Front seat belts
T h e f r o n t s e a t b e l t s a r e fi t t e d w i t h a
p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m a n d f o r c e l i m i t e r .
T h i s s y s t e m i m p r o v e s s a f e t y i n t h e f r o n t
s e a t s i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t i m p a c t .
D e p e n d i n g o n t h e s e r i o u s n e s s o f t h e
i m p a c t , t h e p r e t e n s i o n i n g s y s t e m i n -
stantly tightens the seat belt against
t h e b o d y o f t h e o c c u p a n t . Fastening
P u l l t h e b e l t d o w n i n f r o n t o f y o u
i n a s t e a d y m o v e m e n t , m a k i n g
s u r e t h a t i t d o e s n o t b e c o m e
twisted.
P r e s s t h e f a s t e n i n g i n t o i t s b u c k l e .
C h e c k t h a t i t i s p r o p e r l y s e c u r e d
a n d t h a t t h e a u t o m a t i c l o c k i n g
m e c h a n i s m o p e r a t e s c o r r e c t l y
b y p u l l i n g s h a r p l y o n t h e b e l t
strap.
T h e l a p s t r a p s h o u l d b e p o s i -
tioned as low down as possible in
the lap and as tight as possible.
T h e d i a g o n a l s t r a p s h o u l d b e
positioned across the chest and
a w a y f r o m t h e n e c k .
E a c h b e l t h a s a r e e l t h a t a d j u s t s i t s
l e n g t h a u t o m a t i c a l l y t o t h e g i r t h o f
t h e s e a t o c c u p a n t .
The pretensioning seat belts are
active when the ignition is on.
T h e f o r c e l i m i t e r r e d u c e s t h e p r e s -
s u r e o f t h e s e a t b e l t a g a i n s t t h e
c h e s t o f t h e o c c u p a n t , s o i n c r e a s i n g
his protection.
Reactivation
T h e s e s y s t e m s a r e r e a c t i v a t e d a u -
t o m a t i c a l l y e a c h t i m e t h e i g n i t i o n i s
s w i t c h e d b a c k o n o r f r o m 3 0 m p h
( 5 0 k m / h ) .
Press the "ESP OFF" b u t t o n a g a i n
t o r e a c t i v a t e t h e m m a n u a l l y .
Operating fault

o n , a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u -
d i b l e s i g n a l a n d a m e s s a g e

AIRBAGS
S y s t e m d e s i g n e d t o m a x i m i s e t h e
s a f e t y o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ( w i t h t h e
e x c e p t i o n o f t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s -
senger) in the event of violent col-
l i s i o n s . I t s u p p l e m e n t s t h e a c t i o n o f
t h e f o r c e - l i m i t i n g s e a t b e l t s .
I f a c o l l i s i o n o c c u r s , t h e e l e c t r o n i c
detectors record and analyse the
f r o n t a n d s i d e i m p a c t s s u s t a i n e d i n
t h e i m p a c t d e t e c t i o n z o n e s :
- i n t h e c a s e o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t ,
the airbags are triggered instant-
l y a n d p r o t e c t t h e o c c u p a n t s o f
t h e v e h i c l e ( w i t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f
t h e r e a r c e n t r e p a s s e n g e r ) ; i m -
m e d i a t e l y a f t e r t h e i m p a c t , t h e
a i r b a g s d e fl a t e r a p i d l y s o t h a t
they do not hinder visibility or the
e x i t o f t h e o c c u p a n t s ,
- i n t h e c a s e o f a m i n o r o r r e a r i m p a c t o r i n c e r t a i n r o l l - o v e r
conditions, the airbags will not
be triggered; the seat belt alone
i s s u f fi c i e n t t o p r o v i d e o p t i m u m
p r o t e c t i o n i n t h e s e s i t u a t i o n s .
The airbags do not operate when
the ignition is switched off.
T h i s e q u i p m e n t w i l l o n l y o p e r a t e
o n c e . I f a s e c o n d i m p a c t o c c u r s
( d u r i n g t h e s a m e o r a s u b s e q u e n t
accident), the airbag will not operate. Impact detection zones

c o m p a n i e d b y a s l i g h t e m i s s i o n o f
h a r m l e s s s m o k e a n d a n o i s e , d u e t o

t r i d g e i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t h e s y s t e m .
T h i s s m o k e i s n o t h a r m f u l , b u t s e n -
s i t i v e i n d i v i d u a l s m a y e x p e r i e n c e
slight irritation.

