SAFETY
BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS
Group of supplementary systems which
help you to obtain optimum braking in
complete safety in emergency situations:
- anti-lock braking system (ABS),
- electronic brake force distribution (EBFD),
- emergency braking assistance (EBA).
A n t i - l o c k b r a k i n g s y s t e m
and electronic brake force
distribution
Linked systems which improve the sta-
bility and manoeuvrability of your vehicle
when braking, in particular on poor or
slippery surfaces.
When braking in an emergency,
p r e s s v e r y fi r m l y w i t h o u t r e l e a s i n g
the pressure. When replacing wheels (tyres and
rims), ensure that they conform
to the manufacturer's recommen-
dations.
Operating fault
If this warning lamp comes on,
accompanied by an audible sig-
nal and a message on the mul-
tifunction screen, it indicates a
malfunction of the anti-lock braking sys-
tem which could result in loss of control
of the vehicle when braking.
If this warning lamp comes on,
together with the STOP and ABS
warning lamps, accompanied by
an audible signal and a message
on the multifunction screen, it indicates a
malfunction of the electronic brake force
distribution which could result in loss of
control of the vehicle when braking.
E m e r g e n c y b r a k i n g a s s i s t a n c e
System which, in an emergency, ena-
bles you to obtain the optimum braking
pressure more quickly, thus reducing
the stopping distance.
Activation
The anti-lock braking system comes
into operation automatically when there
is a risk of wheel lock.
Normal operation of the ABS may make
itself felt by slight vibration of the brake
pedal. Activation
It is triggered by the speed at which the
brake pedal is pressed.
The effect of this is a reduction in the
resistance of the pedal and an increase
i n b r a k i n g e f fi c i e n c y .
When braking in an emergency,
p r e s s fi r m l y w i t h o u t r e l e a s i n g t h e
pressure.
Deactivation
I f y o u r v e h i c l e i s fi t t e d w i t h t h e 1 . 6 l i t r e
THP 200 hp petrol engine, you can deac-
tivate this function; refer to the "Trajectory
control systems - § Deactivation" section.
You must stop as soon as it is safe
to do so.
In either case, contact a PEUGEOT
dealer.

ROLL-OVER BARS
System which protects all of the oc-
cupants restrained by their seat belt
should the vehicle roll over.
The roll-over bars are incorporated in
the back of the rear bench seat. Their
presence is indicated by the words
"Rollover Protection".
Activation
They are triggered simultaneously
should the vehicle roll over.
Operating fault If this warning lamp comes on
on the instrument panel, ac-
companied by an audible sig-
nal and a message on the
multifunction screen, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the
system checked. In order to guarantee the correct
operation and the deployment of
the roll-over bars if roll-over is de-
tected, the following conditions
must be complied with:
- no accessory which is not
recommended by PEUGEOT
should be in contact with or
fi x e d t o t h e r o l l - o v e r b a r s ,
- no object should block or stop the movement of the roll-over bars,
- the area above the roll-over bars should be clear of any objects.

