TOWING TRAILERS
IMPORTANT NOTES
The vehicle must be provided with a type-
approved tow hitch and adequate electri-
cal system to tow caravans or trailers. In-
stallation must be performed by specialised
personnel who will issue the required pa-
pers for travelling on roads.
Install any specific and/or additional rear-
view mirrors as specified by law.
Remember that when towing a trailer,
steep hills are harder to climb, the braking
spaces increase and overtaking takes longer
depending on the overall weight of the trail-
er.
Engage a low gear when driving downhill,
rather than constantly using the brake.
The weight of the trailer on the vehicle tow
hitch will reduce the loading capacity of the
vehicle by the same amount.
Consider the weight of the vehicle at full
load, including accessories and luggage to
make sure you do not exceed the maxi-
mum towable weight (shown on the reg-
istration certificate).Respect the speed limits specific for each
country for vehicles towing trailers. In all
cases, the top speed must not exceed 80
km/h.
The ABS with which the ve-
hicle may be equipped will
not control the braking system of the
trailer. Particular caution is required
on slippery roads.
WARNING
Never modify the braking
system of the vehicle to con-
trol the trailer brake. The trailer brak-
ing system must be fully independent
from the hydraulic system of the ve-
hicle.
WARNING
SNOW TYRES
Use snow tyres type 185/65 R15 only (see
paragraph “Tyres” in section “Technical
specifications”).
The Fiat Dealership will be happy to pro-
vide advice concerning the most suitable
type of tyre for customer’s requirements.
For the type of snow tyre to be used, in-
flation pressures and specifications, follow
the instructions given in paragraph “Tyres”
in section “Technical specifications”.
The winter performance of these tyres is
considerably reduced when the tread thick-
ness is less than 4 mm. Replace them in this
case.
Due to their specific features, the perfor-
mance of snow tyres is much lower than
that of standard tyres in normal conditions
or long motorway stretches. Use them ex-
clusively according to the performance
levels for which they were type-approved.
IMPORTANT When snow tyres are used
with a max speed index below the one
that can be reached by the vehicle (in-
creased by 5%), place a notice in the pas-
senger compartment, plainly in the driver’s
view, which states the max permissible
speed for snow tyres (as per EC Direc-
tive).

WARNING
LIGHTS AND

ABS SYSTEM FAILURE
(amber)
When the ignition key is moved to MAR,
the warning light turns on and should go
off after a few seconds. The warning light
lights up when the system is either not
working or not available. In this case, the
braking system preserves its efficiency un-
altered without, however, offering the ex-
tra operating capacity of the ABS system.
Drive carefully and go to a Fiat Dealership
as soon as possible.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.
EBD SYSTEM
FAILURE
(red) (amber)
Simultaneous turning on of the warning
lights
xwhile >the engine is running
indicates an EBD system failure or non-
availability of the system. Early locking of
the rear wheels may occur in the event of
violent braking causing the vehicle to
swerve. Drive very carefully to a Fiat Deal-
ership to have the system inspected.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed. ENGINE COOLANT
HIGH TEMPERATURE
(red)
When the ignition key is moved
to MAR, the warning light turns on and
should go off after a few seconds.
The warning light turns on when the en-
gine is overheated.
If the warning light comes on, proceed as
follows:
❒during normal travel: stop the ve-
hicle, stop the engine and check that the
water level in the vessel is not under
the MIN reference line. In this case, wait
for a few minutes for the engine to cool
down, then slowly and carefully open
the cap, top-up with coolant and check
that the level is between the MIN and
MAX references on the vessel itself. Al-
so check for leakages. Go to a Fiat
Dealership if the warning should come
on when the engine is started again.❒In demanding vehicle use condi-
tions (e.g. towing trailers uphill or ve-
hicle at full load): slow down and stop
the vehicle if the warning light stays on.
Stop for 2 or 3 minutes with the engine
running and slightly accelerated to
favour better coolant circulation. Then
stop the engine. Check correct liquid
level as described above.
IMPORTANT Under severe use of the ve-
hicle, keep the engine on and slightly ac-
celerated for a few minutes before switch-
ing it off. On certain versions the dedi-
cated message is displayed.
LOW BATTERY
CHARGE (red)
When the ignition key is moved
to MAR, the warning light turns on and
should go out as soon as the engine is
started (with the engine running at idle
speed a brief delay in going out is allowed).
If the warning light stays on glowing steadi-
ly, immediately contact the Fiat Dealer-
ship.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.

BRAKE FLUID
Release cap A-fig. 7. Check that the liq-
uid contained in the tank is at the maxi-
mum level.
Fluid level in the reservoir must not ex-
ceed the MAXmark.
Use the brake fluid shown in the “Fluids
and lubricants” table (see section “Tech-
nical Specifications”). When opening the
cap A, make sure that no dirt gets into the
reservoir. For topping up always use a funnel with
built-in filter (mesh smaller than or equal
to 0.12 mm).
IMPORTANT Brake fluid absorbs mois-
ture. For this reason, if the vehicle is main-
ly used in areas with a high degree of at-
mospheric humidity, the fluid should be
replaced at more frequent intervals than
specified in the “Scheduled servicing plan”.
Do not travel with the wind-
screen washing reservoir
empty: the action of the windscreen
washer is essential for improving vis-
ibility.
WARNING
Some commercial additives
for windscreen washing are
flammable. The engine compartment
contains hot parts which could start
a fire if they come into contact.
WARNINGfig. 7F0T0080m
Prevent brake fluid which is
highly corrosive from coming
into contact with painted
parts. Should that occur, im-
mediately wash with water.

Batteries contain substances
that can be very dangerous
for the environment. It is ad-
visable to have the battery re-
placed by a Fiat Dealership where it
will be disposed of according to the
law.
Whenever an operation on
the battery or near it is re-
quired, always protect your eyes with
special goggles.
WARNING
If the vehicle remains unused
for a long time at very low
temperatures, remove the
battery and take it to a warm
place to avoid freezing.
USEFUL ADVICE
TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR
BATTERY
To avoid draining your battery and make
its life longer, observe the following indi-
cations:
❒when you park the vehicle, ensure the
doors, tailgate and bonnet are closed
properly;
❒switch off all lights inside the vehicle: the
vehicle is however equipped with a sys-
tem which switches all internal lights off
automatically;
❒do not keep accessories (e.g. sound sys-
tem, emergnecy lights, etc.) switched
on for a long time when the engine is
not running;
❒before performing any operation on the
electrical system, disconnect the bat-
tery negative cable;
❒battery terminals shall always be per-
fectly tightened. The battery is also more prone to the risk
of freezing (e.g. already at –10°C). Refer
to the paragraph “Vehicle inactivity” in
“Starting and driving” if the vehicle is left
parked for a long time.
If, after buying the vehicle, you want to in-
stall electric accessories which require
permanent electric supply (alarm, etc.)
contact the Fiat Dealership whose quali-
fied personnel, in addition to suggesting
the most suitable devices, will evaluate the
overall electric absorption, checking
whether the vehicle electric system is ca-
pable of withstanding the load required,
or whether it should be integrated with
a more powerful battery.
Since these devices continue absorbing en-
ergy even when the ignition key is off, they
gradually run down the battery.
