Checking the battery acid level on magic eye
batteries*
The battery acid level in the battery can be checked
through the clear inspection window.

The acid level of a conventional battery can be checked
visually.

- Check the electrolyte level on the front of the battery. The
level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" mark ings.
If the electrolyte level is below the "MIN" level, have an authorized
workshop fill the battery cell with
distilled water .•
Charging of battery
Starting the engine requires a well charged battery.
Always read and heed all WARNINGS below ~ & and
~ & in "Working on the battery" on page 229.
- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers. - Make sure the area is well ventilated when you charge
the battery.
- Connect charger cables.
ALWAYS connect charger cables

- Switch on the charger.
- Make sure the charging rate is not over 6 amps.
- Turn off the charger~&, .
- Disconnect the charger cables.
- Connect both battery cables to the battery if necessary -
first plus, then minus.
It is not ne cessary to remov e th e battery from th e luggage compart
ment, and it is also not necessary to disconnect the cables.
Normally, a battery should be charged at no more than 10 percent
of its ra ted capacity.
For example, a charging current of 4.5 amps would be used on a
battery rated at 45 Ah . Rated capac ity of the battery in your vehicle
is listed on the battery housing.
The ba ttery caps should
not be opened when cha rging a battery.
& WARNING
Charging a battery can be dangerous.
• Never charge a frozen battery. It may explode because of gas
trapped in the ice. Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
• Do not reuse batteries which were frozen. The battery housing
may have cracked and weakened when the battery froze.
• Charge the battery in a well ventilated area. Keep away from
open flame or electrical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas gener-
ated by the battery is explosive. ..,

Never use a fast charger as a boos ter to start the engine . This wil l
seriously damage sensitive electronic components, such as control
units, re lays, radio, etc ., as well as the battery charger .

The vehicle battery must not be charged with a standard small
charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter or out let .•

To prevent lime residue fr om bui lding up on the spray jets, use
dis tilled water when refilling . Always add a g lass cleaner solut ion
(with frost pro tection in the winter).

Groove
means the space between two adjacent tread ribs.
Load rating (code)
means the maximum load that a tire is rated to carry for a given
inflation pressure . You may not find this information on all tires
because it is not required by law.
Maximum load rating
means the load rating for a tire at the maximum permissible infla
tion pressure for that tire.
Maximum loaded vehicle weight
means the sum of:
(a) Curb weight
(b) Accessory weight
(c) Vehicle capacity weight, and
(d) Production options weight
Maximum (permissible) inflation pressure
means the maximum cold inflation pressure to which a tire may be
in flated. Also called "maximum inflation pressure ."
Normal occupant weight
means 150 lbs. (68 kilograms) times the number of occupants
seated in the vehicle up to the total seating capacity of your vehicle.
Occupant distribution
means distribution of occupants in a vehicle .
Outer diameter
means the overall diameter of an inflated new tire.
Overall width
means the linear distance between the exteriors of the sidewalls of
an inflated tire, including elevations due to labeling, decorations, or
protective bands or ribs .
Ply
means a layer of rubber -coated parallel cords.
Production options weight
means the combined weight of those installed regular production
options weighing over 5 lbs. (2.3 kg) in excess of those standard
items which they replace, not previously considered in curb weight
or accessory weight, including heavy duty brakes, ride levelers, roof rack, heavy duty battery, and special trim.
Radial ply tire
means a pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the
beads are laid at substantially 90 degrees to the centerline of the
tread.
Recommended inflation pressure
see =:> page 235, "Cold tire inflation pressure".
Reinforced tire
means a tire designed to operate at higher loads and at higher infla
tion pressures than the corresponding standard tire. Reinforced
tires my be identified as "XL", "xi", "EXTRA LOAD", or "RF" on the
sidewall.
Rim
means a metal support for a tire or a tire and tube assembly upon
which the tire beads are seated .
Rim diameter
means nominal diameter of the bead seat. If you change your wheel
size, you will have to purchase new tires to match the new rim diam
eter.
Rim size designation
means rim diameter and width.
Rim width
means nominal distance between rim flanges .

