Care of interior
MMI display
- C lean the M MI display with a soft c lean cloth and an LCD
cleaner.
The MM I display can be cleaned with a professional ly available "LCD
cleaner". The clot h should be s lightly dampened with the c leaning
fluid to clean the display.

T o avoid scratching the MMI display, you should never c lean it dry. •
MMI terminal
- First clean the MMI terminal with a brush to remove dust
from the housing . T
hen w ipe the MM I terminal wit h a clean, so ft, s light ly
dam p cloth.
The M MI termina l shou ld be c leaned w ith a brush first so that no
dirt is trapped between the buttons and the housing. We recom
mend giving the MMI terminal a fina l w ipe with a c loth moistened
with water and dish washing detergent.

To prevent damage, make sure that no fluid ever gets into the MMI
terminal. •
Aluminum trim
Use only neutral -pH produc ts to remove spots and deposits from
aluminum surfaces. Chrome care products and alkaline cleaners
wi ll attack aluminum surfaces and can damage them over time.

Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fabrics and fabric coverings (e.g . seats, door trim panels, etc.)
shou ld be c leaned at regular inte rvals with a vacuum cleaner . This
removes surface dirt particles which could become embedded in
the fabric th rough use. Steam cleaners shou ld not be used, because
the steam tends to push the dirt deeper into the fabric and lock it
there .

Normal cleaning

Mor e stubborn dirt
- More stubborn dirt can be removed using a cloth satu
rated with a mild soap solution (2 tablespoons m ild
liquid soap) .
- Neve r allow the soap solution to saturate the leathe r, and
make certain that no water soaks into the seams.
Wipe off the soap solution with a soft, dry clot h.
Cleaning spots
-Remove fresh water-based spots (su ch as coffee, tea,
juices, b lo od) with an a bsorbent c loth or paper towel.
- Remove fresh grease or oil-based spots (such as butter,
mayonnaise, choco late) with an absorbent c loth o r paper
towel, or use the cleaner from the leather care k it if t he
spot has not yet penetrated into the su rface of the
l eather.
- Use an oil/grease dissolving spray, if oil/grease spots
have dried on .
- Remove specific kinds of spots (ballpoint pen , fe lt
marker, fingernai l po lish, water -based paint, shoe polish ,
etc.) with a spot remover specifically formulated for lea ther .
Leather car e
-Every half year use a n approved leather care product
(availa ble from your author ized Audi deale r) to care for
t h e lea ther.
- Apply the produc t very spar ingly.
- Wipe i t off wit h a damp cloth.

Cleaning Alcantara ® (synthetic suede)
Removing dust and dirt
- Moisten a cloth, squeeze out excess water and wipe down
the seat surfaces.
Removing stains
- Moisten a cloth with lukewarm water or with diluted
ethyl (rubbing) alcohol.
Dab at the stain. Start at the outside and work inwards.
- Once the stain is no longer visible, use a soft dry cloth or
tissue to soak up the moisture.
Do not use leather cleaning products on Alcantara.
You may use a suitable shampoo for removing dust and dirt. Dust and grit in the pores and seams can scratch and damage th e
surface. If the car is left standing in the sun for long periods, the
Alcantara should be protected against direct sunlight to prevent it
from fading. Slight color variations will develop in normal use and
are not an indication of material deterioration.

Safety belts
Only well-maintained safety belts work reliably when
needed.
Keep belts clean .
- For cleaning, use a mild soap and water solution. Let
belts dry thoroughly and away from direct sunl ight.
- Do not allow inertia reel safety belts to retract before
they are completely dry.
- Check the condition of your safety belts
regularly.
Heavily soiled safety belts may not retract properly.
& WARNING
Damaged safety belts can break in a crash.
• Anything that might damage your safety belts could mean that
you and your passengers would not be adequately protected in an
accident.
• Safety belt performance depends on correct installation. Never
remove belts from the vehicle to clean them.
• Do not use chemical cleaning agents, bleach or dyes. They have
corrosive properties which weaken the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety belts, inspect them for damage.

you discover damage, see your authorized Audi dealer.

Releasing the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehicle.
-Open the driver's door.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that the wind
shield wipers are flat against the windshield. Otherwise,
they could damage the paint on the hood.
Lift the hood slightly =>&, .
- Pull up on the release under the hood => fig. 282. This
releases the catch.
- Open the hood all the way.
The hood is kept in the open position by two gas struts.
& WARNING
Hot engine coolant can burn you.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood. •

