Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with your original Audi
key.
- Set the parking brake.
- Move the selector lever to the neutral position (automatic
transmission: selector lever in P or N)

- On vehicles with manual transmission, fully depress the
clutch pedal.
- Turn the ignition key to position
0 => page 119, fig. 136
- do not depress the gas pedal when starting the engine!
- Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has been started. This is
due to the hydraulic valves building up the oil pressure. This normal
and no need for concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
What to do if the engine does not start

& WARNING
Never start or let the engine run in a confined or enclosed area .
Exhaust fumes from the engine contain carbon monoxide, a color­
less and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide can be fatal if inhaled.
• Never leave the engine idling unattended. An unattended
vehicle with a running engine poses a danger of personal injury or
theft.

• Avoid high engine speeds, fast acceleration or heavy engine
loads while the engine is still cold. This could damage the engine.
• The engine cannot be started by pushing or towing the vehicle.
~ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emis­
sions, do not let your vehicle stand and warm up. Be ready to drive
off immediately after starting your vehicle. Maintain moderate
speed until the engine is completely warm. Remember, the engine
performs best at operating temperature.•
Stopping the engine
- Turn the ignition key to position (D => page 119, fig. 136.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off, you have to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries.
• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minutes even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat build-up
in the engine
compartment. _,.

Do not stop the engine immediately after hard or extended driving.
Keep the engine running for approximately two minutes to prevent
excessive heat build-up. •
Parking brake
Parking brake
When the parking brake is set, it prevents the vehicle from
rolling away unintentionally.

- Pull the parking brake lever all the way up.
Releasing the parking brake
- Pull the parking brake lever up slightly
and press the

Contro ls and eq uip­
ment
If you should drive off with the parking brake still set, a warning tone
will sound and the following will appear in the instrument cluster to
remind you to release the parking brake:
Parking brake set
The parking brake warning comes on only after you have driven for longer than 3 seconds and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).
The parking brake warning light Brake (Canada:
{(j))) illuminates
when the parking brake is set and you switch on the ignition .
& WARNING
Always release the parking brake completely. A partially engaged
brake will overheat the rear brakes, reduce their effectiveness and
cause excessive wear. This could lead to brake failure and an acci­
dent.

Only after the vehicle has come to complete stop, should you firmly
set the parking brake and either move the gearshift lever into 1st.
gear (manual transmission) or move the selector lever into P (Auto ­
matic transmission). •
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehicle, do the following:
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Set the parking brake firmly.
- Move the selector lever into the

Storing a sp eed
You must set and then store a vehicle speed using the
cruise control.

- Accelerate until you reach the driving speed you want to
store.

After you release button@, the current vehicle speed is stored and
maintained. •
Changing a stored speed
You can change a stored speed.
Accelerate (faster)
-Lift lever @ toward 0 => fig. 138.
Release the lever to store the new speed.
Decelerate (slower)
-Lower lever@ toward O => fig. 138.
- Release the lever to store the new speed.
You can also increase the vehicle speed by depressing the acceler­
ator pedal. The vehicle speed will increase as long as you keep the
accelerator pedal depressed. When you let up on the accelerator
pedal, the vehicle speed will automatically return the to previously
stored vehicle speed in the cruise control.
If the actual vehicle speed exceeds the stored vehicle speed in the
cruise control for longer than five minutes and by more than 6 mph
(10 km/h), the cruise control will automatically erase the stored
vehicle speed and you will have to reset the cruise control again.
Tapping the lever lightly @
By lightly tapping the lever@toward G) ~ fig. 138, you can
increase vehicle speed by approximately 1 mph (2 km/h).

Switching the system off t emporarily
Either of the following actions will temporarily deactivate
the cruise control:
- pressing the brake pedal, or
- pressing the clutch pedal (on manual transmission
models), or
moving the lever@ up in direction
@ (not engaging)

When you temporarily deactivate the cruise control for a brief
period, the previously stored vehicle speed remains in the memory. -.,

tiptronic® (6-speed automatic
transmission)

General information
Your vehic le is equipped with an electronically controlled automatic
transmission. Upshifting and downshifting takes place
automati­
cally.
The transmiss ion is also equipped with tiptronic®. It allows the
driver to shi ft gears
manually if desired~ page 130 . •

Driving the automatic transmission

Maneuvering
- Shift only between D and R when the vehicle is at a full
stop and the engine is runn ing at idle speed.
Stopping
- Press a nd h old the brake pedal until the vehicle has come
to a complete stop.
- Keep the brake pedal depressed so that the vehic le
cannot ro ll forwa rd or backward while it is idling =>& .
- Once stopped,
do not dep ress the acce lerator pedal to
rev up the engine=>& .
Par king
- Press a nd h old the brake pedal un til the vehicle has com e
to a complete stop.
- Se t the parking brake firmly=>