The driver must ensure that passen-
gers use the seat belts correctly and
that they are all restrained securely
before setting off.
Wherever you are seated in the ve-
hicle, always fasten your seat belt,
even for short journeys.
Do not invert the seat belt buckles as
t h e y w i l l n o t f u l fi l t h e i r r o l e f u l l y .
T h e s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n i n e r t i a
reel permitting automatic adjustment
of the length of the strap to your size.
The seat belt is stored automatically
when not in use.
Before and after use, ensure that the
seat belt is reeled in correctly.
The lower part of the strap must be
positioned as low as possible on the
pelvis.
The upper part must be positioned in
the hollow of the shoulder.
T h e i n e r t i a r e e l s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a n a u -
tomatic locking device which comes
into operation in the event of a colli-
sion, emergency braking or if the ve-
hicle rolls over. You can release the
d e v i c e b y p u l l i n g fi r m l y o n t h e s t r a p
and releasing it so that it re-winds
slightly. In order to be effective, a seat belt
must:
- be tightened as close to the body
as possible,
- be pulled in front of you with a smooth movement, checking that
it does not twist,
- be used to restrain only one person,
- not bear any trace of cuts or fraying,
- n o t b e c o n v e r t e d o r m o d i fi e d t o avoid affecting its performance.
In accordance with current safety regu-
lations, all repairs and checks must be
carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer who
guarantees that the work is carried out
correctly.
Have your seat belts checked regularly
by a PEUGEOT dealer and particularly
if the straps show signs of damage.
Clean the seat belt straps with soapy
water or a textile cleaning product,
sold by PEUGEOT dealers.
After folding or moving a seat or rear
bench seat, ensure that the seat belt
is positioned and reeled in correctly. Recommendations for children
Use a suitable child seat if the pas-
senger is less than 12 years old or
shorter than one and a half metres.
Never use the same seat belt to se-
cure more than one person.
Never allow a child to travel on your lap.
In the event of an impact
Depending on the nature and se-
riousness of the impacts , the pre-
tensioning device may be triggered
before and independently of the air-
bags. Triggering of the pre-tensioners
is accompanied by a slight discharge
of harmless smoke and a noise, due
to the activation of the pyrotechnic
cartridge incorporated in the system.
In all cases, the airbag warning lamp
comes on.
Following an impact, have the seat
belts system checked, and if neces-
sary replaced, by a PEUGEOT dealer.

Stopping the vehicle
Before switching off the engine, you
can engage position P or N to place the
g e a r b o x i n n e u t r a l .
In both cases, apply the parking brake
to immobilise the vehicle. Operating fault
When the ignition is on, the
lighting of this warning lamp,
accompanied by an audible sig-
nal and a message in the mul-
t i f u n c t i o n s c r e e n , i n d i c a t e s a g e a r b o x
malfunction.
I n t h i s c a s e , t h e g e a r b o x s w i t c h e s t o
emergency mode and is locked in 3rd
gear. You may feel a substantial knock
when changing from P to R and from N
to R . This will not cause any damage to
t h e g e a r b o x .
D o n o t e x c e e d a s p e e d o f 6 0 m p h
( 1 0 0 k m / h ) , l o c a l s p e e d r e s t r i c t i o n s p e r -
mitting.
Have it checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
This warning lamp may also come on if
a door is opened.
There is a risk of damage to the
g e a r b o x :
- if you press the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time,
- if you force the lever from posi- tion P to another position when
t h e b a t t e r y i s fl a t .
Manual operation
Select position M for sequential
c h a n g i n g o f t h e f o u r o r s i x g e a r s .
Push the lever towards the + sign to
change up a gear.
Pull the lever towards the - sign to
change down a gear.
D disappears and the gears
engaged appear in succes-
sion on the instrument panel.
If the engine spped is too low
or too high, the gear selected
fl a s h e s f o r a f e w s e c o n d s , t h e n t h e a c -
tual gear engaged is displayed.
It is possible to change from position D
( a u t o m a t i c ) t o p o s i t i o n M ( m a n u a l ) a t
any time.
When the vehicle is stationary or mov-
i n g v e r y s l o w l y , t h e g e a r b o x s e l e c t s
gear M1 automatically.
The sport and snow programmes do not
operate in manual mode. If the lever is not in position
P ,
when the driver's door is opened or
a p p r o x i m a t e l y 4 5 s e c o n d s a f t e r t h e
ignition is switched off, an audible
signal is heard and a message ap-
pears.
Return the lever to position P ;
the audible signal stops and the
message disappears.
It is only possible to change from one
gear to another if the vehicle speed and
engine speed permit; otherwise, the
g e a r b o x w i l l o p e r a t e t e m p o r a r i l y i n a u -
tomatic mode.
Invalid value during manual
operation
This symbol is displayed if a
gear is not engaged correctly
(selector between two posi-
t i o n s ) .
To limit fuel consumption when sta-
tionary for long periods with the en-
g i n e r u n n i n g ( t r a f fi c j a m . . . ) , p l a c e
the gear lever in position N and ap-
ply the parking brake.
