Using the right fuel helps keep the environment clean and
prevents engine damage.
Fuel r ecomm end ati on
The fuel recommended for your vehic le is unl eade d prem ium grade
gaso line . See also ~
page 291, "Data". Audi recommends using TOP
T IER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95
RON). For more information on TOP TIER Detergent Gaso line, please
go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com).
The recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine can also be found on a label located on the inside of the fuel fille r flap. This
rating may be specified as AK I or RON .
Your vehic le may also be operated us ing unleaded regular gasoline
with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKl/91 RON . However, using 87
AKl/9 1 RON octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance.
Use unle ad ed ga so line only . Unleaded gaso line is avai lable
throughout the USA, Canada, and in most European countries. We
recommend that you do not take your vehicle to areas or countr ies
where un leaded gasoline may not be available .

Octane ra tin g
Octane rating indicates a gaso line's ability to resist engine
damaging "knock" caused by premature ignition and detonation.
Therefore, buying the correct grade of gaso line is very important to
help prevent possible engine damage and a loss of engine perfor
mance. Gasoline most common
ly used in the United States and Canada has
the following octane ratings that can usua lly be found on the filler
pump:
• Premium Grade : 91 -96 AKI
• Regular Grade: 87 -90 AKI
Explanation of the abbreviations:
AKI = Anti Knock Index= (R +M)/2 = (RON +MON)/2
RON = Research Octane Number
MON
= M otor Octane Number .

• Do not use any fue l with octane ratings lower than 87 AKI or 91
RON otherwise expensive engine damage will occur .
• Do
not use leaded gasoline! The use of leaded gasoline will
severe ly damage your vehicle's catalytic converter and its abi lity to
control exhaust emissions. •
Blended gasoline
Use of g aso line containing alco hol or M TB E ( meth yl
t er tiary butyl e ther )
You may use unleaded gasoline blended with alcohol or MTBE
(commonly referred to as oxygenates) if the blended mixture meets
the follow ing criteria:
Bl end of g asoline m eth anol (wood al coho l or methyl alc oh ol)
• Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher .
• Blend must contain no more than 3% methanol.
• Blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents.

will be filled -causing the fuel to overflow when it becomes warm
and pollute the environment.

• Running your engine while refuelling may cause vapors to
escape or even fuel to spill out of the tank. This would then shut off
the fuel nozzle before the tank is full.
• Do not refuel your vehicle with the ignition switched on . The fuel
gauge may otherwise not indicate the correct fuel level after
refuelling. •
Unlocking the fuel filler flap by hand
You can open the fuel filler flap by hand if the power
locking system should fail.

If the power locking system should fail, you can still open
the flap manually:
- Open the rear lid.
- Open the round cover in the right-side interior trim.
- Remove the red plastic knob from its retainer. -
Pull the plastic cord in the direction of the arrow to
unlock the fuel filler flap=> fig. 134. •

Closing the engine hood
- Pull the hood down until the pressure from the struts is
reduced .
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage => &.
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment!
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling the different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area!

To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood :
• Switch off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Apply the parking brake .

• Move selector lever of automatic transmission to "P" (Park);
put manual transmission in Neutral .
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood .
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components . They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out.
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire .
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine
is running or being started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.
• If you must perform a check or repair with the engine running: ..,

reduce corrosion protection. The resu lting corrosion can cause a
loss of coolant and serious engine damage.
• Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant to your vehicle's
engine coolant. Adding radiator repair fluid may adverse ly affect the
function and performance of your cooling system and cou ld result
in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty. •
Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with a quick
gla nce .

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,

- Switch the ignition of f.
- Read the coo lant l eve l at the coo lant exp ansio n tank
==> fig. 142. With a col d e ngine, it must b e above the
"min" mar k. Wit h a hot engine, it can be a little above t he
indicated range.
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be seen in the
engine compartment i llustration. To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off.

coolant level sensor.
When the coolant leve l is too low, the warning light in the Auto
Check System =>
page 34 will blink un til you add coolant and the
level has been restored to normal. Even though there is an e lectric
coo la n t level sensor, we still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling system . In the event
of coo lant loss, the co oling sys tem shou ld be i nspected immedi
ate ly by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not enough merely to add
coo lant .
In a
sealed system , losses can occur only if the boiling point of the
coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating .

Do not add any type of radiator leak sea lant to your vehicle's engine
coolant. Adding rad iator repair fluid may adversely affect the func
tion and performance of your coo ling system and could resu lt in
damage not covered by your New Vehic le Limited Warra nty. •
Adding coo lant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS==> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 217 .
-Turn off the engin e.
- Let the engine cool down.