R -Reverse
The transmission will automatically select the lowest gear ratio
when you shift into reverse.
Select
R only when the vehicle is at a full stop and the engine is
running at idle speed~

Before you move the selector lever to R, press both the button in the
handle of the selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illuminate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position. Shift to this position
for standing with the brakes applied~
page 128.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the footbrake before and while moving the
lever out of
N.
D -Normal position for driving forward
Position Dis for normal city and highway driving. It ranges from zero
to top speed and all six gears shift automatica lly, depending on
engine load, driving speed and automatically selected shift
programs. The gear engaged is shown in the right of the display
~ page 127, fig. 140.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and whi le moving the
lever to
D out of N .
In certain circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manua lly se lect gear ratios to
match specific driving conditions~
page 130.
S -Sport position
Select this position for sportier performance. In this position, the
t ransmission will not upshift as soon, allowing the vehic le to use the increased power available at higher engine speeds
to achieve live­
lier accelera tion .
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h),
you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to
S out of N.

(D Note
Coasting downhil l with the transmission in N and the engine not
running w ill result in damage to the automatic transmission and
possibly the catalytic converter. •

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acciden­
tally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

The selection of the most suitable shift program is a continuous,
automatic process . The driver can a lso make the transmission
switch to a sporty program by
qu ickly pressing down the gas pedal.
This causes the transmission to shift down to a lower gear to achieve rapid acceleration, e .g. for quickly passing another vehicle.
You do not need to press the gas pedal into the kick -down range.
After the transmission has upshi fted , the original program is
selected according to your driving style.
An additiona l shift program allows the automatic transmission to
select the proper gear for uphill and downhill gradients.
This keeps the transmission from shifting up and down unneces ­
sari ly on hills . The transmission will shift down to a lower gear when
the driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This
makes use of the braking effect of the engine wi thout the need to
shift down manua lly .•

Manual shift program
Using the manual shift program you can manually select
gears.

With the se lector lever in D, push the lever to t he right .
The disp lay w ill s how
6 5 4 3 2 1 as soon as the selector
lever is moved. The gear you selec t will also be high­
lighted => fig. 1 43.
To upshift
Push the selector lever forward to t he p lus position 0
=> fig. 142 .
To downshift
-Push th e lever to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transm ission will automatica lly shift into the
next higher gear before the engine reaches the maximum RPM .
I f you apply a light throttle when accelerating, tiptronic® will auto ­
matically shift from 1st to 2nd gear to save fuel. If you apply a heavy
throttle, the transmission will stay in 1st gear until near maximum
RPM is reached, or until the driver sh ifts into 2nd gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator peda l when driving down a
steep inc lin e, tiptronic® will downshift from the selec ted gear into
the next lower gear until it reaches 1st gear, based on road speed
and engine RPM. Automatic downshif ting is interrup ted as soon as
you apply the thrott le again . .,_

Transmi ssio n -_______________ ___,

• When you shi ft into the next lower gear, the transmission wi ll
downshi ft only when there is no poss ibi lity of over -rew ing the
engine.
• When the kick -down com es on, the transmission will shift down
to a lower gear, depending on vehicle and engine speeds .
• The tiptronic® is inoperative when the transmission is in the fail ­
sa fe mode .•

Steering wheel with tiptronic ®
The shift buttons on the steering wheel allow the driver to
shift gears manually.

The shift buttons are activated when the selector lever is in D, Sor
in the manual shift program (tiptronic).
Of course, you can continue to use the manual shift program with
the selector lever on the center console .•

Fail -safe mode
If tiptronic® suffers a malfunction, the fail-safe mode
maintains minimum drive ability .
In the event of particular system malfunct ions, the automatic trans­
m ission switches to th e fail -saf e mode. This is signalled by all the
seg ments in the display illuminating or going out .
You can continue to move the selec tor lever to all positions . The
manual shift program (tiptronic) is switched off in the fail -safe
mode .
In selector lever posi tions D and Sand in the manual shift program,
the transmission remains in 3rd gear if 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear was engaged previous ly. The transmission remains in 5th g ear, if 4th , 5th
or 6 th gear was engaged previous ly .
The next time you drive off o r start the engine , 3rd gear is engaged .
You can continu e to use reverse gear . But the electron ic lockout for
reverse gear is turned off.
