Aside from their norma l safety function, safety be lts work to help
keep the driver or front passenger in position in the event of a col li­
sion so tha t the side curtain airbags can provide protection .
The airbag system is not a substitute for your safety belt. Rather, it
is part of the overa ll occupant restraint system in your vehicle .
Always remembe r that the airbag sy stem can only help to protect
you if you are wea ring your safety belt and wearing it proper ly. This
is another reason why you should a lways wear your safety belts, not
just because the law requires you to do so~

I t is important to remember tha t while the side curtain airbag
system is designed to help reduce the likelihood of serious injuries,
other in jur ies, for examp le, swelling, bruising, and minor abrasions
can a lso be associated with these airbags upon dep loyment.
Remember too, these airbags will dep loy only once and only in
certa in kinds o f accidents -your safety belts are always there to
offer protection.
T he side curtain airbag s ystem basi cally consists of :
• T he electronic control module and external side impac t sensors
• T he side curtain airbags above the front and rear side windows
• The airbag indicator light in the instrument panel
T he airbag system is monitored electronically to make certain i t is
functioning prope rly at a ll times. Each time you turn on the ignition,
the airbag system indicator light will come on for a few seconds
(self diagnos tics).
The side curtain airbag is not a cti vated :
• if the ignition is tur ned off,

The side curtain airbags inflate between the occupant and the
windows on the side of the vehic le that is struck in a side co llis ion
=> fig. 2 17.
When the system is triggered, the side curtain airbag is filled with propellant gas and brea ks through a seam above the fron t and rear
side windows identified by the A IRBAG label. In order to help
provide th is additiona l protection, the side curtain a irbag must
inflate within the b link of an eye at very high speed and with great
f orce . The side curtai n airbag could i njure you i f your seating pos i­
tion is not proper or upright or if items are located in the area where
t he supplementa l side cu rtai n airbag inflates . This applies espe ­
cia lly to children=>
page 238.
Although they a re not a soft pi llow, side curta in airbags can
"cus hion" the impact and in this way they can help to reduce the risk
of injury to the head and the upper part of the body .
A fine dust may develop wh en the airbag depl oys. Thi s is qu ite
normal and does not mean there is a fire in the veh ic le. •
Important safety instructions on the side

Improperly wearing safety belts and improper seating positions
increase the risk of serious personal injury and death whenever a
vehicle is being used.

• Never let occupants pla ce any parts of their bodies in the area
from wh ich the side curtain airbags inflate .
• Always make sure that the side curtain airbags can inflate
without interference . Unsuitable accessories fitted inside the
expansion range of a side curtain airbag can dangerously interfere
with it s function. A deploying head airbag develops enough for ce
to catapult any p ie ce of add-on component out of its path of infla­
tion and into the pas senger compartment. An occupant hit by
such a projectile can suffer serious injury or death =>

• Do not swivel the sun visors to the side if you have any objects
clipped onto them (for example pens) . If the airbag should deploy ,
you could be in jured by these objects .
• Use the built -in coat hooks only for lightweight clothing . Never
leave any heavy or sharp-edged ob je cts in the pocket s that may
interfere with airbag deployment and can cause personal injury in
an accident .
• Never use hanger s to hang c lothing from the hook s.
• Only use fa ctory -installed sun shades or , in the case of shades
installed after the vehicle leaves the factory , only Audi roll-up
s unscreens may be used =>

• Always sit in proper seating position and wear safety belts
while traveling so that the side cu rtain airbags can help provide
protection .
• The ai rbag system can only be triggered on ce . If the airbag has
been triggered, the system must be replaced by an authori zed
Audi de aler or qualified workshop.
• Always have work involving the side curtain airbag system ,
removal and installation of the airbag components , or other
repairs performed by a qualified dealership. Otherwise the airbag
system may not work correctly.

