& WARNING
The sun blind must not be used to secure cargo. The luggage
compartment cover is not a luggage rack . Objects placed on the
cover pose a danger for all vehicle occupants during sudden
braking or in an accident. •

The windshield wiper lever controls both the windshield
wipers and the washer system.

Turning off th e wipers
- Move the lever back to position @.
The windshield wipers and washer only work when the ignition is
turned on . If you switch off the igni tion with the windshield wiper
lever still in the interva l wipe position and then come back a while
la ter and drive off, the rain sensor w ill reactiva te itse lf afte r the
veh ic le speed has exceeded 4 mph (6 km/hl.
The rain sensor* is only activated with the wiper lever set to posi ­
tion ®· When it starts to rain, the rain sensor wil l automatica lly acti ­
vate the intermittent wiping mode.
To reduce the sensitivity of the sensor, move switch @down. To
increase the sensitivity, move the switch up. The higher you adjust
the sensitivity, the faster the sensor will react when it senses mois ­
ture on the windsh ield. T
he rain sensor wiper interva ls depend on the sensitivity setting as
we ll as vehicle speed . During brief stops, wipe r mo tion will adjust in
relation to the amount of rain on the windshield.
Automatic wiper/washer: To eliminate water drop lets, the wind ­
shield wiper performs one afterwipe operat ion after several
seconds while driving. You can switch this function off by moving
t he lever to posit ion © within 10 seconds of the afterwipe opera ­
tion. The afterwipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition
is switch.
When the ignition is turned on, the washer jets are heated *.
& WARNING
• Wiper blade s are crucial for safe driving ! Only when they are in
good condition are they able to clear the window s properly to
provide uncompro mised v is ib ility. Worn or dam aged wiper bl ades
are a safety hazard =>

• The light /rain sen sor * is on ly de signed to a ssis t an d suppo rt
the driver . It remains en tirely the dr iver' s re spon sibility to monitor
out side weather cond ition s and to manuall y activate the wiper s as

• The wind shield mu st not be t re ate d with water -r e pellent mat e­
rial s. They can increa se glare under po or vi sibilit y conditions su ch
a s w etne ss, dar kne ss, or whe n the sun is lo w on t he hori zon . In
addition , they can cau se the windshield wipers to ch atter .

In freezing o r near freez ing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass
b efore you turn the wipers on . Loosen a wipe r blade which is fr ozen
in place before operating the wipers to prevent damage to the wiper
b lade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted window . Using the
wipers as a conven ient ice scraper wi ll dest roy the wiper blades. .._

• Before you take your vehicle to an automatic car wash , make sure
you have the windshield wiper system switched off !lever in position
Ol, otherwise the windshield wiper system could get damaged in the
car wash if it should suddenly come on.
[ i] Tips
• The rain sensor is part of the interval wiping system. Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor . To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades cause smearing, which
can affect the operation of the light/rain sensor*. Check the condi­
tion of your windshield wiper blades regularly .
• Applies to vehicles with light/rain sensor : When the wipers are
switched on manually and in rain conditions, the automatic head ­
lights* turn on~

control" or off during the day when the wipers are no longer oper ­
ating . The automatic headlights* function is available in this case
only when the light switch is in the "AUTO" position~

• Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment

Rear window wiper

The wiper lever is also used to operate the rear window
wiper and the automatic wiper/washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/washer
functions are activated as follows:
Intermittent wiping
Push the wiper lever forward towards the dashboard and
to the
first position ©=> fig. 65. The rear window wiper
will wipe the window approx. every four seconds.
Automatic wiper/washer function
Push the wiper lever forward to the second stop, position
0, and hold it there for as long as you want the rear
wiper/washer to operate.
Re lease the lever again. The wiper will keep running for
approx . four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
-Pull the lever all the way back to the original position.

& WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only in good condition
are they able to clear the windows properly to provide unre­
stricted visibility. Worn or frayed wiper blades are a safety hazard!
=> page 67, "Replacing front wiper blades"

For better rearward vision when parking, the rear window wiper is
automatically activated one time when the windshield wipers are
switched on and reverse gear is engaged. •

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights.
-Operate the windshield wiper/washer system=> page 63,

The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front headlights with water.
You should inspect the headlights regularly (for example when refu­
eling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses. To
ensure the system works properly in winter, keep the washer jets
free of snow and remove any ice using a de -icing spray. •
Service position
Replacing the windshield wiper blades is only possible
when you move the wiper arms into the service position. In
order to use the windshield wipers, the hood must be
completely closed. When there is a risk of frost, make sure
that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield.
Switch the ignition on.
Act ivate the service position by way of the driver infor­
mation system =>
page 23.
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle when the windshield wiper arms are in the
service position and pulled away from the windshield. When you
drive faster than 4 mph (6 km/h), the wiper arms automatically
return back to the park position and could cause paint damage to
the engine hood!
[ i] Tips
• You can also turn on the service position, for example, if you
want to protect the windshield from icing by using a cover.
• Th e service position moves to
off automatically when you
operate the windshield wiper lever, or speed exceeds 4 mph
(6 km/h). •

- Move the wipers to the service position ~ page 66.
- Fold the windshield wiper arm away from the glass.
- On the upper end of the wiper arm at the corrugation, squeeze the plastic retainer together on both sides in the
direction of the arrow~ fig. 66.
- Rotate the wiper blade in the direction of the arrow@

