position
gD
(or "AUTO" if your car is equipped with this feature) to turn on your
headlights. •

Xenon headlights
After starting the engine, the xenon headlights are automatically
adjusted to the load and angle of the vehicle (for example, during
acceleration and braking!. This prevents oncoming traffic from
experiencing unnecessary headlight glare from your xenon head­
lights.
If the system is not operating properly, a warning symbol in the
Auto-Check Control is displayed

• Pressing the button l~•~ l seve ral times consecutively can tr igger
the over load protection . The sun shade can only be
extended/re tracted again af ter a brief waiting period.
• The rea r window sun shade only functions when the vehicle inte ­
rio r is wa rmer than 23°F (-5°Cl. •

G) -Interva l mode. To extend/shorten the wiper inte rvals, move the
sw itc h @ to the lef t/right. In vehic les wi th a rain sensor*, the w ind­
shield wipers are activated automatically starting at a speed of
2 mph (4 km/h). The higher the sensitivity of t he rain senso r* is set
(switch @to the right), the earlier the windshield wipers react to
moisture on the windshie ld.

© -C lean the windshie ld. To eliminate wate r droplets, the wind­
shie ld wiper performs one afterwipe operation after several
seconds whi le d riving. You can switch this function off by moving
the lever to pos ition © within 10 seconds o f the afterwipe opera ­
tion. The afterwipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition
is sw itched on.
Cleaning the headlights *. The headlight washer system * only func ­
tions when the light is switched on . The headlights are automati ­
ca lly c leaned the first time and every fifth time the lever is moved to
pos ition
® · They are also cleaned every time you hold the lever in
pos ition © for longer than 2 seconds.
& WARNING
• The rain sen sor is only intended to a ssi st the driver . The driver
is still responsible for manually swit ching the wiper s on according
to the visibility conditions .
• The windshield may not be treated with water -repelling wind ­
s hield coating agents . Unfavorab le conditions , such as wetnes s,
darkness , low sun , can result in increased glare . Wiper bl ade
c hatter is also po ssible .
• Properly functioning windshield w iper blades are required for a
clear view and safe driving

• I n the case of frost, check whether the windshie ld wiper blades
are frozen to the windshield . Switching on the windshield wipers
ca n damage the wiper b lades !
• P rior to using a car wash, the windshield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in posi tion 0). This prevents un intentiona l
switching on and damage to the windshield wiper system. .,.

Automatic dimming fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated eve ry time th e ignition
is turned on . The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto d imming
is active.
When dimming is activated , the inside mirror will darken automati­
cally in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode,
the mirror surface t urns bright when:
• the inter ior light is switched on
• r everse gear is engaged.

sti ll adjust the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror. •

Automatic dimming for the outside mirrors
The outside mirrors dim at the same time as the inside mirror. When
the ignition is switched on, the mirrors automatically dim
depending on the amount of light striking the mirrors (such as head­ lights shining into the vehic le from the rear).
When the inte rior lighting is switched on and when reve rse gear is
engaged, the mirrors are switched back to their original brightness
{not dimmed) .
& WARNING

• Repeated or pr olonged e xposure to electrol yte can cause irrita ­

• Switching off the dimming function of the inside rear view

• Automatic dimming for the mirror only operates properly if the
sun shade* for the rear window is not in use or the light striking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other objects. •

may vary, depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indi­
cator light
CRUISE (US model)/ (7)0 (Canadian model) will also light up
in the instrument cluster .
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through
an active brake intervention.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise
control is in operation. You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For reasons of safety, cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you could have an accident.
• Switch the cruise control off temporarily when driving in
turning lanes, highway exits or in construction zones.
• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal causes cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the driver's acceleration.
[ i] Tips
• Vehicles with manual transmission: You can attain the set speed
only if the gear that is currently engaged will allow it, or if it does not tax the engine and allows it to run smoothly. Therefore shift into
a higher or lower gear in a timely manner.
• The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically .•
Changing speed
- Press the lever in the direction of the 0 ~ page 115,
fig. 120 or in the direction of the Q to increase or
decrease your speed. -
Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/hi by lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km/hi increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed, e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo­
rarily. The green symbol in the display turns white, the saved speed
is retained .•
Pre -selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
Turn on the ignition.
- Pull lever into position 1

Press the lever in the
0 or Q direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
(D. •

transmission will not upshift as soon , allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher engine speeds to achieve live­
lier acceleration.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL )
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acciden ­
tally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally.

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occupant safety
always depends on the informed and careful driver.
For your safety and the safety of your passengers, before
driving always:
-Make sure that all lights and signals are operat ing
correctly.
- Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.
- Make sure that all windows are clean and afford good
visibility to the outside.
- Secure all luggage and other items carefully =>

-Make sure that noth ing can interfere w ith the pedals.
- Adjust front seat, head restraint and mirrors correctly for your height .
- Instruct passengers to adjust the head restraints
according to their height.
- Make sure to use the right ch ild restraint correctly to

- Sit properly in your seat and make sure that your passen ­

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of the
vehicle, the driver as well as the driver's ability to concen­
trate on the road without being distracted.
The driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicle and all
of its occupants. If your ability to drive is impaired, safety
risks for everybody in the vehicle increase and you also
become a hazard to everyone else on the road =>& .There ­
fore:
Do not let yourself be distracted by passengers or by
using a cellular telephone .
NEVER drive when your driving ability is impaired (by
medications, alcohol, drugs, etc.).
- Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road and speed limits
and plain common sense .
- ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic and weather
conditions.
- Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not drive for more
than two hours at a stretch.
- Do NOT drive when you are tired, under pressure or when
you are stressed .