Mounting and releasing the anchorage hook
If you use a child restraint system with hooks or other
latches attached to adjustable straps.
Mounting
- Press the anchorage hook wit h the spring catch re lease
onto the lower anchorage so that the anchorage hook locks into place .
- Pull on the anchorage hook to make sure that it has
securely engaged the lower anchorage.
- Tighten the strap following the child restraint manufac­
turer 's instructions.
Releasing
- Loosen the tens ion on the strap following the child
restraint manufacturer's instructions .
- Depress the spring catch on the hook. - Hold the spring catch in depressed posit ion .
- Move the hook in the direction of the vehicle floor so that
there is enough space to release the anchorage hook
from the lower anchorage.
& WARNING
• Improper installation of child restraints will increase the risk of
injuries in a crash.
• Always refer to the child restraints manufacturer's instructions
for proper instaHation of the child restraint and proper use of the
lower anchorages or safety belts in your vehicle. •

Improper installation of child restraints will increase the risk of
injury and death in a crash.
• Improper use of child restraint anchors (tether anchors) could
lead to injury in a collision. The anchors are designed to withstand
only those loads imposed by correctly fitted child restraints.
• Never mount two child restraint systems on one LATCH lower
anchor point.
• Never attach two child restraint systems to one tether strap or
tether anchorage.
• Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of
the child restraint you intend to install in your Audi.
• Never use child restraint tether anchorages to secure safety
belts or other kinds of occupant restraints.
• Never attach a tether strap to a tie-down hook in the luggage
compartment.

With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the engine turned off or
use other MMI functions, the battery is being discharged.
If starting capability is jeopardized due to energy consumption , the
following warning appears in the MMI display:
Please start engine, otherwise system will switch off in
3 minutes.
The warning indicates that the system will be turned off automati­
cally after 3 minutes. If you wish to continue using the functions,
you have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the vehicle is being
driven, the battery can become discharged. This happens mostly
when little energy is being generated and a great deal consumed
and the battery's state of charge is not optimal.
To bring the energy balance back into equilibrium , consumers
which require especially large amounts of energy are temporarily cut back or switched off. Heating systems in particular require a
great deal of energy. If you notice, for example, that the heated
seats* or the heated rear window are not heating, they have been
temporarily cut back or switched off. These systems will be available
again as soon as the energy balance has been restored.
You will also notice that engine idle speed has been increased
slightly . This is normal and not a cause for concern. By increasing
engine idle speed the additional energy required is generated and
the battery is charged. •
Driver notification in the instrument cluster
d isplay
If battery power drops into the range where it can limit the ability of
the engine to start, this is shown in the instrument cluster display
with the following driver message:
'-' Low battery charge: battery will be charged while driving
This notification reminds you that the starting capability of the
engine may be limited. As soon as you start driving again, the
battery will be recharged and the notification will go out.
Driver notification appears and goes out again
If this driver notification appears after the ignition is turned on or
while driving and it goes out again after a while, the battery has
been adequately recharged.
Driver notification appears and does not go out again
If this driver notification appears after the ignition is turned on or
while driving and does not go out again, the battery's state of
charge is not in the optimal range. Starting ability is restricted . Have
the battery checked as soon as possible at a dealership. •

Under certain circumstances, weekly washing may be necessary.
Under other conditions , a monthly washing and waxing may be
adequate .
After the winter, the
underside of the vehicle should be thoroughly
washed, preferably in a professional car wash.

Automatic car wash
The vehicle can be washed in almost any modern auto­
matic car wash.
The vehicle paint is so durable that the vehicle can normally be
washed without problems in an automatic car wash . However, the
effect on the paint depends to a large extent on the design of the
facility, the filtering of the wash water , the type of wash and care
material, etc. If the paint has a dull appearance after going through
the car wash or is scratched , bring this to the attention of the oper­
ator immediately . If necessary, use a different car wash .
Before going through a car wash, be sure to take the usual precau­
tions such as closing the windows and power roof . Factory installed
antennas must not be removed.
If you have installed additional accessories on the vehicle - such as
spoilers, roof rack, etc. -it is best to ask the car wash operator if
these should be removed.

Washing the vehicle by hand
A lot of water is needed when washing a vehicle by hand.
-Before you start washing, make sure you have read and
understood the WARNINGS =:>

-First soak all dried dirt until it is soft, then rinse it off.
- As you clean your vehicle, start with the roof and work
your way down to the bottom, using a sponge, a sponge glove or a clean brush.
- Rinse the sponge or the sponge glove often, flushing it
clean each time.
- Use special car shampoo only for very persistent dirt.
- Rinse the car thoroughly with water.
- Use a chamois leather to gently w ipe the exterior dry.
Use a separate sponge for cleaning the wheels , door sills and other
regions exposed to road dirt. In this way, you will not scratch the
paint with coarse particles imbedded in the sponge the next time
you wash the car.

