When you park your vehicle on hills , do the
following

This is how you can reduce the risk of injury when leaving your
vehicle.
• Never park the vehicle where it can come in contact with dry
grass, spilled fuel or any other flammable materials.
• When parking on hills , always turn the wheels so that the front
wheels will first roll into the curb, if the vehicle should start to roll .
• Never allow anyone -especially small children -to remain in the
vehicle when it is locked. Locked doors make it more difficult for
rescuers to access the passenger compartment in the event of an
emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. Children
could release the parking brake or move the gearsh ift lever out of
gear . The vehicle could start to roll away and cause an acc ident.
• No matter what the season is, the temperature in a parked
vehicle can reach dangerous levels .

Starting on hills

& WARNING
• If you did not begin moving immediately after relea sing the
brake pedal , under certain c ircumstances , the vehicle would begin
to roll backward . Depress the brake pedal immediately or engage
the parking brake .
• Should the engine stall , depress the brake pedal immediately
or engage the parking brake . .,_

• In order to prevent the vehicle from rolling back unintentionally
when starting in stop -and -go traffic , keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few se conds before driving off .
• When you leave the vehicle -eve n if only briefly -, switch off the
ignition and make sure to remove the ignition key. Also engage the
parking brake to prevent your vehicle from rolling unintentionally .
This particularly applies if ch ildren are left in the vehicle -danger
of accident! •

T he display => fig. 158 wi ll show the set speed. The display may vary
d epend ing on the type o f dis play i n yo ur vehicle. The indi cator lig ht
CRUISE (US model)/ 0" (Canadian model) will a lso light up in the
instr ument clus te r.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to traffic even when the cruise control is
switched on . You are always responsible for your speed and the
distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For safety reasons, the cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop -and -go traffic, on twisting roads and when road condi ­
tions are poor (such as ice , fog , gravel , heavy rain and hydro­
planing ) -risk of accident.
• Turn off the cruise control temporar ily when entering turn
lanes, highway exit lanes or in constru ction zones.
• Please note that inadvertently "rest ing " your foot on the accel­
erator pedal cau ses the cruise control not to brake . This is because
the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration . ..

• Never use the cruise control when driving off-road or on
unpaved roads. The Cruise control is intended for use only when
the vehicle is being operated on paved roads , and is not suitable
for use off -road or on unpaved roads .
[ i J Tips
The cruise control cannot maintain a constant speed when driving
downhill. The vehicle will accelerate under its own weight. Down ­
shift to a lower gear or use the brakes to slow down. •
Changing speed
-Press lever in the 0 or O direction ~ page 149, fig. 157
to increase or decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your
speed, e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you release the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will turn off temporarily.
The symbol will go out but the saved speed will be retained. •
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehicle is not
moving.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Pull lever into position

- Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Release the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before driving on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
G). •

Switching off completely

- Switch the ignition off.
The system retains the saved speed if you deactivate the cruise
control temporarily . To resume the saved speed, release the brake
pedal and pull the lever to position

Switching the ignition off erases the saved speed.

How is the speed stored?

Storing speed
With the system switched on the speed is stored as follows :
- Drive at the speed you want.
Press the ( SET] button
::::> fig. 162 to store the desired
speed.
After the I SET I button is released, the current speed is stored and
maintained . If you are driving at a speed below 20 mph (30 km/h) ,
the minimum speed setting of 20 mph (30 km/h) will be set.
The saved speed is now shown in the LED display in the speedom­ eter by one or two illuminated red light diodes~
page 161. At the
same time , the saved speed is also shown for a short time in the
Information line~
page 163.

For safety reasons, the stored speed is erased when the ignition or
the ACC is turned off. •

ator or brake pedal.

- Press the lever upwards
Q and hold it. As long as you
hold the control switch down, the light diode display in
the speedometer LED display in the speedometer moves
forward and the speed is increased.
Reducing speed
- Press the lever briefly downwards Q. USA models: the
speed decreases by 2.5 mph. Canada models: speed will
decrease by one mark on the speedometer scale. _,,.

Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop and the engine is
running at idle speed=>

Before you move the selector lever to R, press both the button in the
handle of the selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illuminate when the
selector lever is moved into R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position. Shift to this position
for standing with the brakes applied =>
page 186 .
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the footbrake before and while moving the
lever out of
N.
D -Normal position for driving forward
Position Dis for normal city and highway driving. It ranges from zero
to top speed and all gears shift automatically, depending on engine
load, driving speed and automatically selected shift programs.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to
D out of N.
In certain circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manually select gear ratios to
match specific driving conditions=>
page 788.
S -Sport position
Select this position for sportier performance. In this position, the
transmission will not upshift as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher engine speeds to achieve live­
lier acceleration.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to
S out of N.

Coasting downhill with the transmission in N and the engine not
running will result in damage to the automatic transmission and
possibly the catalytic converter. •
Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acciden­
tally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows:
- Turn the ignition on.
Step on the brake pedal.
At the same time press and hold
the interlock button on the side of the gear selector knob
=> fig. 199 with your thumb until you have moved the
selector lever to the desired position.

