sitions fig. 21:
❒STOP: engine off, key extractable,
steering locked. Some electric devices
(e.g. sound system, central door lock-
ing system, etc.) may work.
❒MAR: driving position. All electrical
devices work regularly.
❒AVV: engine starting (unstable posi-
tion).
The ignition switch is fitted with a safety

started, turns back the ignition key to

STEERING LOCK
Engagement
When the key is in position STOP, re-
move the key and turn the steering wheel
until it is locked.
Switching off
Rock the steering wheel slightly as you
turn the ignition key to MAR.
If the ignition device is tam-
pered with (e.g.: attempted
theft), have it checked over by a Fiat
Dealership as soon as possible.
WARNING
Never extract the key while
the car is moving. The steer-
ing wheel would lock automatically
as soon as the steering wheel is
turned. This also applies to when the
car is towed.
WARNING
Always remove the key when
you leave your car to pre-
vent someone from accidentally op-
erating the controls. Remember to
engage the handbrake. Engage first
gear if the car is parked uphill or re-
verse if the car is parked downhill.
Never leave children unattended in
the car.

The head restraints must be
adjusted so that they sup-
port your head and not your neck.
Only in this way may they perform
their protective action.
WARNING
To optimise head restraint
protective action, adjust the
seat back upright and keep your head
as close as possible to the head re-
straint.
WARNING
To refit the head restraint,
arrange it the right way and
then proceed as for checking that it
is locked.
WARNING
Saddle-shaped rear head re-
straints optimise visibility
and must always be raised it when an
occupant is present.

PRETENSIONERS
To increase the efficiency of the seat belts,
the car is fitted with pretensioners. The-
se devices, in the event of a violent cra-
sh, rewind the seat belts a few centime-
tres. In this way they ensure that the seat
belt adheres perfectly to the wearer befo-
re the restraining action begins.
The seat belt locks to indicate that the de-
vice has intervened; the seat belt cannot
be drawn back up even when guiding it
manually.
IMPORTANT To obtain the highest de-
gree of protection from the action of the
pretensioner device, wear the seat belt
keeping it firmly close to the chest and pel-
vis.
A slight amount of smoke may be detec-
ted during operation of the pretensioners.
This smoke is not harmful and does not
indicate a fire.
The pretensioner does not require any
maintenance or lubrication.
Anything that modifies its original condi-
tions invalidates its efficiency.
If due to unusual natural events (floods,
seas storm, etc.) the device has been af-
fected by water and mud, it must neces-
sarily be replaced.LOAD LIMITERS
To increase passenger’s safety, the front
seat belt reels contain a load limiter whi-
ch allows controlled sag in such a way as
to dose the force acting on the chest and
shoulders during the belt restraining ac-
tion in case of front crash.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
FOR USING THE SEAT BELTS
The driver is responsible for respecting
and ensuring that all the other occupants
of the car also respect the local laws in for-
ce in relation to the use of seat belts.
Always fasten the seat belts before setting
off.
Seat belts must also be used by pregnant
women: risk will be significantly reduced
for both the expectant mother and the
child in the event of an accident. The pretensioner can only
be used once. Go to a Fiat
Dealership to have it replaced after
is has been deployed. The expiration
date of the device is shown on the la-
bel inside the upper oddment com-
partment on passenger side: go to a
Fiat Dealership to have the device re-
placed when the expiration date ap-
proaches.
WARNING
Operations which lead to
knocks, vibrations or localised
heating (over 100°C for a
maximum of 6 hours) in the
area around the pretensioners may
cause damage or trigger them. These
devices are not affected by vibrations
caused by irregularities of the road sur-
face or low obstacles such as kerbs, etc.
Contact a Fiat Dealership for any as-
sistance.

❒Stop the engine and engage the hand-
brake;
❒Engage a gear (on a slope, engage fir-
st gear if the vehicle is faced uphill or
reverse if it is faced downhill) and lea-
ve the wheels steered.
If the car is parked on a steep slope, it is
further advisable to block the wheels with
a wedge or stone. Avoid parking for a long
time with one wheel on the pavement or
steered against the kerb. Do not leave the

vent draining the battery. Always remo-
ve the key when you leave the car.
HANDBRAKE
The handbrake lever is located between
the two front seats.
Pull the lever upwards to operate the
handbrake.
Four or five notches are normally suffi-
cient to lock the car on flat terrain, while
nine or ten may be necessary on a steep
slope with the car loaded.
IMPORTANT If this is not the case, con-
tact Fiat Dealership to have the handbrake
adjusted. When the handbrake lever is pulled up
and the ignition key is at MAR, the in-
strument panel warning light
xwill turn
on.
Proceed as follows to release the hand-
brake:

lease button A-fig. 1;
❒hold the button Apressed and lower
the lever; the warning light
xon the
instrument panel will go out.
Press the brake pedal when carrying out
this operation to prevent the car from
moving accidentally.
IMPORTANT if the handbrake lever tends
to reach end of stroke (groove on the
central tunnel), go to a Fiat dealership to
have the handbrake adjusted correctly.fig. 1F0H0149m
Never leave children unat-
tended in the car. Always re-
move the ignition key when leaving
the car and take it out with you.