ture. For example, the numbers 2209 mean that the tire was
produced in the 22th week of 2009. The other numbers are
marketing codes that may or may not be used by the tire manufac
turer. This information is used to contact consumers if a tire defect
requires a recall.
Tire ply composition and materials used
The number of plies indicates the number of layers of rubber-coated
fabric in the tire. In general, the greater the number of plies, the
more weight a tire can support. Tire manufacturers also must indi
cate the materials in the tire, which include steel, nylon, polyester,
and others .
Maximum Load Rating
This number indicates the maximum load in kilograms and pounds
that can be carried by the tire.
Tire quality grading for treadwear, traction, and
temperature resistance
Tread wear, traction and temperature grades => page 249.
Maximum Permissible Inflation Pressure
This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should ever
be put in the tire under normal driving conditions.
Replacing tires or rims on vehicles equipped with tire
pressure monitoring system*
The wheels on your vehicle are equipped with a sensor which
constantly monitors the air pressure inside the tire, and then trans
mits this information to the tire pressure monitoring system *. If you
are going to replace the wheel rims on your vehicle, make sure the
new rims also have these sensors . The sensors must be compatible
with the tire pressure monitoring system * on your vehicle.
If the sensors are to be installed on different rims , the seal, washer ,
and valve cap for each sensor must be replaced.
If you install rims, which do not have the sensors, or have sensors
which are not compatible, then the tire pressure monitoring system* will not work properly.
In this case, the tire pressure moni
toring system * would not be able to monitor the tire pressure or
warn you if it is necessary .
• The battery inside of the tire pressure sensor has a limited
service life.
• Always drive with the valve stem caps securely mounted. We
recommend using factory installed valve stem caps. Ask your autho
rized Audi dealer to replace lost valve stem caps.
The installation of replacement tires with steel cord body plies in
the tire sidewall may cause malfunction of the tire pressure moni
toring system*, and is not recommended (cord material information
in molded on the tire sidewall) .
Always check your tire pressure monitoring system* indicator after
replacing one or more tires on your vehicle. If the tire pressure
monitoring system* indicator flashes, or is on, your system is not
working properly. Your replacement tire might be incompatible with
your tire pressure monitoring sys tem* , or some component o f the
tire pressure monitoring system* may be damaged.
& WARNING
• Using incorrect or unmatched tires and/ or wheels or improper
tire and wheel combinations can lead to loss of control, collision
and serious personal injury.
• Always use tires, rims and wheel bolts that meet the specifica
tions of original factory-installed tires or other combinations that
have been specifically approved by the vehicle manufacturer .
• Tires age even if they are not being used and can fail suddenly,
especially at high speeds. Tires that are more than 6 years old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at
lower speeds.
• Never mount used tires on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history." Old used tires may have been damaged
even though the damage cannot be seen that can lead to sudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control. .,_

Emergency situations
General
This chapter is intended for trained emergency crews and working
pe rsonnel who have the necessary tools and equ ipment to perform
these operations. •
Starting by pushing or towing
(D Note
Vehicles with an automatic transmis sion cannot be started by
push ing or towing . •
Starting with jumper cables
If necess ary, the en gine can b e sta rted by co nnectin g it to
the battery of anothe r vehicle.
If th e engine should fail to start because of a discharged or weak
b at te ry, the batt ery ca n be co nnected t o the ba ttery of
another
vehicle, using a pair of jumper cables to start the engine .
Jumper cables
Use
only jumper cables of sufficiently large cross section to safe ly
c arry the s ta rt er cu rrent . Refer to the m anufac tu re r's sp ecifi cati ons.