Autom ati c selec to r l eve r lock
The se lector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the igni ­
tion is turned on. To move the lever from these positions the driver
must depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, the
follow ing warning appears in the instrument cluster disp lay when
the selector is in
P and N:
When stationary app ly foot brake while s electing gear
A time delay e lement prevents the selector lever from locking when
it is moved through the
N position (going from R to Dl. The locking
e lement will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N (Neutral)
for more than approximately 1 second, without the brake peda l
being pressed.
At speeds above about 3 mph (5 km/h) the Automatic Shift Lock is
automatically deactivated in the
N posi tion .
Interl ock button
The lock button on the selector lever prevents the lever from being
accidentally shifted into certain positions. Pressing this button
deactivates the selector leve r lock. Dependi ng on the direction of
the shift, the selector lever locks at different positions. The positions
are highligh ted in the illus trati on =>
page 186, fig . 199.
Igniti on k ey saf ety in te rlo ck
The key canno t be removed from the ignition un less the selector
lever is in the
P park position. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever wil l be l ocked in the
P posi tion .•
Kick -down
T he kick-down feature allows the vehicle to genera te
maximum accelera tion.
When you press the acce lerator pedal beyond the resistance point
that is reached at ful l throttle, the transmission wi ll select a lower
gear ratio based on vehic le speed and engine RPM . The engine RPM
wil l be control led to produce maximum vehic le acceleration as long

as you continue to press the acce lerator pedal beyond this resis ­
t ance poin t.
& WARNING
Be careful when u sing the ki ck -down feature on slippery road s.
Rapid acceleration ma y cause the vehicle to skid . •
Dynamic shift program (DSP)
T he aut omatic tr ans mission is electro nically c ontrolle d.
The transmission is se lf adapting and will automaticall y select the
b est shi ft program su ited to the driving conditio ns and driving style.
The transmission will select one of the
e conomy programs when
you drive at a s teady speed or a g radually changing speed without
heavy acceleration. This achieves optimum fuel efficiency, with ear ly
upshifting and delayed downshifting .
The trans mission will au tomatically select the
sporty shift progra ms
when you drive at higher speeds, or with heavy acce leration and
frequent ly cha nging speeds . Upshifts ar e delayed t o make f ull use
of engine power . Downshifting takes place at higher engine speeds
than in t he ec onomy p rograms .
The selection of the most su itable shift program is a continuous,
automatic process . The driver can a lso make the transmission
sw itch to a sporty progra m by
quickly pressing down the gas peda l.
This causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to
achiev e rapid acc elerati on, e.g . fo r q uickly pass ing another vehicle .
You do not need to press the gas pedal into the kick-down range.
After the transm ission has upshifted, the original progra m is
selected according to your driving sty le.
An additiona l shift program allows the automatic transmission to
select the proper gear fo r uph ill and downhi ll gradients.
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unneces­ sari ly on hi lls. The transmissio n will shift down t o a lowe r gear when _,.

T he emergency release is located under the insert for the
ashtray.
- Slide open the cover for the ashtray.
- Remove the ashtray insert ~
page 116.
-Now you can see a small cover in the ashtray holder

- Release and remove this cover from the ashtray holder .
- You now have access to a rocker switch. Using a screw-
driver or similar objec t, press the rocker switch down and
hold it down~ fig. 204.
- Now press the interlock and move the selector lever to
the
N position .
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the igni­
tion key is in the lock and the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has
to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g. battery is
discharged), the selector lever must be moved to the
N position
using the emergency lock ing device .

On vehicles without an ashtray, the rocker switch is located in the
same position under the rubber cover . The rubber cover must be
carefully lifted with a screwdriver or similar object in order to access
the rocker switch. •

Fi ve differen t driving modes can be set by the driver.
The automatic contro l processes are speed -and time -dependent.
For example, it is not possible to raise the suspension to a high level
above certain speeds.
When a speed of about 75 mph (120 km/hl is exceeded for more than 30 seconds, the vehicle is automatically lowered to
low level when
in com fort and automatic mode . Ground clearance is about 0 .6 inch
(15 mm) less, compared to the
normal level.
When a speed of about 100 mph (160 km/h) is exceeded for more
than 20 seconds, the vehicle is automatically lowered to
highway
/eve/when in automatic and dynamic mode. Ground clearance is
about 1.4 inches (35 mm) less, compared to the
normal level. Road
holding is optimized as a resu lt of the lower center of gravity, and
fue l consumpt ion is reduced as a result of reduced wind resistance .

seconds, the vehic le is automatica lly raised to
low level. The vehicle
is automatically raised again to
normal level if the speed fa lls be low
about 44 mph (70 km/h) for a period of 2 minutes. The vehicle is
ra ised immediate ly when speed fa lls below about 22 mph (35 km/h).

Select the dynamic mode if you prefer a sporty suspension sett ing.
I n this mode, the vehic le is lowered to
/ow level while it is sti ll
stationary and sporty damping characteristics are selected . The
warning light~ in the instrument cluster will come on for a few
seconds jus t to remi nd you of the reduced ground clearance .
I f you switch off the engine while the vehicle is in the dynamic mode
and then switch on the ignition once again, the~ warning light
wi ll also come on again for a few seconds as a reminder.
• Automatic lowering : When a speed of about 100 mph (160 km/h)
is exceeded for more than 20 seconds, the ve hicle is auto matica lly
lowered by 0.8 inch (20 mm) to
highway level.
• Automatic rai sing: The vehic le is automatically raised to low level
again, if the speed falls below about 80 mph (130 km/h) for a period
o f 20 secon ds. The ve hicle is ra ised i mmediately whe n speed falls
below about 22 mph (35 km/h). .,_