Front airbags
S y s t e m w h i c h p r o t e c t s t h e h e a d a n d
chest of the driver and front passen-
g e r i n t h e e v e n t o f a f r o n t i m p a c t .
T h e d r i v e r ' s a i r b a g i s i n c o r p o r a t e d
in the centre of the steering wheel;
t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r ' s a i r b a g i s i n c o r -
porated in the dashboard above the
g l o v e b o x .
Activation
T h e a i r b a g s a r e t r i g g e r e d s i m u l t a n e -
o u s l y , u n l e s s t h e p a s s e n g e r ' s f r o n t
airbag is deactivated, in the event of
a s e r i o u s f r o n t i m p a c t t o a l l o r p a r t o f
t h e f r o n t i m p a c t z o n e A , in the lon-
g i t u d i n a l c e n t r e l i n e o f t h e v e h i c l e o n
a h o r i z o n t a l p l a n e a n d d i r e c t e d f r o m
the front to the rear of the vehicle.
T h e f r o n t a i r b a g i n fl a t e s b e t w e e n t h e
f r o n t o c c u p a n t o f t h e v e h i c l e a n d t h e
d a s h b o a r d t o c u s h i o n t h e i r f o r w a r d
m o v e m e n t . Deactivation
T h i s w a r n i n g l a m p c o m e s o n
on the roof console display
w h e n t h e i g n i t i o n i s o n a n d u n -
til the air bag is reactivated.
T o g u a r a n t e e t h e s a f e t y o f y o u r
c h i l d , i t i s i m p e r a t i v e t h a t t h e p a s -
senger airbag is deactivated when
y o u i n s t a l l a " r e a r w a r d s - f a c i n g " c h i l d
seat on the front passenger seat.
O t h e r w i s e , t h e c h i l d w o u l d r i s k b e -
i n g s e r i o u s l y i n j u r e d o r k i l l e d i f t h e
airbag were triggered. Activation
W h e n y o u r e m o v e t h e c h i l d s e a t , t u r n
switch
1 to the "ON" position to re-
a c t i v a t e t h e a i r b a g a n d s o g u a r a n t e e
t h e s a f e t y o f y o u r f r o n t p a s s e n g e r i n
t h e e v e n t o f a n i m p a c t .
Operating fault
I f t h i s s y m b o l a p p e a r s o n
t h e i n s t r u m e n t p a n e l s c r e e n ,
a c c o m p a n i e d b y a n a u d i b l e
w a r n i n g a n d a m e s s a g e ,
contact a CITROËN dealer to have
t h e s y s t e m c h e c k e d . T h e a i r b a g s
m a y n o l o n g e r b e t r i g g e r e d i n t h e
e v e n t o f a s e r i o u s i m p a c t .
O n l y t h e f r o n t p a s s e n g e r ' s a i r b a g
can be deactivated:
with the ignition off , insert the
key in the passenger airbag de-
activation switch 1 ,
t u r n i t t o t h e "OFF" position,
t h e n , r e m o v e t h e k e y k e e p i n g
the switch in this position. I f t h i s w a r n i n g l a m p fl a s h e s ,
contact a CITROËN dealer.

ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
The electric parking brake combines
2 operational modes:
- AUTOMATIC
Automatic application when the engine stops and automatic re-
lease on use of the accelerator
(automatic operation by default),
- MANUAL
Manual application/release of the parking brake is always pos-
sible by pulling control A while
pressing the brake pedal. Automatic operation
Application with the engine off
With the vehicle stationary, the park-
ing brake
is automatically applied
when the engine is switched off.

Release
With the ignition on or the engine
running, to release the parking
brake, press on the brake pedal,
push then release control A .
The full application of the parking
b r a k e i s c o n fi r m e d b y : - warning lamp P on control
A going off,
- display of a message "parking brake released" in the instru-
ment panel screen.
If you push control A without pressing
the brake pedal, the parking brake
will not be released and the message
"Apply foot on brake" will be dis-
played on the instrument panel.
When stationary, with the en-
gine running, do not press the
accelerator pedal unneces-
sarily, as you may release the
parking brake. Maximum application
If necessary, you can utilise
maxi-
mum application of the parking
brake. It is obtained by means of a
long pull on control A , until you see
t h e m e s s a g e " M a x a p p l i c a t i o n o f t h e
handbrake" and a beep is heard.
Maximum application is essential:
- in the case of a vehicle towing a caravan or a trailer, if the au-
tomatic functions are activated
but you are applying the parking
brake manually,
- when the gradient you are parked on is variable in its effect (e.g. on
a ferry, in a lorry, during towing).
- in the case of towing, a loaded vehicle or parking on a gradient,
turn the front wheels towards the
pavement and engage a gear
when you park.
- a f t e r a m a x i m u m a p p l i c a t i o n , t h e release time will be longer. Particular situations
In certain situations (starting the en-
gine...), the parking brake can auto-
matically alter its level of application.
This is normal operation.
To advance your vehicle a few
centimetres without starting the en-
gine, but with the ignition on, press
on the brake pedal and release the
parking brake
by pushing then re-
leasing control A .
The full release of the parking brake

If the parking brake malfunctions
while applied o r i f t h e b a t t e r y i s fl a t ,
an emergency release is still pos-
sible.
To ensure correct operation of the
parking brake and therefore your
safety, the number of successive
application/release operations is
limited to eight.
I f t h i s n u m b e r i s e x c e e d e d , y o u a r e
warned by the message "Parking
brake faulty" and a warning lamp
fl a s h e s .

