COURTESY LIGHT TIMING
On certain versions, two different timed switching-on modes have
been provided to facilitate getting in/out of the car at night or with
poor lighting.
Light timing when getting into the car
The courtesy lights will turn on as follows:
❍for about 10 seconds when the front doors are unlocked;
❍for about 3 minutes when one of the doors is opened;
❍for about 10 seconds when the doors are closed.
Timing is interrupted when the ignition key is turned to MAR.
Light timing when getting out of the car
After removing the key from the ignition switch, the courtesy lights
will turn on as follows:
❍within 2 minutes from turning the engine off for about 10 sec-
onds;
❍for about 3 minutes when one of the doors is opened;
❍when one of the doors is closed for about 10 seconds.
Timing will stop automatically when the doors are locked. Switch B works as a spotlight.
Switch B positions:
❍central position (position 1): lights C and D are always off;
❍pressed to the left (position 0): light C is on;
❍pressed to the right (position 2): light D is on.
IMPORTANT Before getting out of the car, make sure that both
switches are in the central position: lights off with doors closed in
order to avoid draining the battery.
In any case, if the switch is left inadvertently in the On position,
the lights will turn off automatically 15 minutes after turning the
engine off.

FUEL CUT-OFF SYSTEM
This system intervenes in the event of a collision, activating:
❍switch off of fuel supply with resultant engine switch off;
❍automatic door lock release;
❍switch on of all lights inside the car.
The intervention of the system is indicated by a message shown
on the display.
Carefully check the car for fuel leaks, for instance in the engine
compartment, below the car or near the tank area.
After a collision, turn the ignition key to STOP to avoid draining the
battery.
If, after a collision, you smell fuel or notice leaks
from the fuel system, do not reset the system to
avoid fire risk.
To reset car operation, follow this procedure:
❍turn the ignition key to MAR;
❍activate the right-hand direction indicator;
❍deactivate the right-hand direction indicator;
❍activate the left-hand direction indicator;
❍deactivate the left-hand direction indicator;
❍activate the right-hand direction indicator;

Electric window system initialisation
The safety system must be re-initialised after disconnecting the bat-
tery or if the relevant protection fuse is blown.
Initialisation procedure:
❍fully close the window to be initialised manually;
❍after the window has reached the upper end of travel, hold the
up button pressed for at least one second.
IMPORTANT For versions/markets where provided, following the
disconnection of the power supply (replacing or disconnecting the
battery or replacing the protection fuse for the electric windows
control units), the automatic setting for the electric windows must
be reset.The reset operation should be carried out with the doors closed
according to the following procedure:
1. completely lower the driver-side window and keep the button
pressed for at least 3 seconds once the end of travel position
has been reached;
2. completely raise the driver-side window and keep the button
pressed for at least 3 seconds once the end of travel position
has been reached;
3. repeat stages 1 and 2 for the passenger-side window
4. check that the initialisation has taken place correctly by check-
ing the automatic operation of the windows.
IMPORTANT With central locking on, operating the internal handle
of one of the doors will unlock all the doors. If there is no power
(blown fuse, battery disconnected, etc.) the doors can still be locked
manually. As in this case the automatic window opening function
is not available, to open or close the door with the window closed,
apply pressure to the window towards the vehicle interior (see fig.
58), to aid the passage of the window against the trim.

ENGINE FAILED STOPPING CONDITIONS
When the system is operating, due to comfort, emission control
and safety reasons, the engine could not stop in some conditions,
among which:
❍still cold engine;
❍especially cold outside temperature;
❍insufficiently charged battery;
❍operating heated rear window;
❍windscreen-wiper operating at max. speed;
❍particulate filter (DPF) regeneration in progress (only for Diesel
engines);
❍open driver's door;
❍unfastened driver's seat belt;
❍engaged reverse (for example during parking manoeuvres);
❍for versions equipped with dual zone automatic climate control
(for versions/markets, where provided), if an adequate level
of thermal comfort has not been reached or MAX-DEF func-
tion activation;
❍during the first utilization period, for the system initialisation.
In these cases, the display shows a message and - for those ver-
sions/markets where it has been fitted - the
Usymbol on the
display flashes.
ENGINE RESTARTING CONDITIONS
Due to comfort, emission control and safety reasons, the engine
can be restarted automatically without any intervention by the
driver, under special conditions, such as:
❍insufficiently charged battery;
❍windscreen-wiper operating at max. speed;
❍low vacuum in the braking system (for example after repeat-
ed actions on the brake pedal);
❍moving vehicle (for example while driving downhills);
❍engine stopping by Start&Stop system for over 3 minutes;
❍for versions equipped with dual zone automatic climate control
(for versions/markets where provided), to enable suitable ther-
mal comfort or MAX-DEF function activation.
With engaged gear, the engine automatic restarting is possible
only by fully pressing the clutch pedal. The driver is informed by
the displaying of a message and - for versions/markets where it
has been fitted - by the flashing of the
Usymbol on the display.
Notes
If the clutch is not pressed, after 3 minutes from the engine stop-
ping, the engine can be restarted only by the ignition key.
In case of undesired engine stopping conditions, for example as a
result of sudden clutch pedal release with engaged gear, if the
Start&Stop system is active, the engine can be restarted by fully
pressing the clutch pedal or placing the gearbox in neutral.
If temperature comfort is to be preferred, deac-
tivate the Start&Stop system to make the climate
control system work continuously

CAR INACTIVITY
(with Start&Stop system with dummy pole)
(for versions/markets where provided)
In case of vehicle inactivity conditions, pay special attention to
the disconnection of the battery power supply. The procedure must
be made by disconnecting the quick release negative terminal
A-fig. 73 from the dummy negative pole B, as the battery nega-
tive pole C has a sensor D for battery condition monitoring that
must never be disconnected (unless the battery is replaced).
CAR INACTIVITY
(with Start&Stop system without dummy pole)
(for versions/markets where provided)
In case of car inactivity, special attention must be paid due to the
disconnection of the battery power supply. Proceed as follows:
detach the connector A-fig. 74 (by pressing button B) from sen-
sor C for monitoring the battery status installed on the battery neg-
ative pole D. This sensor should never be disconnected from the
pole except if the battery is replaced.
fig. 73A0J0249m
In case of battery replacement, always contact
Alfa Romeo Authorised Service. Replace the bat-
tery using a new one of the same type (HEAVY
DUTY) and having the same specifications.