Changin g the engine oil
The engine oil and oil filter must be changed according to the
mi leage (ki lometers) and time intervals specified in your vehicle's
Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. Do not exceed these interva ls -
harmful deposits from old engine oil can reduce engine perfor
mance and can lead to expensive engine repairs.
Changing the oi l at the recommended intervals is so very important
because the lubricating prope rties of oi l decrease gradual ly during
normal vehicle use . If you are not sure when you have your oil
changed, ask your author ized Audi Serv ice Advisor.
Under some circumstances the engine oil should even be changed
more frequently. Change oil more often if you dr ive mostly short
distances, operate the vehicle in dusty areas or mostly under stop
and -go t raffic conditions, or when you use your vehicle where
temperatures stay be low freezing point for long per iods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil look dark after the
engine has been running for a short time . This is normal and is not
a reason to change the oil more often than recommended.
Damag e or malfunctions due to lack o f mainten anc e
It is essentia l that you change your oi l at the recommended interva ls
using on ly engine oil that complies with Audi oil standard
VW 502 00. Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not cover damage or ma lfunctions due to failure to follow recommended
main tenance and use requirements as set forth in the Aud i Owner's
Manual and Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. Your dealer wi ll have
t o deny warranty cove rage unless you present to the dealer p ro o f in
the form of Service or Repair Orders that all schedu led maintenance
was pe rformed in a timely manner. •
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an adeq uate
amount of oil t o lubric ate and c ool all of its m oving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and coo ling of interna l
engine components, al l interna l combustio n eng ines consume a
certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine
and may change significant ly over the life of the engine . Typ ically,
engines with a specified break-in period (see=>
page 2971 consume
more oil du ring the break-in period than they consume after oil
consumption has stabi lized .
Unde r normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on
the quality and v iscosity of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute)
at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road
cond itions. Fur ther factors are the amount of oil di lu tion from wate r
condensation or fue l residue and the oxidation leve l of the oi l. As
any engine is subject to wear as mileage bu ilds up, t he oil consump
tion may increase over time until replacement of worn components
may become necessa ry .
With all these variables coming into play, no standard rate o f oi l
consumption can be established or specified . There is no alternative
t o regula r and frequent checking of the oil level, see
Note .
If the yel low engine oil level warning symbo l in the instrument
clus ter lights up, yo u should check the oil level as soon as
possible
with the oil dipstick=> page 335. Top off the oil at your
ea rliest convenience =>

- Read the engine coolant level in the open coolant expan
sion tank :::::>
page 338, fig. 287. With a cold engine, the
coolant level should be between the "min" and "max"
markings. When the engine is warm, the level may be
slightly above the "max" marking.
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be seen in the
engine compartment illustration~
page 332.
To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped with an electric
coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning light in the Auto
Check System~
page 33will blink until you add coolant and the
level has been restored to normal. Even though there is an electric
coolant level sensor, we still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling system . In the event
of coolant loss, the cooling system should be inspected immedi
ately by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not enough merely to add
coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if the boiling point of the
coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating.
& WARNING
The cooling system is under pressure and can get very hot. Reduce
the risk of scalding from hot coolant by following these steps.
• Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
• Protect your face, hands and arms from escaping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large, thick rag.

• Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a counter-clockwise
direction while applying light, downward pressure on the top of
the cap .
• To avoid being burned, do not spill antifreeze or coolant on the
exhaust system or hot engine parts. Under certain conditions, the
ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire.
0 Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant to your vehicle's engine
coolant. Adding radiator repair fluid may adversely affect the func
tion and performance of your cooling system and could result in
damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty. •
Adding coolant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS:::::> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 331.
- Turn off the engine.
Let the engine cool down.
Place a thick rag over the coolant expansion tank
=:> page 338, fig. 287 and carefully twist the cap counter
clockwise :::::>& .
Add coolant.
- Twist the cap on again
tightly.
Replacement engine coolant must conform to exact specifications
~ page 337, "Coolant". Even in an emergency, if coolant additive .,,

add co ld antifreeze and cold water only when the engine is cold .

Do not fi ll coo lant above the "MAX" mark. Excess coolant wil l be
forced out through the pressure relief valve in the cap when the
engine beco mes hot.
& WARNING
• The cooling sy stem is under pressure and can get very hot .
Reduce the risk of s calding from hot coolant by following these
steps .
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from escaping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large, thick rag .
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a counter -clockwise
dire ction while applying light , downward pressure on the top
of the cap .
- To avoid being burned , do not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the exhaust system or hot engine parts . Under certain condi
tions , the ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire.
• Antifreeze is po isonous . Always store antifreeze in its original
container and well out of the reach of children.
• If you drain the coolant , it must be caught and safely stored in
a proper container clearly marked "poison ".

Radiator fan
The radiato r fan switches on au toma tic ally by i tself.
The radiator fa n is dr iven by the eng ine via th e V -belt. The visco us
clutch regulates the speed of the fan according to the temperature
o f t he coo la nt.
An auxiliary electric radiator fan * sw itches on and off depending on
coo la nt t empe rat ure a nd othe r vehic le operating c ondi tio ns.
A ft er you sw itch the e ngine o ff, the au xiliary fa n ca n conti nue
running for up to 10 m inutes- even with the ignition off. It can even
switch o n again lat er by itsel f::::> & , if
• the temperature of the eng ine coo lant rises due to the heat
bu ild -up from the eng ine in the eng ine compartment, or
• the engine compartment heats up because the vehic le is parked
in i ntense sun ligh t.
& WARNING
• To reduce the ri sk of personal injury never touch the radiator
fan .

- Read the brake fluid l eve l from the brake fluid reservoir
=> fig. 288. The brake flu id level mus t be between the
"MIN" and "MAX" markings.

The fluid level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto
ma tic adjustment of the brake pads. This is not cause for alarm .
If the brake fluid leve l falls
considerably below the "MIN" mark , the
brake warning/indicator light (U.S. models:

page 23 and=> page 32 . Do not continue to
operate the vehicle. The complete brake system should be thor
oughly checked
by an author ized Audi dealer or qua lif ied workshop
and the cause corrected . If th e brake fluid level is too low, the brake

immedi ately .

The brake fluid reservoir is located underneath the cover .•
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experience d techni
cian.
Brak e fluid absorbs mois ture from the air. If the wate r conten t in the
brake fluid is too high, corrosion in the brake sys tem may res ult
after a period of time . The boiling point of the brake fluid will also
decrease conside rably and decrease braking performance .
Therefore , the brake fluid mus t be changed
every two year s. Always
use new brake fluid which conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle S tan
da rd "FMVSS 116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be difficul t to reach, therefore , we
recommend that y ou have the brake fluid changed by your autho
rized
Audi deal er. Your dealer has the correct tools, the right brake
fluid and the know -how to do this for you .
