tional braking, depress the brake pedal
repeatedly rather than continuously.
G
Risk of accident
Never depress the brake pedal continuously
while the vehicle is in motion, e.g. never cause
the brakes to rub by applying constant slight
pedal pressure. This causes the brake system
to overheat, increases the braking distance
and can lead to the brakes failing completely. G
Risk of accident
Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery road surface. This could
cause the drive wheels to lose their grip and
the vehicle could skid.
You can set a variable or permanent limit
speed:
R variable for speed limits, e.g. in built-up
areas
R permanent for long-term speed restric-
tions, e.g. for driving on winter tyres
(Y page 245) G
Risk of accident
Speedtronic is only an aid designed to assist
driving. You are responsible for the vehicle's
speed and for braking in good time.
i The speed indicated in the speedometer
may differ slightly from the limit speed
stored.
Variable Speedtronic With the cruise control lever, you can operate
cruise control or Distronic*/Distronic Plus*
and variable Speedtronic.
The LIM indicator lamp on the cruise control
lever indicates which system you have selec-
ted:
R LIM indicator lamp off:

the speed to any speed above 30 km/h while
the engine is running. :

Risk of accident
If there is a change of drivers, advise the new
driver of the limit speed stored.
Only use Speedtronic when you do not have
to accelerate suddenly to a speed higher than
the stored limit speed allows. You could, oth-
erwise, cause an accident. Driving systems

You can only exceed the limit speed stored if
you deactivate variable Speedtronic:
R using the cruise control lever
R by depressing the accelerator pedal
beyond the pressure point (kickdown)
It is not possible to deactivate variable Speed-
tronic by braking. G
Risk of injury
Variable Speedtronic brakes automatically in
order to avoid exceeding the set speed. As it
does so, the brake pedal is depressed. Do not
place your foot under the brake pedal as it
could become trapped.
Storing the current speed You can use the cruise control lever to limit
the speed to any speed above 30 km/h while
the engine is running.
X Briefly press the cruise control lever
up : or down ?to the pressure point.
The current speed is stored and shown in
the multi-function display.

that speed is and whether it is suitable for the
current driving and traffic situation. Other-
wise, sudden braking could endanger you or
others.

Suspension tuning The Adaptive Damping System (ADS) auto-
matically controls the calibration of the
dampers and springs. The damping is tuned individually to each
wheel and depends on:

your driving style, e.g. sporty
R the road surface condition, e.g. bumps
R your individual selection, i.e. sports or com-
fort
Your selection remains stored even if you

Vehicle level Your vehicle automatically adjusts its ride
height to reduce petrol consumption and
improve driving safety.
Depending on the vehicle height that has
been set, the vehicle automatically adjusts its
height dependent on the current speed. The
vehicle is lowered by up to 10 mm as the
speed increases. As the speed is reduced, the
vehicle is raised up to the set vehicle height. G
Risk of injury
The vehicle is lowered when the engine is
switched off. Therefore, make sure that
nobody is in the vicinity of the wheel housing
or under the vehicle when you switch off the
engine. Otherwise, limbs could become trap-
ped.
! The vehicle is lowered by about 5 mm
when the engine is switched off. When
parking, make sure that you stop your vehi-
cle so that it does not make contact with
the kerb as it is lowered. Otherwise, the
vehicle could be damaged.
Setting the vehicle level manually
Select the "Normal" setting for normal road
surfaces and "Raised" for driving with snow
chains or on particularly poor road surfaces. G
Risk of injury
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
wheel housing or under the vehicle while low-
ering the vehicle when it is stationary. Other-
wise, limbs could become trapped. X

4MATIC ensures that all four wheels are per-
manently driven. Together with ESP ®
, it
improves the traction of your vehicle when- ever a drive wheel spins due to insufficient
grip. G
Risk of accident
4MATIC cannot reduce the risk of an accident
if you drive too fast.
If a drive wheel spins due to insufficient grip:
R only depress the accelerator pedal as far as
necessary when pulling away.
R accelerate less when driving.
R adapt your driving style to suit road and
traffic conditions.
i In wintry driving conditions, the maximum
effect of 4MATIC can only be achieved if
you use winter tyres (M+S tyres), with snow
chains if necessary. PARKTRONIC
G
Risk of accident
PARKTRONIC is only an aid and may not
detect all obstacles. It does not relieve you of
the responsibility of paying attention.

Make sure that no persons or animals are in
the manoeuvring range. Otherwise, they
could be injured.
PARKTRONIC is an electronic parking aid with
ultrasound. It assists you when parking by
displaying the distance between your vehicle
and an obstacle. It also emits a warning tone
when you approach an obstacle.
PARKTRONIC is activated automatically when
you switch on the ignition, release the electric
parking brake or start the engine and shift the
automatic transmission to D,Ror N. Driving systems

Night View Assist*
Night View Assist uses infrared as well as the
normal headlamps to light up the road. A
camera at the top of the windscreen picks up
the infrared light and displays a black and
white image in the multi-function display. The
image shown in the multi-function display
corresponds to a road lit up by main-beam
headlamps. This enables you to see the road's
course and any obstacles in good time. G
Risk of accident
Night View Assist is only an aid designed to
assist driving and does not relieve you of the
responsibility to pay attention. Continue to
look through the windscreen instead of rely-
ing on the Night View Assist display. You are
responsible for safety and must drive in
accordance with traffic conditions. You could
otherwise endanger yourself and others.
The system may be impaired or may not func-
tion if:
R there is poor visibility, e.g. due to snow,
rain, fog or spray.
R the windscreen is dirty, misted up or cov-
ered, for instance by a sticker, in the vicinity
of the camera.
R you drive around a bend or up or down an
incline.
Light from the headlamps of oncoming vehi-
cles does not affect the Night View Assist dis-
play. This is also the case if you cannot switch
on the main-beam headlamps because of
oncoming traffic. G
Risk of accident
Night View Assist does not detect objects in
the immediate vicinity of the vehicle. Look
through the windscreen when manoeuvring.
Make sure that there are no people or animals
in the area in which you are manoeuvring.
i Infrared light cannot be seen by the
human eye and therefore does not dazzle. Night View Assist can always remain on,
even if there is oncoming traffic.
