• Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only when they are in
good condition are they able to clear the windows properly to
provide uncompromising visibility. Worn or damaged wiper blades
are a safety hazard~

• The light/rain sensor* is only designed to assist and support
the driver. It remains entirely the driver's responsibility to monitor outside weather conditions and to manually activate the wipers as
soon as rain or drizzle reduces visibility through the windshield.
• The windshield must not be treated with water-repellent mate
rials. They can increase glare under poor visibility conditions such
as wetness, darkness, or when the sun is low on the horizon. In
addition, they can cause the windshield wipers to chatter.

In freezing or near freezing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass
before you turn the wipers on. Loosen a wiper blade which is frozen
in place before operating the wipers to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted window . Using the
wipers as a convenient ice scraper will destroy the wiper blades.
• Before you take your vehicle to an automatic car wash, make sure
you have the windshield wiper system switched off (lever in position
0), otherwise the windshield wiper system could get damaged in the
car wash if it should suddenly come on.
[ i] Tips
• The rain sensor is part of the interval wiping system. Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor . To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
Controls and equip
ment
Clear vision
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades cause smearing, which
can affect the operation of the light/rain sensor*. Check the condi
tion of your windshield wiper blades regularly.
• Applies to vehicles with light/rain sensor: When the wipers are
switched on manually and in rain conditions, the automatic head
lights* turn on~

control" or off during the day when the wipers are no longer oper
ating. The automatic headlights * function is available in this case

• Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights.
Operate the windshield wiper/washer system=> page 60,
fig. 50 ® with the headlights turned on by holding the
lever for longer than one second.
The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front headlights with water .
You should inspect the headlights regularly (for example when refu
eling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses.
To ensure the system works properly in winter, keep the washer jets
free of snow and remove any ice using a de -icing spray. •

Aut om ati c dimmin g fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
Sensors for automati c headligh ts *
With the help of the sensors in the mirror, when the light switch is
in the
AUTO posi tion, the low beams are switched on and off auto
matically depending on the ambient light conditions=>
page 52.

The glass of the inside rearview mirror is l ayered and contain s an
e lectrolyt e to a chieve its pr opert ie s . Be aware of liquid electr olyte
le aki ng fr om a broken mirror glass . This l iquid can cause irritation
to skin , eyes , and r espiratory sy stem .

Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror glass wi ll damage any
p lastic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled electrolyte
immediately wi th clear wa ter and a sponge .

• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from

light sensors, as this would interfere with both the automatic oper
ation of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside

In position => fig . 79 G) both the ignition and engine are off , and the
steering is locked.
To
lo ck the steering after you have removed the ignition key, turn
the steering whee l in either direction until you hear it lock into
place . You should always lock the steering whenever you leave your
vehic le. This makes a vehicle theft even more difficult=>& .
Ignition on 0
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the igni
tion lock, turn the steering wheel back and forth. This will take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wil l be able to turn the
key freely and start the engine.
Starting the engine ®
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and other electrical consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it will return to position
G) .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to posi tion
G) . The non -repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the starter when the engine is running.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lo ck while the veh icle is
moving. The steering wheel will lo ck causing lo ss of control .
• If you have to leave your vehicle -even for just a minute -always
remove the ign ition key and take it with you . This i s especially
i mportant if you are going to l eave children behind in the vehi cle .
The children could start the eng ine or u se other vehi cle control s.
Unsupe rv ised use of vehicle controls (for e xample , power
window s) can cau se serious per sonal injurie s.

If the veh icle ba ttery has been disconnected a nd then reconnected,
then you must leave the key in position

Ignition key safety lock
The ig nition ke y can only be rem oved when the selec tor
le ver i s in the "P" (Par k) p osition.
After switching off the ignition, the ignition key can only be
r emoved from the igni tio n lock w hen the se lector leve r is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the key, the selector lever is
l ocked and cannot be moved. •

• Never try to remove d irt, mud or dust if the surface of the vehicle
is dry . Never use a dry cloth or sponge, since this cou ld scratch your
vehic le's paint or w indows.
• Never wash your car in bright sunlight. Drops of water act as
magnify ing lenses and may damage your paint.
• When you wash your car in the winter : if you rinse your vehicle
with a hose, be careful not to aim the stream of water directly at
locks, or at door or hatch openings -they can freeze shut.
• Never use sponges designed to remove insects, or any kitchen
scouring sponges or similar products. They can damage your paint
finish .
• Never use a dry cloth or sponge to c lean the head ligh ts. Only use
wet cloths or sponges to prevent scratches . It is best to use soapy
water.
For the sake of the environment
In the interest of the environment, the vehicle should on ly be
washed in specia l wash bays. •
Washing your vehicle with a power washer
Cleaning the exterior of your car with a high -p ressure
power washer is safe as l ong as y ou observe a few simple
rules .