Replacement engine coolant must conform to exact specifications
=>
page 224, "C oolant" . Even in an emerge ncy, if coo lant add it ive
G 12+ +, G 12+ or G12 is not availab le, do
not use a different additive.
Use p lain water instead until you ca n get the c orrec t addit ive and
can restore the correct ratio. This should be done as soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount o f coo lant, then you should
add co ld antifreeze and cold water only when the engine is cold.
A lways use
new e ngine c oolan t when refil ling .
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. Excess coolant will be
forced ou t through the pressure relief va lve in the cap when the
engine becomes hot.
& WARNING
• The cooling sy stem is under pre ssure and can get very hot .
Reduce the risk of scalding from hot coolant by following these
s teps.
- Turn off the engine and allo w it to cool down .
- Protect your face, hands and arms from esc aping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large , thick rag .
- Turn the cap slo wly and very carefully in a counter -clockwise
dire ction while applying light , downward pressure on the top
of the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the e xhaust system or hot engine parts . Under certain condi
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire .

• Antifreeze is poi sonous. Always store antifreeze in its original
container and well out of the re ach of children .
• If you drain the coolant , it must be caught and safely stored in
a proper container clearly marked "poison ".

• Coo lant po llutes the environment and could cause an engine
fire. Excess coolant will be forced out through the pressure re lief
va lve in the cap when the engine becomes hot.

Drained coolant should not be reused. Always dispose of used

Radiator fan
The radi ator f an s witches on au tomati cally by itself.
T he e lectric radiator fan is control led bythe rmoswitches that switch
on and off depending on coolant and engine compartment temper
atures.
An auxiliary electric radiator fan* switches on and off depending on
coo la nt tempe rature a nd other veh ic le operati on cond itio ns.
After you switch the engine off, the aux iliary fan can continue
running for up to 10 m inutes -even with the ignition off. It can even
sw itch o n again later by itself=> & , if
• the temperature of the engine coo lant rises due to the heat
b ui ld-up fro m the eng ine in the eng ine co m partment, or

When instal ling the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrica l
consumers are switched off~

We recommend that you use maintenance -free or c yc le-re sis
tant/leak -proof
batteries according to the standards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001 ) .
Rep lacing the battery should be carried by a qualified workshop .
Please follow the instruct ions on the battery cover.

• All work on the battery requ ires technical knowledge . Please
contact an Audi dealership or another authorized facility for ques
t ions about the battery -dange r of acid burns and explosion hazard!
• T he battery must not be opened! Do not try to change the
battery 's liquid level, otherwise detona ting gas will escape from the
battery -explosion hazard I
• The AGM battery in the luggage compartmen t cannot lea k,
because the electrolyte for this battery is absorbed into a special
glass mat. Th is leak -proof battery must not be replace with a
conventional battery .
• Make sure the ventilation hose on the side of the battery is
connected, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak out.
• Battery holder and term inals a lways have to be secured correctly.

Because of the proble m of proper d isposal of a battery, we recom
mend your authorized Audi dealer change the battery for you.
Batteries contain sul furic acid and lead and m ust always be
disposed of properly in compliance with all environmenta l regula
t ions. Disposing of vehic le batteries improperly is ve ry dangerous to
the environment . Make sure that the removed battery cannot over
balance, otherwise su lfur ic ac id might escape!
[ i ] Tip s
If your vehic le is left standing for severa l weeks at extreme ly low
temperatures, the vehicle battery should be removed and stored
where it will not freeze. Th is will prevent it from being damaged and
having to be replaced .•

Checking the battery acid level on magic eye

The battery acid level in the battery can be checked
through the clear inspection window.

The acid level of a conventional battery can be checked
visually.

- Check the electrolyte level on the front of the battery. The
level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" mark ings.
If the electrolyte level is below the "MIN" level, have an authorized
workshop fill the battery cell with
distilled water .•
Charging of battery
Starting the engine requires a well charged battery.
Always read and heed all WARNINGS below ~ & and
~ & in "Working on the battery" on page 229.
- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers. - Make sure the area is well ventilated when you charge
the battery.
- Connect charger cables.
ALWAYS connect charger cables
POSITIVE

- Switch on the charger.
- Make sure the charging rate is not over 6 amps.
- Turn off the charger~&, .
- Disconnect the charger cables.
- Connect both battery cables to the battery if necessary -
first plus, then minus.
It is not ne cessary to remov e th e battery from th e luggage compart
ment, and it is also not necessary to disconnect the cables.
Normally, a battery should be charged at no more than 10 percent
of its ra ted capacity.
For example, a charging current of 4.5 amps would be used on a
battery rated at 45 Ah . Rated capac ity of the battery in your vehicle
is listed on the battery housing.
The ba ttery caps should
not be opened when cha rging a battery.
& WARNING
Charging a battery can be dangerous.
• Never charge a frozen battery. It may explode because of gas
trapped in the ice. Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
• Do not reuse batteries which were frozen. The battery housing
may have cracked and weakened when the battery froze.
• Charge the battery in a well ventilated area. Keep away from
open flame or electrical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas gener-
ated by the battery is explosive. ..,