On sloping ground: immobilise
the vehicle by placing the chocks
(if your vehicle has them) in front
or behind the two front wheels,
against the slope
On level ground: immobilise the vehicle by placing the chocks
(if your vehicle has them) in
front and behind one of the front
wheels.
Open the lower compartment of
the centre armrest by pulling it.
Ensure that the cup holder B is
folded away.
Remove the rubber mat covering
the base of the armrest. This strap does not permit
application of the parking
brake.
To re-engage the electric parking
brake (after rectifying the malfunc-
tion or battery failure), give a long
pull on the control A until the park-
i n g b r a k e w a r n i n g l a m p ( ! ) fl a s h e s
on the instrument panel then give a
second long pull until this warning
l a m p i s o n fi x e d .
The time required for the subse-
quent application may be longer
than during normal operation.
It is essential that the ignition is
not switched on until the parking
b r a k e h a s r e - e n g a g e d ( fl a s h i n g o f
the warning lamp (!) on the instru-
ment panel then the warning lamp
o n fi x e d ) t o a v o i d d a m a g e t o t h e
parking brake.
Take care not to allow moisture or
d u s t i n t h e p r o x i m i t y o f t h e d i a g n o s -
tic socket D which is essential for
the maintenance of your vehicle.
Release the strap from its loca-
tion C .
Pull the strap to release the
b r a k e . A l o u d k n o c k c o n fi r m s t h e
release of the brake.
Take care to put the strap back in
its location C correctly. Otherwise,
it will no longer be possible to ap-
ply the brake. Consult a CITROËN
dealer.
Put the rubber mat back in place
on the base of the armrest.

7 Battery fault - Lighting of the battery warning lamp ma

STOP & START
T h e S t o p & S t a r t s y s t e m p u t s t h e e n -
g i n e t e m p o r a r i l y o n s t a n d b y - S T O P
m o d e - d u r i n g s t o p s i n t h e t r a f fi c
( r e d l i g h t s , t r a f fi c j a m s , o r o t h e r . . . ) .
The engine restarts automatically -
S T A R T m o d e - a s s o o n a s y o u w a n t
to move off. The restart takes place
instantly, quickly and silently.
P e r f e c t f o r u r b a n u s e , t h e S t o p &
S t a r t s y s t e m r e d u c e s f u e l c o n s u m p -
t i o n a n d e x h a u s t e m i s s i o n s a s w e l l
as the noise level when stationary.
Operation
- with the 6-speed electronic
gearbox system, at speeds be-
low 4 mph (6 km/h), press the
brake pedal or put the selector
lever in position N .
Going into engine STOP mode
The "ECO" warning lamp
comes on in the instrument
panel and the engine goes
into standby: I f y o u r v e h i c l e i s fi t t e d
with the system, a time
counter calculates the
sum of the periods in
S T O P m o d e d u r i n g a j o u r n e y . I t r e s t s
itself to zero every time the ignition
is switched on with the key.
For your comfort, during parking
m a o e u v r e s , S T O P m o d e i s n o t a v a i l -
able for a few seconds after coming
out of reverse gear.
S T O P m o d e d o e s n o t a f f e c t t h e f u n c -
t i o n a l i t y o f t h e v e h i c l e , s u c h a s f o r e x -
ample, braking, power steering...
Never refuel with the engine
i n S T O P m o d e ; y o u m u s t
switch off the ignition with the key. Special cases: STOP mode
unavailable
In this case, the "ECO"
w a r n i n g l a m p fl a s h e s f o r a
few seconds then goes off.
This operation is perfectly normal.
S T O P m o d e i s n o t i n v o k e d w h e n :
- the driver's door is open,
- the driver's seat belt is not fas-
tened,
- t h e v e h i c l e h a s n o t e x c e e d e d 6 mph (10 km/h) since the last
engine start using the key,
- the electric parking brake is ap- plied or being applied,
- the engine is needed to maintain a comfortable temperature in the
passenger compartment,
- demisting is active,
- some special conditions (bat- tery charge, engine tempera-
ture, braking assistance, ambient
temperature...) where the engine
is needed to assure control of a
system.