& WARNING
Batteries contain electricity, acid , and gas. Any of the se can cause
very ser ious or fatal injury . Follow the instructions below for safe
handling of your vehicle 's battery .
• Always shield your eyes and avoid leaning over the battery
whenever possible .
• A discharged battery can already freeze at temperatures just
below 32 °F (0 °C l. Before connecting a jumper cable , the frozen
battery must be thawed completely , otherwise it could explode .
• Do not allow battery acid to conta ct eyes or skin. Flush any
contacted area with water immediately.
• Improper use of a booster battery to start a vehicle may cause
an explosion.
• Vehicle batteries generate e xplosive gases . Keep sparks , flame
and lighted c igarettes away from batteries.
• Do not try to jump st art any vehicle with a low acid level in the
battery.
• The voltage of the booster battery must also have a 12-Volt
rating. The capacity (Ah l of the booster battery should not be
lower than that of the discharged battery . Use of batteries of
different voltage or substantially different "Ah" rating may cause
an explosion and personal injury .
• Never charge a frozen battery. Gas trapped in the ice may cause
an explosion.
• Never charge or use a battery that has been frozen . The battery
c ase may have be weakened .
• Use of batter ies of different voltage or substantially different
c apacity (Ah l rating may cause an explosion and injury . The
capacity (Ahl of the booster batte ry should not be lower than that
of the discharged battery . _..

otherwise current could already start to flow as soon as the positive
( + ) terminals are connected .

Use of jumper cables
Make sure to connect the jumper cable clamps in exactly
the order described below!

The procedure described below for connecting jumper
cables is intended to provide a jump start for your vehicle.
Preparatory measures
1. Do not jump start a frozen battery! Replace such a
battery!
2. Otherwise apply the hand brake and sh ift into idle gear if
your vehicle has manual transmission, and put the selector lever into P posit ion if your vehicle has auto
matic transmission.
3. For both vehicles switch off all consumers and the igni
tion.
Connecting/disconnecting the jumper cable.
4. Connect one end of the red jumper cable on the jump
start bolt G) => fig. 173 (Bolts under red cover= "posi
tive") of the vehicle to be started
@.
5. Connect the other end of the red jumper cable to the
positive terminal @ of the booster battery @.
6. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the nega -
tive terminal @ of the booster battery @. _,,,

7. Connect the other end of the black jumper cable to the
negative terminal (bolt head)
G) in the external starting
point @of your vehicle.
8. Route the jumper cables so that they cannot catch in any
rotating parts in the engine compartment.
Starting the engine
9. Start the engine of the vehicle providing assistance and
allow it to run at idle.
10. Now start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged
battery , wait for two to three minutes until the engine
"runs" smoothly.
11. If the engine does not start: Stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try again after about 30 seconds.
12. In the vehicle that has received start assistance, turn on
the heater blower and the rear window heating to elimi
nate any voltage peaks when disconnecting. Driving
lights must be switched off!
13. Disconnect the cable while the engine is running exactly
in
reverse order to that described in=> page 280,
"Connecting/disconnecting the jumper cable.". When
doing so, make sure that the cable cannot contact
rotating engine parts.
14. Close the cover on the posit ive terminal.
The battery is vented to the outside to prevent gases from entering
the vehicle interior. Make sure that the jumper clamps are well
connected with their
metal parts in full contact with the battery
terminals.
& WARNING
To avoid serious personal injury and damage to the vehicle, heed
all warnings and instructions of the jumper cable manufacturer.
If
in doubt, call for road service .
• Jumper cables must be long enough so that the vehicles do not
touch.
• When connecting jumper cables, make sure that they cannot
get caught in any moving parts in the engine compartment.
• Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always
read and heed all WARNINGS=>
page 209, "Engine compartment" .

Improper hook-up of jumper cables can ruin the generator.
• Always connect POSITIVE(+) to POSITIVE (+l, and NEGATIVE(-) to
NEGATIVE( -) ground post of the battery manager control unit.
• Check that all screw plugs on the battery cells are screwed in
firmly. If not, tighten plugs prior to connecting clamp on negative
battery terminal.
• Please note that the procedure for connecting a jumper cable as
described above applies specifically to the case of your vehicle
being jump started. When you are giving a jump start to another
vehicle , do
not connect the negative(-) cable to the negative 1-1
terminal on the discharged battery ©-Instead, securely connect
the negative (-1 cable to either a solid metal component that is
firmly bolted to the engine block or to the engine block itself . If the
battery that is being charged does not vent to the outside, escaping
battery gas could ignite and explode! •