- Lift the wiper blade off in the direction of the arrow @.
Attaching the wiper blade
- Place the rounded end of the wiper onto the end of the
wiper arm in the opposite direction to the arrow @
~ fig. 67.
- Swing the wiper in the opposite direction to the arrow@
onto the wiper arm .
- Squeeze the corrugation on the wiper until you hear it
click in the wiper arm.
- Fold the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Switch the ignition on and move the wiper lever down
briefly. The wiper will move back to the park position.
The front wiper blades measure left side 23.20 in. (590 mm) and
right side 18.50 in. (470 mm) in length,
Clean your wiper blades regularly with a windshield washer solution
to prevent streaking. If the blades are very dirty, for example with
insects, carefully clean the blades with a sponge or a soft brush.
If the wiper blades begin to streak the windshield, this cou ld be
caused by residue left on the windshield by automatic car washes.
Fill the windshield washer container with a special solution avail­
able at your authorized Audi dealer to remove the residue.
Be sure to inspect the condition of your wiper blades regularly. For
safety reasons, rep lace your wiper blades once or twice a year if
necessary. See your authorized Audi dealer for replacement blades.

• Clean your wiper blades regularly with a windshield washer
solution to prevent streaking.

-Always loosen blades which are frozen to the windshield

- Do n ot use gasoline, kerosene , paint thinner, or other solvents
on or near the wiper blades.
- Do not attempt to move the wipers by hand.

- Press the wiper blade into t he re tainer. Hold t he wiper
arm firmly by t he upper end as you do th is .
- Fold the wiper arm bac k on to the glass.

regularly with w indow cleaner . For heavy soiling, for example,
in se cts, the wiper blade s can a lso be cleaned w ith a sponge or a
cloth.

the ESP check light comes on, see~ page 13. The message ASR off
appears in the display as well.
The ASR should normally be activated all the time . Only in certain
exceptional situations when some slip is desirable does it make
sense to deactivate the ASR. Examples:
• when driving with tire chains
• when driving in deep snow or on loose ground and
• when rocking the vehicle loose after it has become stuck.
When the abnormal situation is over, you should activate the ASR
again.
& WARNING
The increased safety afforded by ASR does not mean that you can
take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.
[ i] Tips
To ensure that the ASR works properly, all four wheels must be fitted
with identical tires. Any differences in rolling radius of the tires can
cause the system to reduce engine power when this is not desired.

General information
What affects braking efficiency?
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automobiles are still subject to wear,
depending largely on operating conditions and driving habits~& .
On vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic
or are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your autho-

rized Audi dealer more often than specified in the Warranty & Main­
tenance booklet.
Failure to have your brake pads inspected can
result in reduced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you should use the braking effect of the engine.
This way, you prevent unnecessary wear on the brake system. If you
must use your brakes, do not hold the brakes down continuously.
Pump the brakes at intervals.
Moisture or road salt
If you are driving faster than 50 mph (80 km/h) and the windshield
wipers are on, the brake pads will briefly touch the brake discs in
regular intervals so as to improve reaction time when braking on
wet surfaces. You, the driver, will not notice anything.
Under certain conditions, for example, when driving through water
or very heavy rain, or even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced due to moisture (or in freezing conditions ice)
on the brake pads. A few cautious brake applications should dry off
the brake pads or remove any ice coatings.
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced when the vehicle is
driven on a salt-covered road and the brakes are not used . Likewise,
you clean off accumulated salt coating from brake discs and pads
with a few cautious applications of the brake~&.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up on the brake pads and
corrosion to form on the discs if the car is not driven regularly or
only for short trips with little use of the brakes .
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if corrosion has formed on
the discs, it is advisable to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately high speed~& .
Faults in the brake system
If you should notice a sudden increase in brake pedal travel, then
one of the two brake circuits may have failed~&. ..,

The best way to remove snow from windows and mirrors is to use a
brush . Use a non -abrasive
pla stic ice scraper -better still, a spray
deicer -to remove
ice from w indows and mirrors .
The windows must not be cleaned with insect remover or wax since
these can inter fere with the function of the w inds hie ld w iper blades
(chatter).
Oil, grease o r sil icone residue can be removed with
glass cleaner or
s ilicone remover . However, wax residue requires the use of a
spec ially fo rmulated so lvent . Please contac t your authorized Audi
dea ler for advice on safe products for wax removal.
Windows should also be c leaned on the inside at regular interva ls .
Never dry windows with the same chamois that you use to dry
painted surfaces . Wax residue on the chamois can impair vision
t hrough the windows .
& WARNING
• The windshield mu st not be treated with water -repellent mate ­
rials. T hey c an incre ase gl are under poor v isibility conditions such
a s wetne ss, darkne ss, or when the sun i s low on the hori zon. In
addition , they can cause the wind shield wipers to chatter .
• Alway s read and heed all WARNINGS and other information
~ page 206.

• Never use warm or hot water to remove snow and ice from
windows a nd mirrors . This cou ld cause the glass to crack.
• T o prevent damage to the wires of the rear defogger, do not p lace
any adhesive stickers on the inside of the rear window over the
wires .
• T o he lp prevent dirt from scratching the window, always scrape
in a forward direction -pushing the scraper away from you -never
back and forth. •
Weatherstrips

App ly a suitable rubbe r con ditioner to the weatherstr ips
f ro m time to time.
To be able sea l properly, the weatherstrips around the hood, doors,
rear lid, etc . must remain pliabl e. Spray the weatherstrips with sili­
co ne or coat them w ith ta lcum powder or glycer ine to retain the
f lexibility of the rubber and to protect them against freezing in the
winte r.

Steel wheels

If necessary, use a commercial whee l cleaner to remove accumu ­
lated brake dust.
The wheel rims are eas ier to keep clean if they are reg ula rly coa ted