• Do not clean the underside of the chassis, fenders, wheel
covers, or other hard to reach parts without protecting your hands
and arms. You may cut yourself on sharp-edged metal parts.

Plastic and vinyl
Plastic needs special care.
Use a clean, damp cloth or sponge to remove dust and light surface
dirt. For other soil, use a lukewarm all -purpose cleaning solution or
a mild saddle soap for vinyl trim. Remove water spots and traces of
soap with a clean, damp cloth or sponge . Use a clean, soft cloth to
rub dry .
Grease, tar or oil stains can be removed with a clean cloth or sponge
soaked with all-purpose cleaner or with a solvent designed espe­
cially to clean vinyl.
Occasionally apply a colorless vinyl or leather preservative to retain
the material's luster and pliability.

Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots and deposits from
aluminum surfaces. Chrome care products and alkaline cleaners
will attack aluminum surfaces and can damage them over time.

Touch-up paint
Minor paint damages should be touched up immediately.
-Use either a touch -up paint stick or spray paint to cover
minor scratches and nicks.
Your Audi dealer has touch-up paint for minor scratches and stone
chips . Scratches should be touched up soon after they occur to
prevent corrosion.
If a spot starts to rust, however, a simple touch-up job will not be
enough. The affected surface must be sanded smooth and coated
with an anti-rust primer before the painted finish can be restored.

Windows
Clear vision to all sides.
Clean all windows regularly to remove road film and
carwash wax buildup.
- Remove snow from windows using a brush.
- Use a plastic ice scraper to remove ice from windows and
mirrors.
- Remove other residue on the windows with a spray-on
glass cleaner.
- Wipe the windows dry with a clean piece of cloth or
kitchen paper towel.

T he best way to remove snow from windows and mirrors is to use a
brush . Use a non -abrasive
pla stic ice scraper -better still, a spray
deicer -to remove
ice from w indows and mirrors .
The windows must not be cleaned with insect remover or wax since
these can inter fere with the function of the w inds hie ld w iper blades
(chatter).
Oil, grease o r sil icone residue can be removed with
glass cleaner or
s ilicone remover . However, wax residue requires the use of a
spec ially for mulated solvent . Please contact your Audi dealer for
advice on safe products for wax removal.
Windows should also be c leaned on the inside at regular interva ls .
Never dry windows with the same chamois that you use to dry
painted surfaces . Wax residue on the chamois can impair vision
t hrough the windows.
& WARNING
• The windshield mu st not be treated with water -repellent mate ­
rials. They c an incre ase gl are under poor v isibility conditions such
a s wetne ss, darkne ss, or when the sun i s low on the hori zon. In
addition , they can cause the wind shield wipers to chatter .

• Never use warm or hot water to remove snow and ice from
windows a nd mirrors . This cou ld cause the glass to crack.
• T o prevent damage to the wires of the rear defogger, do not p lace
any adhesive stickers on the inside of the rear window over the
wires .

in a forward direction -pushing the scraper away from you -never
back and forth. •
Weatherstrips

To be able sea l properly, the weatherstrips around the hood, doors,
rear lid, etc . must remain pliable. Spray the weatherstrips with sili­
co ne or coat them w ith ta lcum powder or glycer ine to retain the
f lexibility of the rubber and to protect them against freezing in the
winte r.

Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service.
You are well advised to replace a battery that is older than 5 years.
With certain types of airbag deployment, the battery is discon­ nected from the vehicle electrical system for safety reasons~

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power window regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected . These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again . To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehicle electrical system when absolutely necessary for repairs.
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of several days or
weeks, electrical components are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and maintains starting capability
over a longer period
~ page 269.
Take into consideration that when you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience functions , such as the master key remote function or
power seat adjustment, may not be available. The convenience
functions will be available again when you turn on the ignition and
start the engine.
Winter operation
During the winter months, battery capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
while starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when traveling only short distances. Let your authorized Audi dealer
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
~ page 314. A well charged battery will not only prevent starting
problems when the weather is cold , but will also last longer .
[ i] Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for several weeks at extremely low
temperatures, the vehicle battery should be removed and stored
where it will not freeze. This will prevent it from being damaged and
having to be replaced. •
Working on the battery
Be especially careful when working on or near the battery.

compartment,

Lift the floor by the plastic handle.
Hook the handle into the luggage compartment weather
strip.