not hold the spray nozzle too close to soft materials.
When cleaning the vehicle with a power washer always follow the
operating instructions. This applies particula rly to the
operating
pre ssure
and the spraying di stance . Maintain a sufficient distance
to soft materia ls such as rubber hoses and sound/vibration dead
ening materia ls (part icularly on the underside of the engine hood).
Do not use a jet which sprays water in a
direct stream or one that
has a
rotating jet.
Water temperature should not exceed 140 °F (60 °Cl.
& WARNING
Never wash tire s with a jet that sp ra ys water in a dir e ct stream .
Thi s could cau se invisible damage to the tire s and we ake n them ,
eve n if th e spra y is from a re lativel y lo ng dis tanc e an d f or a sh o rt
time . Damaged and weakened tire s can f ail and cau se ac cident s
a nd per sona l injur y.

To avoid damaging your vehicle, always make sure that there is
suffic ient distance between the spray head and soft materia ls like
rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound -deadening materials . Never
aim the spray head at the same p oint for a long time . This also
applies to cleaning headlights and painted bumpers . Remember :
the c loser the nozzle is to the surface of the material, the greater the
stress on the mater ial. •

ca use a vapor lock if th e bra ke fluid is left in the system too
long. Thi s can seriou sly affect the effic iency of the brake s as
w ell as y our safet y. T his c ould re s u lt in an a ccident .

Because of the problem of proper disposal of brake fluid as well as
the special tools required and the necessary expertise, we recom
mend that you have the brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi
dea ler. •
Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l battery, an AGM battery. This
ba ttery is loca ted in the luggage compar tment and must be
replaced with an original equipment battery. Under normal oper
ating conditions, the battery is
ma inten anc e-free .
Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service .
You a re well advised to replace a battery that is o lder than 5 years .
Disconn ecting th e batt ery te rmin als
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again. To prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electrical sys tem when abso lutely necessary for repairs .
Vehi cles not dri ven for lo ng p eriods
If you are going to let your vehic le stand for a long time and n ot
drive it, you should remember there are e lectrica l components
whic h are still functioning and they will draw energy from the
battery and drain it, for example, the engine immobilizer. To prevent
t his, you can eithe r charge the batte ry occasionally to keep it in
good working condition or you can disconnect the negative cable
on the battery.
W int er op erati on
During the winter months, batte ry capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
whi le starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc ., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling o nly short distances . Let your authorized Audi dealer
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
~ page 232. A we ll charged battery will not only preven t starting
problems when the weather is cold, but will also last longer.
Repla cing batter y
The new battery must hav e the same capacity, voltage ( 12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery .

Bulbs
Replacing light bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have your autho
rized Audi dealer replace burned out bulbs for you.
It is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to replace
vehicle light bulbs since in many cases , other parts of the car must
first be removed before you are able to get to the bulb. This applies
especially to the light bulbs in the front of your car which you can
only reach through the engine compartment.
Sheet metal and bulb holders can have sharp edges that can cause
serious cuts, and parts must be correctly taken apart and then prop
erly put back together to help prevent breakage of parts and long
term damage from water that can enter housings that have not been properly resealed.
For your safety , we recommend that you have your authorized Audi
dealer replace any bulbs for you, since your dealer has the proper
tools, the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (Xenon lights)*:
•
Due to the high electrical voltage, have the bulbs replaced by a qual
ified technician. Headlights with Xenon light can be identified by the
high voltage sticker .
& WARNING
Contact with high-voltage components of the electrical system
and improper replacement of gas discharge (Xenon) headlight
bulbs can cause serious personal injury and death .
• Xenon bulbs are pressurized and can explode when being
changed.
• Changing Xenon lamps requires the special training, instruc
tions and equipment .
• Only an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified workshop
should change the bulbs in gas discharge lamps.
& WARNING
There are parts with sharp edges on the openings and on the bulb holders that can cause serious cuts .
• If you are uncertain about what to do, have the work performed
by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified workshop. Serious
personal injury may result from improperly performed work.

• If you must replace the light bulbs yourself, always remember
that the engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazardous area to
work in. Always read and heed all WARNINGS=>
page 209, "Engine
